Cheddar Bridge Touring Park: August Balloon Fiesta

General

  • Award-winning, peaceful and adults-only park
  • Overlooking the Mendip Hills; River Yeo flowing through the grounds
  • A short stroll to Cheddar village and Cheddar Gorge

How is Cheddar Bridge Touring Park gorge-ous? Let its flow of former guests count the wheys: it’s scenic, award-winning and overlooks the Mendip Hills; it’s a former Cheddar in Bloom winner for its viewsome flowers, and it has the River Yeo flowing through it – just look at those pics.

If you’re a peace-loving peep, you might also brie chuffed to know that Cheddar Bridge is firmly for ages 18 and over, so no footballs should bang against your holiday home wall at six in the morning (unless your other half really can’t help it…).

Once you’re nice and rested, it’s a short stroll from the site to comely Cheddar village, simply striking Cheddar Gorge and the Mendips, the limestone hills that are part of a Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Norman Ancient Monument and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Friendly welcoming site. Spotlessly maintained and cleaned grounds and facilities. Very good location for walking into Cheddar. Levelish pitch on hard standing although needed ramps for minor adjustment. The facilities aren’t as modern as some but they work and are spotless. We would return. River Yeo runs alongside one side of site.

The pitches were level, the site was very secure. The facilities were very good and always clean. Washing up areas were both inside which was a bonus in the rain.
Staff were friendly. Location was great with local shops just a few minutes away.Pubs and takeaways were roughly 10 mins walk from site.

    Disliked:

My only point to make here is if you have a large awning the pitches are not that big and you have to leave a 10ft gap between awning and next pitch making things a bit snug.

Lovely welcome when we arrived at site and we were given the options of available pitches. One was right next to the river so we chose that one. Site well kept and the facilities good- toilets and showers were minimal (as in numbers) but very clean and regularly looked after. Site it very close to Cheddar town centre so walking distance and also walking distance to two small supermarkets. Good location for exploring the gorge and other nearby attractions in the Mendips.

    Disliked:

Warmer facilities- visiting at the end of October meant the showers were very cold- would love for the heating to be put on, windows and doors shut so showering wasn't such a cold experience.

From the manager...

thank you for the review so glad you had a good stay and we will hopefully see you another time. Sorry we didnt explan about the toilet and shower doors being open late morning til early evening that way we could keep them well ventilated ( for covid reasons ) doors windows were closed at 4 and the heating was back on full The hot water is on constantly at all times lets hope next season things will be easier

Great site - IF - you get the right pitch28/10/2021

Very clean, staff very friendly. Hot water, facilities are good. Nice and quiet, everybody really does.. keep quiet before 8am and after 11pm - and usually way before, maybe just a tv playing if you struggle to hear. The site is easy to get to just off the road. Location is probably one of the best being walking distance (not on a road!) to the town, gorge, Axminster etc. etc... Wifi 2quid for length of stay - great! Would stay again perhaps - on the right pitch number..

    Disliked:

So, if you get the right pitch, I would have given this 5 stars. We were parked on the 'roundabout' in the middle. Which feels like... you are in a car (van) park, surrounded all sides (pretty much) by others. So, get the right outside pitch - and there are good ones by the river, by the hedge - great. Inside - really not - sorry. The site is also right on the road, so if you are closer to it - well I notice it, I come away to get away from road noise. Just being open and honest. Great site overall - I would phone and check pitches.

From the manager...

thank you for the review must say we havent had comments before about a Round about not even sure where that bit is! Road noise is not a problem anyone has ever mentioned before ...

Lovely welcoming site. I stayed on a stream side pitch that was very tranquil and relaxing. Would have loved to stay for an extra night, however they were fully booked. Will definitely be back

    Disliked:

I can’t think of anything. Was a lovely one night stay. Pitching up may be more of a struggle if the site was fully occupied, but they may not bother the more experienced campers

Directions

Leave the M5 at Junction 22 onto the A371 towards Wells. Follow the signs for Cheddar (12 miles). Continue to follow signs for Cheddar village (do not turn left for the Gorge). Pass through the village with the Stone Cross on your left, and pass the church (the road bends left).

Cheddar Bridge Caravan and Camping Park is immediately on the right. The entrance to the park is over an ancient stone bridge.

Local attractions

Cheddar Gorge and Caves first, of course: you could spend days in one spot just gaping at the gorge, but there’s also climbing and caving to be had, wandering around the heart-stopping stalactite caves (do stand and gawp here too), and puffing up Jacobs Ladder and to the Lookout Tower – it’s only about 300 steps to the tower top…

Cheddar Bridge Touring Park is roughly halfway between the seaside at Weston-super-Mare and the tiny city of Wells for at least a couple of days’ worth of trips, with Bristol and Glastonbury also within a reasonable drive. Dive into Bath, also nearby, for Roman remains, spas and Jane Austen; the literature, arts and children’s literature festivals are well worth a look too if you’re in town at the right time.

Hikers and twitchers have the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels to keep them occupied, with the Mendips also well known as a climbing and caving centre. Look out for peregrine falcons and marsh harriers in both areas; to find out more about snipes and other feathery sorts around these parts, the RSPB has a reserve at West Sedgemoor.

Savvy shopper sort? Congratulations: Wells has a market every Saturday and Wednesday, and the biggest car boot market in the south-west is on every Sunday at Winchester Farm, only a quarter of a mile from Cheddar Bridge Touring Park: bring an extra suitcase for your goodies.
