Driftaway Camping Woodlands: Yurt in woods

General

  • Secluded site available for exclusive bookings
  • Half an hour's drive from Jurassic Coast beaches and walks
  • Meadow glamping with campfires allowed and private bathrooms

Here’s a little Somerset smasher. Driftaway Camping Woodlands is a small and secluded site five minutes’ drive from Chard: so petite, in fact, that you and your group can hire the whole place out to have this sweet rural retreat all to your deserving selves.

Comfy but down-to-earth quarters are ready and waiting for guests as they arrive, and all kitted out too… so folk can throw their bags down, get out and explore a comely site of meadow and woodland: there's a stream to follow too, and a pond that’s home to newts and frogs.

This isn't the place for you if you require posh trappings like fancy ovens and ensuite bathrooms; instead keep up the Famous Five vibe in the evenings with campfire cookouts. (Although if you fancy a rest, your friendly proprietors will deliver freshly cooked meals to your fireside, or knock up picnics for daytime wanderings).

And what might those wanderings include? The local area has surfing, swimming and fossil digging on the beaches, hill walks and cliff climbs, journeys through the ancient and more recent history of the West Country, and encounters with deer and meerkats: you’ll certainly be busy…

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

The tents do not have running water, however a water carrier is provided along with suitable washing up bowl.

An outstanding site, very private location with ample space for a young family. Liz was a very considerate host with a great local knowledge, if you were planning a day out the packed meals were awesome and there was something for everyone.

The Safari tent and the facilities (private) allowed you to feel like you were camping but added that extra comfort that would allow you to stay longer.

An easy 20 mins commute to the Jurassic coast on quiet country roads where you will almost be guaranteed to find fossils.

We would certainly return to this location.

It was lively but the road noise spoiled it for us29/07/2021

It was a lovely site with good facilities. A lovely woodland and great for children playing

    Disliked:

It wasn’t as rural as we thought it would be and was essentially someone’s extended garden. There was a lot of road noise as it wasn’t that far from quite a busy road.

From the manager...

Thank you for your 'likes' and we're sorry about your dislikes. Driftaway is set in a very rural part of the landscape and other than the tents and the shower shed facilities, all we do is cut the meadow grass. Other than that it's as rural as the rest of the area and there's little else we can do about that. We've intentionally minimised development of the site and kept it as 'off-grid' as possible.

Driftaway sits in approx 6 acres, combining both meadow of around 2.5 acres, woodland of around 2.5 acres and house and garden of around .75 acres. Whilst we understand that you felt it was an extension of our garden we would like to make it clear that the tents are not crammed in to the bottom of our garden! In fact there's acres of meadow and woodland space and we make no attempt to manicure the site, like a garden; all we do is cut the meadow grass.

For those that might be concerned about this, the nearest edge of the camping meadow area is still around 50m from our front door, while the nearest tent must be at least 100m away from the house. You can't see the tents from our house and the tents can't see our house, so no one is overlooked.

The road is around 150m away from the tents. It's a local, rural B road and this year, in particular, practically all roads in the south west are far busier than ever before. However, 'busy' is a relative term, and the comment might imply that this is a 'busy' and noisy main road, which could put people off. It's not a main road or route from or to anywhere in particular so it doesn't get lots of traffic other than the locals really, and it's too tight and twisty for trucks and lorries. In fact for most of the time the road is quiet as there's nothing travelling on it and you might only expect a car or tractor at the most every 2 or 3 minutes.

I make these points simply because the way they come across could be misinterpreted as saying that Driftaway is a noisy site, squashed in to someone's back garden, alongside a main road. We respect peoples objective comments and feedback and hope that our response provides some balance.

We also want to finish by saying that we really do appreciate the 'Likes' and don't want to imply that we are offended by the 'Dislike' feedback.

Absolutely everything! Couldnt fault our stay whatsoever! Liz and Nigel were fantastic! The quality, customer service and experience was truley outstanding! So much thought and effort put into this wonderful place! Beautifully decorated tents with comfy beds! Had everything from fairy lights to the kitchen sink.. quite literally! There was marshmallows for the kids, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, even dog treats, cooking oil and washing up stuff. Spare blankets, toys, games and books.. everything you could need! The shower facilities were wonderful! Fridges to keep food cold. Everything was immaculate! The place felt very private and had wonderful little trails in the woods with rope swings and streams. If you're quiet you'll even see the odd deer.. lots of space to enjoy! Loved the fossil hammer and lovely guest book to read! Truely a wonderful experience for young and older. Lots of nice things to do a short car ride away.. really was an exceptional experience that none of us will ever forget! Thank you so much Liz and Nigel for making such a wonderful place for others to enjoy! Will definitely be recommending and revisiting!

Local attractions

The pretty flint and stone town of Chard, five minutes’ drive away, is your nearest port of call for shops, pubs and eateries. The museum is also worth a mooch, not least for the tale of local inventor John Stringfellow, whose steam aeroplane was the first vehicle to fly under its own power way back in 1848.

Head further back in time at Dinosaurland Fossil Museum in Lyme Regis, and top it off with digging up your own ammonites and scaphites on Charmouth beach. For coastal walks interrupted by swims and paddles, Axmouth to Lyme Regis is a fine stretch that's home to birds and wildflowers, and occasionally swathed in sea mists. All are half an hour's drive from the site.

Sidle over to Seaton, also within half an hour, if you’d prefer to see the sea from the comfort of an old electric tram, or trek across the nature-filled marshlands alongside the River Axe on a well-signed boardwalk. To view the coast from the crest of a wave Jacob’s Ladder beach outside Sidmouth (45 minutes) is where the surfers do it.

Thrillseekers can screech their hearts out at the rides, go-karts and splash zone at Crealy Adventure Park (45 minutes) as well as taking more sedate trips on the miniature train, and meeting the meerkats for cute and furry encounters.

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (10.9 miles)
