General

  • Small, secluded and serviced site with meadow, stream, woods and pond
  • Half an hour's drive from Jurassic Coast beaches and walks
  • Within 50 minutes' drive of Crealy Adventure Park and Glastonbury

Here’s a little Somerset smasher. Driftaway Camping Woodlands is a small and secluded site, five minutes’ drive from Chard: so petite, in fact, that you and your group can hire the whole place out to have this sweet rural retreat all to your deserving selves.

Comfy but down-to-earth quarters are ready and waiting for guests as they arrive, and all kitted out too... so folk can throw their bags down, get out and explore a comely site of meadow and woodland: there's a stream to follow too, and a pond that’s home to newts and frogs.

This isn't the place for you if you require posh trappings like fancy ovens and ensuite bathrooms; instead keep up the Famous Five vibe in the evenings with campfire cookouts. (Although if you fancy a rest, your friendly proprietors will deliver freshly cooked meals to your fireside, or knock up picnics for daytime wanderings).

And what might those wanderings include? The local area has surfing, swimming and fossil digging on the beaches, hill walks and cliff climbs, journeys through the ancient and more recent history of the Westcountry, and encounters with deer and meerkats: you’ll certainly be busy...

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The tents do not have running water, however a water carrier is provided along with suitable washing up bowl.

Lovely site but accommodation & facilities lack charm & quality. 15/11/2018

Lovely to be on a site with only two places to stay. The family in the tent near us were delightful.
First evening was fun and we were able to cook outdoors and enjoy the peace and quiet.

    Disliked:

The mattress was horrendously uncomfortable - the springs left marks on our bodies they were so sharp and protruding. People have already complained about this and whoever changes the bedding must be very aware of this as you couldn't smooth the sheets without feeling it.
The second evening was horribly noisy from the holiday park next door. Pounding loud music until late at night - again this has been mentioned in previous reviews so was not a one-off. You can't sell somewhere as a quiet retreat and then expect them to be happy with this. I am sure you could talk to your neighbours and at least warn your guests in advance. We could have gone out for the evening - or not booked at all.
"Glamping" means glamorous camping but there was nothing glamorous about the mis-matched, chipped (and some unclean) crockery, broken utensils and crusty frying pan.
We also own an off-grid property are are well used to coping without running water or electricity but were very disappointed at how badly thought through the facilities were.
One evening we had torrential rain and had to cook indoors. One solar light and a couple of tealights are insufficient to cook by, a little more lighting would be both atmospheric and practical. The camping cooker was on top of a slippery wooden table - it was not secured at all and was easy to accidentally knock around when moving pans etc - dangerous! Also there was no protection to the wooden surface the cooker sat on from the grill so when you pulled the grill out the heat was directed directly onto the table - again dangerous!
There was a washing up bowl but you need two... otherwise where do you put the washed dishes to drain?? The kitchen sink near the loos was too far to go in pouring rain to do the washing up and was not under cover so you would get soaked doing dishes here in wet weather. It also only has a cold water supply.
The chemical loos were fine but the only place to wash your hands was in the same kitchen sink which I dont think was very hygienic. As this seemed to also be where people brushed their teeth (and was covered in spit) you had to clean it all before you could wash dishes there. Why isn't there a small hand basin in beside the shower?
There was dog poo around the yurt - not the fault of the owners but they need to do a quick walk around before new guests arrive as its very unpleasant to come across it directly outside the property.
Definitely not worth the money we paid... it could be really nice but it has all been done on the cheap with charity shop odd crockery, cheap utensils that had broken but not been replaced, the worst mattress ever. For the same money we could have stayed somewhere really smart and calling it "glamping" does not mean it has to be so basic - quite the reverse!! It was not cute and quirky just shoddy.
I suggest the owners stay there a few nights themselves (preferably in bad weather...) and they will perhaps realise how impracticable many of the facilities are. They could also try staying at some other similar places (as we have) and they will see their furnishings and facilities are way off the standard being provided by other similar ventures. I would not have highlighted so many issues if the price had been a lot lower but it's just too expensive for what is being provided. Sorry.

From the manager...

We understand that Driftaway camping is not going to be to everyone’s taste but we do take positive and constructive criticism seriously. In this instance, we felt it appropriate to respond to all the comments, constructive and otherwise.

Mattress: this was upgraded shortly after their stay, as clearly stated in the initial response to this comment in the reviews and well prior to this review, which was made 3 months after the stay and so proves we do listen to feedback.

Noise: pounding late night music is not a frequent occurrence here. Sometimes, however, other people do have parties and events which we are not aware of. We are sorry that this happened whilst they were staying but there is little we can do about events that are way beyond our control.

However, I can’t see where they found these ‘previous comments’ about noise as I am unable to find them on the PitchUp web site. There is no holiday park nearby, but there is a camp site – Alpine Grove, and since the new owners took over at the end of last season, we have not been aware of any noise other than this particular instance. We have also ensured that any references to complete peace or quiet are removed from the Pitch Up site.

There are many definitions of glamping and they do not all mean total ‘luxury’ or glamour. There should be as much ‘camping’ as ‘glamour’ when one is glamping. The idea is that is it a form of camping that involves accommodation with a few creature comforts – typically a pre-erected tent or structure, a bed rather than sleeping bags on the ground, a stove, and some washing and cooking facilities, once again not on the ground! It is NOT a singular definition of absolute luxury. There are a whole range of glamping offerings out there and Driftaway happens to pitch itself at the ‘camping in comfort’ end of the market. After all we do call ourselves Driftaway Camping not Driftaway Glamping.

Mismatched, chipped, damaged, unclean kitchen items: Unfortunately some items do and will get chipped or damaged in general use and sometimes this will slip through the net, so apologies if this was the case. However, we also rely on reasonable campers to tell us when things are not quite right and we can replace things. And sometimes it is just not possible to exactly replace broken or damaged items with identical pieces. Certainly, items should not be unclean and we apologise if this was the case and we will certainly endeavour to check everything more closely in future.

It is regrettable that they didn’t like the facilities, but they are what they are. Driftaway is not a posh, boutique glamping experience. We focus on ‘back to basics’ and keeping the camping in glamping. The site is intentionally ‘low impact’ and has suited practically every visitor since we started. To begin with we only had 2 portaloos and a shower on site and that was it. Since then we have added better, separate toilet sheds, a shared fridge freezer, solar lighting, electric power points and an outside sink to help with washing up. The fact that this is not all under cover with concrete paths between everything is a matter of choice, not neglect.

There is little we can do about the rain; it happens a lot in the UK. Whatever facilities we do provide there will occasionally be someone who feels they are not good enough for them and that they could, and would, do it a lot better themselves. We do not want to cover the meadow and woodlands in hard structures, paths, lighting and more and more facilities. If it is these things someone wants there are many other places one can stay, including a hotel. It also comes down to budget. Driftaway has grown organically; we do not have the funds (or the desire) to put in more and more building and development projects. The beauty of Driftaway is its simplicity.

However, a good point has been made about the cooker which will now be firmly fixed to the work surface along with the heat resistant sheet beneath it.

With regard to washing up, we do provide tea towels to dry up afterwards. There is little space in the yurt and to provide a draining board and other furniture is hardly practicable. The yurt has to allow space for the pull out beds which perhaps a couple staying on their own might not appreciate. However, we have been trying to come up with a better way of gravity feeding the water from the container in to the bowl and should have a solution for next season.

The kitchen sink was too far to walk in the rain. What can I say?

We can only apologise if other campers had been spitting in the sink and leaving it unclean. We have to rely on a degree of trust with our guests and we cannot police the site every minute of the day. Sorry if this was the case, but had we been told we could have done something about it.

OK, there isn’t a separate hand basin for the loos, but there is antibacterial hand wash in each loo, and a separate tap; this is camping after all.

Dog poo around the yurt – highly unlikely; however, it was almost certainly fox poo, or perhaps badger or deer, but probably fox and not dog poo. There is a lot of fox activity at Driftaway in particular, plus deer and badgers in our woods. It’s the countryside and you are sharing the woods with the wildlife whose permanent home it is. We often come across fox poo in the woods and meadows and when we see it we clear it up.

Sometimes people go and stay at places that are just not their ‘cup of tea’ and clearly this was the case in this instance. It sounds as though they were expecting far more than Driftaway ever proclaims to offer; it also rained and there was noise from nearby on one night. We are sorry Driftaway didn’t suit them. Driftaway ‘is what it is’ and glamping is not the sole domain of the luxurious, glamorous and boutique sites that the media love to focus on.

We absolutely loved staying in the yurt for a couple of nights. It was secluded facing towards the extensive woodlands where deadwood could be collected and the children could play safely. The yurt was large, clean and comfortable and had everything you could possibly need for a short stay except of course your own food. There are only two units on a large site offering privacy and silence. There is plenty of seasoned wood available for camp fires and a tripod and cast iron pot for cooking delicious stews over the fire. The internal gas cooker inside is useful for bacon and eggs for breakfast.
The owner/manager Liz is kind, helpful and very friendly and there is dedicated parking, a shared fridge and a dedicated toilet shed.

This was perfect for a weekend getaway. The host had thought about every detail including treats for the dogs and board games for the family. She was extremely accommodating and nothing seemed too much trouble. Of course everyone's favourite time was sitting by the fire pit, eating marshmallows and looking at the stars.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay. We are very sorry about the oven/cooker. It actually needed the burners cleaning out as food had dropped on to them and blocked them. This has now been done and it is working perfectly. But apologies for the inconvenience.

Local attractions

The pretty flint and stone town of Chard five minutes’ drive away,is your nearest port of call for shops, pubs and eateries. The museum is also worth a mooch, not least for the tale of local inventor John Stringfellow, whose steam aeroplane was the first vehicle to fly under its own power way back in 1848.

Head further back in time at Dinosaurland Fossil Museum in Lyme Regis, and top it off with digging up your own ammonites and scaphites on Charmouth beach. For coastal walks interrupted by swims and paddles, Axmouth to Lyme Regis is a fine stretch, home to birds and wildflowers, and occasionally swathed in sea mists. All are half an hour's drive from the site.

Sidle over to Seaton, also within half an hour, if you’d prefer to see the sea from the comfort of an old electric tram, or trek across the nature-filled marshlands alongside the River Axe on a well-signed boardwalk. To view the coast from the crest of a wave Jacob’s Ladder beach outside Sidmouth (45 minutes) is where the surfers do it.

Thrillseekers can screech their hearts out at the rides, go-karts and splash zone at Crealy Adventure Park (45 minutes) as well as taking more sedate trips on the miniature train, and meeting the meerkats for cute and furry encounters.

If you’re into myths and magic, get over to Glastonbury (50 minutes) for walks up the legendary tor, wanders of the ruined seventh-century abbey and pilgrimages to the ancient well.
