  • Glamping on a secret willow field close to Dorset's Jurassic Coast
  • A 15-minute drive from Lyme Regis, Bridport and Axminster
  • Foraging walks, yoga classes and massages available on site
Countryside, coast and classy accommodation all come together in one rather gorgeous package at South West Glamping, where upscale units have been set up in a peaceful willow field just outside the Dorset village of Whitchurch Canonicorum. This is a quiet rural spot within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but it’s easily reached from the A35 about a mile away. The Jurassic Coast is close by too – Charmouth and the South West Coast Path are 10 minutes’ drive away, and the towns of Lyme Regis and Bridport 15 minutes. That location opens up all sorts of options for days out, including walks and horse riding in the surrounding hills or paddleboarding, mackerel fishing and fossil hunting down at the coast. Attractions like Forde Abbey and the Axe Valley Wildlife Park are close by too – but if you’ve got something rather more relaxing in mind you may prefer to stick around on site and sign up for a massage, a yoga class, a meditation session or a foraging walk. Don’t worry if you don’t pick up enough for a full meal while foraging – there's a farm shop about a mile away for prepared meals or ingredients to take back to the campers’ kitchen. Dinner and breakfast are offered, and off site there are plenty of award-winning eateries to try out – this area is home to celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s famed River Cottage (15 minutes’ drive), after all. As well as the kitchen, other shared facilities on site include a hot shower and a compost toilet.

Route directions

The nearest postcode is DT6 6RF, but don't rely on this on its own. To find the site by car take the double wooden gate with three horseshoes on it (the one that’s not signposted Bonhays retreat centre). The centre is almost opposite Cross Farm on the outskirts of Whitchurch and on the road signposted to Lyme Regis on Berne Lane.

Local attractions

Walks around the local area are likely to take you through some lovely scenery and have you spotting a variety of wildlife too. If the kids are keen to meet cute farm animals as well, take them along to Foxdown Children’s Farm (15 minutes’ drive), where they can feed and pet a small group of friendly animals. Axe Valley Wildlife Park (15 minutes) is also a good option, with more exotic beasts like wallabies and lemurs. For more grownup days out, perhaps a stroll around Forde Abbey (25 minutes) or Montacute House (45 minutes) is your style? Alternatively, choose a meal or cooking course at River Cottage (15 minutes) for foodies, or a tour of Palmers Brewery (15 minutes) for beer drinkers. There’s something for all ages down at the coast, of course, whether you choose a good hike at Golden Cap (10 minutes), crazy golf and boat trips in Lyme Regis (15 minutes) or the Sea Life Centre and sandy beach in Weymouth (45 minutes).
