The beautiful lake

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open every day but Tuesday and Wednesday for most of the year, and every day during the summer holidays) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

What customers say

Litton Lakes is praised for its beautiful location, friendly staff, and spacious pitches. The lake is a major highlight, popular for swimming and paddleboarding, with a cafe and nearby pub also well-received. Facilities are generally clean, though some guests noted issues with water pressure and a lack of lights in the toilet block. While many enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, some found it too busy or noisy, particularly with large groups. There's a consensus that improvements to toilet and shower facilities would be beneficial.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The pitches were spacious and the area was beautiful. Had breakfast on our last day and was very impressed with the cafe staff and aesthetics of the building.

Disliked The road coming from Salisbury direction of A35 was very twisty and single track which made it difficult to manoeuvre. That's nothing to do with the site but just a warning if you have a motorhome approach from Bridport side.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Well looked after site in a great location to explore the local area. Staff were friendly and helpful. The water in the lake was clean and the setting was pretty idyllic and generally relaxing. Really good value for money.

Disliked Not a dislike as such but the water pressure in the new toilet block is only really sufficient for one shower at a time which is a shame as the bathroom facilities were otherwise good.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely site, informal pitches for groups, nice cafe, good facilities, the lake looked really inviting either lots of fellow campers using it for paddle boarding, wild swimming etc. Good communication with site owners too if needed

Disliked Quiet time between 9.00 pm -6.00 am, this is little earlier than other sites we visit, we were a group of around 15 people but we tried !

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great campsite, lovely lake, nice and flat pitches, very friendly and helpful.

Disliked The only thing I found a problem with was the water pressure in the showers, sometimes it literally became a dribble when other people were using the toilet/sinks/other showers etc, this really needs sorting out.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Really lovely spot, lake is beautiful, great coffee on our last morning. Fantastic that you could use firepits and enjoyed the relaxed approach to where you can pitch.

Disliked Lack of mirrors in the new toilet block, and water pressure was a bit disappointing. Also check in by mobile (as cafe was shut) was not very successful and fire pit hire wasn’t an option because it had been locked away 10 mins before the time we had originally been told to come back.

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
