The beautiful lake

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open every day but Tuesday and Wednesday for most of the year, and every day during the summer holidays) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

What customers say

This campsite offers spacious pitches in a beautiful location, renowned for its lovely lake which is ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. Visitors praise the friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities (especially the new shower block), and a relaxed atmosphere. A short walk leads to a welcoming local pub. While generally well-received, some feedback highlighted intermittent water pressure in showers and occasional noise from other campers.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Spacious pitches , loverly cafe on site overlooking a beautiful lake , for swimming paddle boarding or canoeing . Short walk to local pub which did food and had entertainment . A short drive to local beach .

Disliked New facilities were good but no hot water for washing hands and for having a shave , also showers were quite cold as the doors have a 10cm gap underneath which allowed the wind to whip under .

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Spacious pitches, toilet block and showers very clean. Lake was great for paddle boarding. It did have a lot of weed in it which was the only downside.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Spacious pitch with lovely views. Clean facilities when we arrived at the beginning of our long weekend (4 nights). Great location, excellent onsite cafe and lovely lakes etc.

Disliked The ‘new’ toilet block was extremely basic, considering we had no electric hookup. (No hairdryer/ sockets/mirrors). The showers were hot but not enclosed so really cold in the cubicle. The sinks to wash your hands in were like a trough, 2 out of 4 taps worked but were far too high pressure and were really difficult to use without getting completely soaked (not suitable for cleaning teeth) and just cold water. People were cleaning their teeth in the washing up sinks as there was nowhere else suitable. (We ended up using the one small sink provided in the disabled toilet/ bathroom). The facilities were not kept in a clean state (washing up sink blocked and dirty for 2 out of 4 days)

Bell tent (basic)

Liked It was lovely. Our host was wonderful.
Sitting outside by an open fire and having a bbq was awesome.
The weather was a bit iffy, but cleared up nicely by Sunday.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Stayed with a few friends and we all had an awesome time. Lovely simple set up for a very relaxed weekend. On the Friday night there was a group of people making a lot of noise into the night and they were dealt with and the following night we didn’t hear a peep. The site rules are there for a reason and it was nice to be on a site that didn’t let people ignore them. In all fantastic stay would definitely recommend if you want a quiet retreat

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
