  • Stays in a nine-acre grazing field close to public rights of way
  • Dorchester and West Bay within a half-hour drive
  • A half-hour drive from fossil-hunting days out on the Jurassic Coast
What might tempt you to take yourself to Tin Barn? Perhaps the pleasingly spacious pitches (around 10 x 18 metres), Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty views and having two friendly horses, George and Sol, as neighbours? Set at the end of a quiet country lane, this part of the Dorset countryside has some very lovely vistas across to Halstock (just over a mile away), where there's a handy community-run shop. As the guest numbers are low here, you'll never have anyone pitched in the way of your view either… The pretty village of Evershot, three miles away, is also within range if you fancy wandering over to see the source of the river Frome. All this back-country rambling is made easier by the local area's network of footpaths, which can be joined a few minutes' walk away from base. Driving around Dorset’s best destinations is also a doddle, as the site is just under three miles from the A37 Yeovil to Dorchester road. Yeovilton's popular Fleet Air Arm Museum is 25 minutes’ drive to the north, while sand and shingle beaches like West Bay on the Jurassic Coast are roughly half an hour to the south west. Amenities on site can be found in the tack room by the stables, where there's a shower, fridge, freezer, double sink, washing machine and dryer. At the top of the field there's also a portable toilet. Please note that this is a quiet rural site, where you'll be asked to keep noise down out of respect for other guests and neighbours, especially by night. If you're after a party site, you'll need to look elsewhere.

You can tell he take great pride in his site. Recycling facilities provided and the portaloo is exceptionally clean. Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The pitches are absolutely enormous! It's nice and quiet, with amazing views over the hills. There's a portaloo close to the tents and a proper bathroom in part of the barn, along with fridges, a freezer, a washing machine and a kettle. Tony was extremely friendly and accommodating, they have fire pits and wood you can buy as well.

Disliked: There aren't any pubs in the immediate vicinity, but there are two that can easily be included as part of a walk.

And is shower and toilet and portaloo's was great and all clean and tidy and he also as a horse a couple of Chickens and a couple of piglets was nice to see. Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Amazing site! Small and peaceful. Kids could run free and the advantage of being able to hire a fire pit was great! The owner, Tony, was absolutely the kindest and most helpful person, he checks in with campers and takes on board any suggestions. Lovely little range of products from the area can be found in the tack shed too all on an honesty box payment. Fantastic, unspoiled views of a beautiful area. Definitely going to return! There is a portaloo (or two depending on booked numbers) close to the tents, far cleaner than I expected them to be! The tack shed had a shower, toilet and sinks for dishes as well as washing machine and drier! Could not have asked for better! Facilities are clean and well maintained too.

Local attractions

The name Evershot (10 minutes' drive) may well ring a bell for bookworms, as this pretty Dorset village appears several times in Thomas Hardy's works – The Acorn Inn mentioned in 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' exists in real life and serves up rather good grub and ale if you fancy dropping by. Mapperton House and Gardens (15 minutes), an ornate Tudor manor with a bunch of highly regarded floral features, is another place to see if you fancy a taste of old Wessex. Yeovil (15 minutes) is also close by if you need a damp-day option like a trip to the cinema or a bit of bowling. After pootling around town for a bit, jump back in the car to see some top-rated out-of-town attractions like the National Trust-managed Montacute House (15 minutes) and the Fleet Air Arm Museum (25 minutes), a large collection bound to please sailors and aviation fans in equal measure. A little further afield, Dorchester (25 minutes) has a host of small museums and pretty walks, as well as Maiden Castle, one of the largest and best-preserved Iron Age hillforts in Europe (although Cadbury Castle, which is 30 minutes from base, certainly gives it a run for its money).
