On a hill overlooking the countryside

View out onto the field and hills

  • Quiet site with views over the Dorset countryside
  • Within half an hour’s drive of the Jurassic Coast and New Forest
  • Outdoor kitchen on site and a river nearby for wild swimming
Keen for a quiet break surrounded by the Dorset countryside? Top Field should tick your boxes. It’s very chilled at this hilltop site, and there's plenty of exploring to be done too, as it's just half an hour’s drive away from the New Forest National Park and the Jurassic Coast. Yes, the famed Jurassic Coast (a top spot for stunning beaches, fossil hunting activities, boat trips, and tasty local restaurants) should certainly be on your schedule: top spots like Durdle Door and Kimmeridge Bay are 40 minutes’ drive away. Elsewhere, the closest beach to the site is in Hamworthy (just outside of Poole), 25 minutes’ drive away. Not that you need to go far for a swim, as there is a river a short walk away for all your wild swimming needs. The field is also next to a bridleway, so go for a stroll whenever you fancy; more walking and cycling paths are in the surrounding area, and the South West Coast Path is half an hour's drive away. There are a couple of pubs within walking distance of Top Field too. The first is in Charlton, 15 minutes’ walk away, and the second is just a bit further on (half an hour’s walk from base) for a cosy meal or drinks. A shared outdoor kitchen, a composting toilet and an outdoor shower make up the facilities on site. Take note that very low sports cars will struggle to access the site; normal vehicles are fine.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Very friendly. Great view. Peaceful. Well kept, mown grass, flat pitches. Excellent shower, although shower head needs descaling! Compost loo clean and love the 'wee bale'. Kitchen area under cover and well stocked. Firepits available to use. Short flat cycle along old railway line into Blandford Forum, and plenty of other bridleways and footpaths in the area. We would definitely stay again! Note there is no chemical toilet waste disposal.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Perfect, basic facilities. We'd been to Studland and the usual campervan campsites were busy, packed tight. We were delighted that this forced us to look a few more miles further afield to "Top Field" a little haven for a park up. Not allowed to get crowded by the owners. My partner and I are very grateful to find this place in a nice corner of the UK. Will be back. Hope to try wild swimming there next. Thank you so much for making this field available.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The facilities were clean and easily accessible with a very good, warm shower and lots of walks in the area. 30-40 minute drive to the main attractions such as durdle door.

Disliked As many others have commented the road to the campsite was very stoney and uneven. Arriving at night we were instructed on the website to call on arrival however received no answer, luckily the campsite was quiet allowing us to enter ourselves and quickly pitch up our tent.

If you are after a beautiful basic site then book!

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked We absolutely love sites like this....basic but with a loo and sink for washing up. The view was beautiful from both directions which is always a bonus
The kids all loved the outdoor shower and said it was very warm.
There was a gymnastic type mat and a goal and the kids were in absolute heaven. We used the fire pit and just sat and talked with the kids until half midnight...our kind of therapy ❤️
We will definitely be back.

Disliked The track up to the site makes you feel you might have taken the wrong route...trust the process! We have a Crafter and was fine going up and down it.
As there is one loo it could be tricky if it got busy, but there was only 4 other groups there so there was no issue for us.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The people there were so friendly and helpful. We didn’t use the stove but having it there and available was great.
Fire pit was also very good and perfectly set up for us to have a small camp fire with the children.

The fee of £24 per night is excessive for the facilities offered.

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Peaceful location. Level pitches.

Disliked The track up the campsite was a lot worse than mentioned in the details. It is extremely rocky, uneven and rough.
The long drop composting toilet (there is only one) is in need of a deep clean, especially around the seat. It needs a cleaning solution and a brush to remove poo deposits on the seat and edge of seat (and lid). As it is the only loo for all adults and children to use it needs regular cleaning throughout the day. It would help if an eco cleaner spray was left in there for guests to use, along with hand sanitiser. The sink in the kitchen area was the only thing that was safe to use (once I’d cleaned it). The rest of the kitchen facilities were dirty and the gas burners are in bad condition.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback and for staying at Top Field. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that some aspects of your visit didn’t meet your expectations, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

We aim to be transparent in our advert, noting that the track is uneven and may not suit very low vehicles, but that normal vehicles are fine. The track has been accessed by nearly all guests over the past year without issue, except one van during very wet conditions. We’ll review our description again to ensure it sets clear expectations.

Regarding the composting toilet, we clean it daily and use it ourselves, so maintaining hygiene is important to us. The lid is fixed and does not lift, so there is no waste under the lid, and any deposits are well below the seat. There were only three other camping groups on site during your stay, and we have found that one regularly cleaned loo is generally sufficient for the number of guests. We do usually provide an eco-friendly cleaning spray, but it appears to have been removed by another guest on this occasion—thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we will check more frequently in future. There is always a sink and soap for handwashing in the kitchen area.

The outdoor kitchen was thoroughly cleaned before your arrival, and we regularly use the gas burners ourselves without issue. We encourage guests to let us know during their stay if anything needs attention so we can address it promptly.

We strive to offer an affordable and authentic countryside camping experience, with a high season rate of £25 per night—well below the Dorset average for similar pitches. Our facilities, including the shared outdoor kitchen, composting toilet, and outdoor shower, are as described in our advert. We hope that guests enjoy the peaceful setting, nearby river for wild swimming, local walks and cycle routes, and pubs within walking distance.

Please make sure that you enter the field at the top of the hill. Please don't drive down the long drive to the house, as the house is private and completely separate from the campsite. There is a stony track up to the site. Most vehicles pass it without an issue, but you will need to drive slowly, straddling the water drain gulley.
