General

  • Jurassic Coast farm site 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth
  • Farm shop serving food and pub with garden within 1-2 minutes' stroll
  • Well-spaced pitches and spotless facilities

What a spectacularly well set site this is... do see if you can settle in for quite some time...

Portesham Dairy Farm is in peaceful Dorset countryside on the Jurassic Coast (week one of your hol) and easily accessible to Weymouth, Dorchester and Dorset beaches: that should cover weeks two and three... Your eats and drinks are excellently sorted from here too, as a farm shop with café is a minute's amble from the site, and the owners' local, the King's Arms, is within a couple of minutes' stroll.

The site is on the edge of the village of Portesham, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth. It's family run with a dedicated team that takes pride in its modern clean amenities: the purpose-built facilities block comes with toilets, showers, basins, hairdryers and hand dryers, baby changing area and an enclosed washing-up space with hot and cold water. There's also a laundry room (with drinks machine and tourist info), as well as three chemical disposal points across the site.

A small play area is to hand for kids. The site welcomes quiet and friendly dogs; a footpath leads from the farm across fields and countryside.

Location, walking distance to good pub / food. Nearby shop and walks. Easy drive to sea and towns. Site facilities generally good. We visited out of season and the site was very quiet with very few residents. Very easy access with minimal admin.

Great location to see the glorious Dorset countryside & coast. Walking distance to farm shop & local pub serving good food.
Facilities were excellent, clean toilets and showers with other useful options avail e.g. dishwashing (we didn’t use them but a nice option). Pitch was level and with plenty of room.
Liked the confirmation email as it clearly explained the process for checking in - pitch allocated and site map provided - very easy to understand and perfect for us who were just passing through for one night. Nice touch to provide WiFi info in email.
We didn’t see anyone from the site or visit reception but that suited us.

    Disliked:

Not a particularly pretty site but perfect for exploring the local area.

It was a very clean, tidy site, and the facilities were fair

    Disliked:

I understand why, but I disliked the big sprawl of "hard" pitches, and the resident 50 odd caravans, I think grass pitches make it feel like a camp-site, this gave me a feeling of "lay by" parking. If there must be "fixed" caravans, I feel they would be better at the bottom of the site, as you drive in that is all you are confronted with.
I certainly would not stay here if I could not have a grass site.

The site is easy to find, is very clean and spacious pitch. Near to a nice village shop and local pub serving excellent food. Only a few minutes drive to Abbotsbury and Chesil beach.

    Disliked:

Could do with a few more toilets and maybe a little play area for kids. Also Wifi was a little weak on the far pitches, but we only needed that for the kids in the evening so wasnt a major issuel

Clean site, in a great countryside location 11/05/2019

  • Liked:

Clean and quiet site. We particularly liked the the footpath near the entrance to the site, which meant we could walk our dog without needing to drive anywhere, or even go on a road! And it is worth it for the beautiful Dorset countryside! Also the village pub, King’s Arms, is a short walk, and the beer & food are excellent.
The showers were good, plenty warm enough and powerful. We didn’t use the Laundry, or the Hot drink vending machine, in the same room, so can’t comment. But it all looked very clean and orderly.

    Disliked:

The reception is accessed via a separate entrance to the site, which was confusing for me as a 1st time visitor.
This is not a criticism, but unusually quiet from an owner/warden presence. My wife thinks she saw someone driving around checking pitches, but otherwise we didn’t see anyone.
The village farm shop/cafe, is not dog friendly, although if the weather is good, you can eat outside with your dog.
There is one rubbish/recycle area, and call me lazy, but I would have like a second bin area for this relatively large site.

Local attractions

However long you stay here (at least a couple of weeks, preferably), there's enough to see and do around Dorset to entertain all ages and tastes. Ditch the car if you prefer: the local bus stop is 150 yards from the farm entrance, to pick up the Jurassic Coast route bus (X53) running from Exeter to Poole.

The Portesham Dairy Farm team recommends a climb up to the Hardy Monument on Black Down (five minutes' drive) as a nifty way to see Dorset and its splendid coastline (the monument isn't to the writer Thomas Hardy as you might expect in these parts, but to Vice Admiral Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; do be sure to tell that to the kids). You should be able to see the Devon coast, the Mendip Hills and the Isle of Wight from here on a clear day; just clamber the 120 steps up to the viewpoint.

Also much recommended is Abbotsbury, home of the famed swannery as well as subtropical gardens and a kids' farm (also five minutes' drive), and the golden sands, sand sculptures and fair rides of Weymouth, 15 minutes from the farm. Portland (25 minutes) is also a must: visit the lighthouse, forage for fossils and come down the hill from the top of town for stunning views of the coast and Chesil Beach.

Must see

  • Abbotsbury Swannery (1.7 miles)
  • Radipole Lake Nature Reserve (5.8 miles)
  • Weymouth Sea Life Park and Marine Sanctuary (5.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Max Gate (6.7 miles)
  • Hardy's Cottage (8.7 miles)
