General

  • Jurassic Coast farm site 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth
  • Farm shop serving food and pub with garden within 1-2 minutes' stroll
  • Well-spaced pitches and spotless facilities

What a spectacularly well set site this is... do see if you can settle in for quite some time...

Portesham Dairy Farm is in peaceful Dorset countryside on the Jurassic Coast (week one of your hol) and easily accessible to Weymouth, Dorchester and Dorset beaches: that should cover weeks two and three... Your eats and drinks are excellently sorted from here too, as a farm shop with café is a minute's amble from the site, and the owners' local, the King's Arms, is within a couple of minutes' stroll.

The site is on the edge of the village of Portesham, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth. It's family run with a dedicated team that takes pride in its modern clean amenities: the purpose-built facilities block comes with toilets, showers, basins, hairdryers and hand dryers, baby changing area and an enclosed washing-up space with hot and cold water. There's also a laundry room (with drinks machine and tourist info), as well as three chemical disposal points across the site.

A small play area is to hand for kids. The site welcomes quiet and friendly dogs; a footpath leads from the farm across fields and countryside.

clean, quiet site with great hot showers and dogs welcomed 22/10/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Jean M. Confirmed

  • Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (super)

  • Liked:

spacious plots, hot powerful showers, dogs welcomed and good dog walking area. Good facilities for washing, laundry, waste disposal etc though not all obviously marked on the site itself and took a bit of wandering about and opening doors to see what was behind them!

    Disliked:

No dog poo bins which would have been useful. Couldn't get wifi at the end of the site where we were but that was no big deal..

  • Liked:

Site was clean and well equipped for camping needs. Toilets and showers very clean and as the site is small all are easy to get to. The site is also well lit, if a little to well lit.

    Disliked:

The only thing I didn't like is there is a little to much lighting. We camped which means it's hard to keep out the light. An option to switch them off would have been useful.

  • Liked:

Good sized pitch. Quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful surrounding countryside and central to many other sights. The facilities were excellent and the showers (we have extensive experience of shower units all over Europe and Scandinavia) were the best yet - right height, perfect temperature and wet free area for clothing with chair and sufficient hangers plus soap tray. Very reasonably priced, this little site is delightful. We shall recommend it to anyone visiting Dorset and will stay there again ourselves.

    Very reasonable price
    Fully serviced pitches
Location was excellent for walking to Abbotsbury along bridlepath on a disused railway
    Facilities all serviceable and clean
Local village of Portesham very close with a pub and also a cafe/delicatessant

    Disliked:

Basic open site. Large open field with open pitches.
About 65% occupancy but only about 10% of caravans were occupied making the whole site feel strangely deserted.
Apart from one block, facilities in portacabins

Local attractions

However long you stay here (at least a couple of weeks, preferably), there's enough to see and do around Dorset to entertain all ages and tastes. Ditch the car if you prefer: the local bus stop is 150 yards from the farm entrance, to pick up the Jurassic Coast route bus (X53) running from Exeter to Poole.

The Portesham Dairy Farm team recommends a climb up to the Hardy Monument on Black Down (five minutes' drive) as a nifty way to see Dorset and its splendid coastline (the monument isn't to the writer Thomas Hardy as you might expect in these parts, but to Vice Admiral Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; do be sure to tell that to the kids). You should be able to see the Devon coast, the Mendip Hills and the Isle of Wight from here on a clear day; just clamber the 120 steps up to the viewpoint.

Also much recommended is Abbotsbury, home of the famed swannery as well as subtropical gardens and a kids' farm (also five minutes' drive), and the golden sands, sand sculptures and fair rides of Weymouth, 15 minutes from the farm. Portland (25 minutes) is also a must: visit the lighthouse, forage for fossils and come down the hill from the top of town for stunning views of the coast and Chesil Beach.

Must see

  • Abbotsbury Swannery (1.7 miles)
  • Radipole Lake Nature Reserve (5.8 miles)
  • Weymouth Sea Life Park and Marine Sanctuary (5.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Max Gate (6.7 miles)
  • Hardy's Cottage (8.7 miles)
