  • Farm shop serving food and pub with garden within 1-2 minutes' stroll
  • Well-spaced pitches and spotless facilities
What a spectacularly well set site this is… do try your best to settle in for quite some time… Portesham Dairy Farm Camp Site is in peaceful Dorset countryside on the Jurassic Coast (week one of your hol) and easily accessible to Weymouth, Dorchester and the Dorset beaches: that should cover weeks two and three… Your eats and drinks are excellently sorted from here too, as a farm shop with café is a minute's amble from the site, and the owners' local, the King's Arms, is within a couple of minutes' stroll. The site is on the edge of the village of Portesham, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth. It's family run with a dedicated team that takes pride in its modern clean amenities: the purpose-built facilities block comes with toilets, showers, basins, hairdryers and hand dryers, baby changing area and an enclosed washing-up space with hot and cold water. There's also a laundry room (with drinks machine and tourist info), as well as three chemical disposal points across the site. A small play area is to hand for kids. The site welcomes quiet and friendly dogs; a footpath leads from the farm across fields and countryside.

Fully-serviced hardstanding tent or motorhome pitch (small, super)

Liked Vending machines were brilliant, if a little overpriced. Location was good. Cleanliness was impressive all around, seemed like they must have had someone cleaning facilities every few hours. Everything just worked too, which you don't always get nowadays. I think the WiFi was faster than I get at home!

Disliked We were in a lovely quiet corner but there was a group by the toilets being extremely noisy late into the night which would have annoyed us had our pitch been near them. I know the site has rules on this, but good to enforce them.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (large, super)

Liked Clean site, clean facilities, great location and quiet . Dog friendly with a large exercise field , and plenty of walks and things to do nearby. A bus stop 200 yards from the site . Free wifi, but can dip out at busy times.
Added bonus farm shop and cafe across the road , 350 yards in the village a great pub that served food and dog friendly. Would definitely recommend and come again.

Disliked Facilities limited and can get very busy.

Liked Easy booking, fantastic communication. On arrival it’s easy with the ANPR security.
Good facilities, very clean, ample sized, flat pitches.
Very good proximity to a nice farm shop/ cafe and local pub (both do very good food). Easy drive distance to Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorchester and Durdledoor.

Disliked Nothing much

Electric hardstanding touring pitch (medium, semi-serviced)

Liked Second visit to this lovely campsite and it still doesn’t disappoint. Vending machines for the essentials, black cherry milkshake to die for. 2 minute stroll to a lovely pub. Farm shop just over the road. Clean hot showers and everything spotlessly clean. One of our favourites.

From the manager: Many thanks for your very kind review and we are so pleased that we are one of your favourite campsites. We look forward to your 3rd visit.

Electric grass pitch (medium)

Liked very clean toilets and showers, proximity to village and pub/farm shop. Lovely flat site in a lovely location. Can’t fault the site itself 10/10.

Disliked Some groups were noisy with very noisy reactive dogs.. Some groups played music and were insensitive to others.
A very big site so we possibly wouldn’t stay again.

Local attractions

However long you stay here (at least a couple of weeks, preferably), there's enough to see and do around Dorset to entertain all ages and tastes. Ditch the car if you prefer: the local bus stop is 150 yards from the farm entrance, to pick up the Jurassic Coast route bus (X53) running from Exeter to Poole. The Portesham Dairy Farm team recommends a climb up to the Hardy Monument on Black Down (five minutes' drive) as a nifty way to see Dorset and its splendid coastline (the monument isn't to the writer Thomas Hardy as you might expect in these parts, but to Vice Admiral Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; do be sure to tell that to the kids). You should be able to see the Devon coast, the Mendip Hills and the Isle of Wight from here on a clear day; just clamber the 120 steps up to the viewpoint. Also much recommended is Abbotsbury, home of the famed swannery as well as subtropical gardens and a kids' farm (also five minutes' drive), and the golden sands, sand sculptures and fair rides of Weymouth, 15 minutes from the farm. Portland (25 minutes) is also a must: visit the lighthouse, forage for fossils and come down the hill from the top of town for stunning views of the coast and Chesil Beach.
