What a spectacularly well set site this is… do try your best to settle in for quite some time… Portesham Dairy Farm Camp Site is in peaceful Dorset countryside on the Jurassic Coast (week one of your hol) and easily accessible to Weymouth, Dorchester and the Dorset beaches: that should cover weeks two and three… Your eats and drinks are excellently sorted from here too, as a farm shop with café is a minute's amble from the site, and the owners' local, the King's Arms, is within a couple of minutes' stroll. The site is on the edge of the village of Portesham, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth. It's family run with a dedicated team that takes pride in its modern clean amenities: the purpose-built facilities block comes with toilets, showers, basins, hairdryers and hand dryers, baby changing area and an enclosed washing-up space with hot and cold water. There's also a laundry room (with drinks machine and tourist info), as well as three chemical disposal points across the site. A small play area is to hand for kids. The site welcomes quiet and friendly dogs; a footpath leads from the farm across fields and countryside.

Liked Beautifully maintained site. Great size fully serviced pitches, friendly staff. Toilets and showers clean and modern. Great dog exercising field. Vending area an added bonus offering fresh milk and a variety of foods and drinks. Number plate recognition for easy entry and exit. Lovely pub and farm shop and cafe just across the road.

Fully-serviced grass pitch (large, super)

Liked We love this site, so peaceful, great for kids to run around without having to worry about them, the amenities are always spotless and well looked after, the vending machines just get better, love the pizza. Some may think it's basic, but we call it bliss. We have been visiting for a few years now and always keep coming back.

Disliked My husband thinks the wifi is a bit slow, but it has improved over the years

Liked The facilities are kept absolutely spotless and all the staff we interacted with are polite, friendly and helpful. The showers are always hot and in 7 days I never had to wait for one to be free. The pub is less than 5b mins away and the bus directly outside. We had a great time. This was our second visit the first being about 4 years ago.

Liked The staff are great! Very knowledgeable about the area, friendly and accommodating.
The toilet & shower facilities are spotlessly clean. The individual showers are user friendly and big.
The fully serviced pitches are very good and well maintained
The vending area is very well stocked with pretty much everything you need, available. I’ve never experienced a pizza vending machine and was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pizzas it churned out. As good as any I’ve had in pizza chain restaurants and good value.
I like the entrance and exit procedure and felt very safe there, as it all works on number plate recognition.

Disliked The site as a whole lacks any character. There are no hedges or trees to separate any of the pitches or distinguish between different areas. It made it feel very functional in general.
Although each pitch had plenty of space, I did feel that it was quite claustrophobic, in the spot where we were, (pitch 105). Thankfully we were in a group of 4 caravans in that area, so it actually worked out really well for us, however, had we been travelling on our own, I would have felt neighbouring caravans would have probably been encroaching on space and privacy.

However long you stay here (at least a couple of weeks, preferably), there's enough to see and do around Dorset to entertain all ages and tastes. Ditch the car if you prefer: the local bus stop is 150 yards from the farm entrance, to pick up the Jurassic Coast route bus (X53) running from Exeter to Poole. The Portesham Dairy Farm team recommends a climb up to the Hardy Monument on Black Down (five minutes' drive) as a nifty way to see Dorset and its splendid coastline (the monument isn't to the writer Thomas Hardy as you might expect in these parts, but to Vice Admiral Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; do be sure to tell that to the kids). You should be able to see the Devon coast, the Mendip Hills and the Isle of Wight from here on a clear day; just clamber the 120 steps up to the viewpoint. Also much recommended is Abbotsbury, home of the famed swannery as well as subtropical gardens and a kids' farm (also five minutes' drive), and the golden sands, sand sculptures and fair rides of Weymouth, 15 minutes from the farm. Portland (25 minutes) is also a must: visit the lighthouse, forage for fossils and come down the hill from the top of town for stunning views of the coast and Chesil Beach.
