  • Peaceful rural site by the Frome river, 10 minutes' drive from Wool
  • Half an hour's drive from the beaches of the Jurassic Coast
  • Less than 10 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
Planning some Purbeck pottering? Pick a pitch at Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping, 10 minutes' drive from Wool, and you’ll be in a prime position for poking around this pretty corner of Dorset. Bring along your boots and bikes, for there are some great walks and cycle rides to be had in the area around the site (including the 25-minute trot to the local pub – huzzah for a path that ends in pints). Kids rolling their eyes at the idea of rural rambles? The twin attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum are 10 minutes away in the car, and there’s heaps more days out within half an hour: beaches, sea kayaking, steam train rides and an ancient castle among them. Life on site meanders along at a peaceful pace – it’s a most serene setting, surrounded by woodland and with the Frome river flowing by, and there’s plenty of space to walk dogs or stoke up a fire (small firepits only, ta – you wouldn’t want to set the place alight now). Take a quiet wander around the grounds and you may just spot the local deer herd popping by to graze. Naturally, this chilled vibe doesn’t lend itself to heaps of noisy activity, so facilities here have been kept to just the basics: the smart modern toilet block has loos, showers and a washing-up area and is proudly scrubbed clean on a daily basis.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Location. Quiet. Lovely countryside.

Disliked Showers - very low water volume.

Cleanliness - clean sinks & showers, outer areas of toilets dirty. I would say not been cleaned for a good couple of weeks. Unhygeinic in hot weather.

Large group 10+ very noisy after 11pm and up again at 8am throwing balls around. Everyone else was trying to sleep. I had to go over and ask them to keep the noise down. The campsite wardens need to walk round after 11pm. No sign of anyone.

Not the campsites fault but the ground was rock hard so bring a good mallet to get the pegs in.

Electric grass pitch

Liked EHU. Welcome was friendly. Pitch was flat and level.

Disliked Toilets were smelly and the washbasins were outside rather than inside the building. Some of the taps only had hot water - not ideal for brushing teeth. Only one shower in the women’s block - for the whole site. Considering the cost, not very impressed with how close to other campers we were. Felt pretty packed in and overpriced.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely setting and flexible pitches. We were able to choose where to pitch. The owner is kind and helpful. We enjoyed a fire pit (£12 including firefighter and wood) and pizza on site (£12 each). Facilities were clean and central on site.

Disliked Only three showers with curtains and communal changing area. One shower stayed cold.

Shepherd's hut

Liked The black out blinds in the shepherds hut were good…

Disliked Upon arrival I thought I’d accidentally booked onto a filming set for Shameless, as you are greeted by some very dingy looking caravans which I assume is where the “owner” resides. You’re told to ring a number when you arrive but there is zero phone signal there. The check in process was very unorganised.

We arrived at around 4pm, before going out for a few hours. At 9pm as we went to go to bed I realised the Yale lock on the shepherds hut was faulty. I asked a family in the next hut to have a look incase it was user error but they also could not get it to work. When we arrived, I was told to return to the place we checked in if any problems, and so this is what I did. I was met with a (from Grant) “what do you want me to do about it”, and constant complaints that he didn’t know what I was talking about. He returned to the hut with my 9 year old son and I and once inside, continued to be incredibly rude.

I honestly was in utter shock and dismay that someone would have the audacity to speak to me like he was, particularly as a paying customer with my young son right there. I told him I didn’t like the way he was behaving towards me, to which he told us to we had to leave right away (bare in mind he knew it had taken us 5 hours to drive there and it was now 9pm!). I have honestly never been made to feel like he made me feel in that moment - his behaviour made both my son and I cry. Upon seeing me get upset, Grant put his arm on me as though to hug me so I moved away.

Honestly if it wasn’t for the kindness of other families staying on the site, we would’ve packed up and left. I can also see one of them has left a review which mentions how I was treated. I barely slept that night, he is not a nice man at all. They spoke to Grant who was complaining that he “didn’t have the patience” for this. We did end up staying and I planned to leave the next day, but the lovely families we met helped to turn our trip around and I actively did what I could to avoid seeing him again.

I am not convinced that Grant can be the owner because any respectable business owner would not treat anyone like he did my son and I, especially paying customers.

Unfortunately Pitch Up has been useless, stating that I need to resolve this with the owner. I asked them for the owners details and have sent several emails which have all gone unanswered. I will keep going though as I’m not willing to let this go - this rude “man” should not be able to treat paying customers like this. Whilst our holiday did improve, it is unfortunately tainted by the behaviour of the supposed owner.

I will also add just for information, and this isn’t the sites fault but the internet signal is shocking - if you’re planning days out etc you need to pre plan these because you need to drive a few miles before you get internet / ability to use navigation apps etc.

Local attractions

If you’re into all things vehicular, start your local exploration at The Tank Museum, 10 minutes’ drive away – the collection of more than 300 tanks (including Little Willie, the world’s first) is renowned as the world’s finest. Follow up with a steam-powered ride on the Swanage Railway (25 minutes away). As you ride the rails, you’ll pass the ruins of Corfe Castle, built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror – it’s about 15 minutes from the site if you’d like to take a closer look. A mile or so up the road from the castle is the cute Wareham Bears, where more than 200 teddies live in a model village. For real-life animal antics, take the 10-minute drive to Monkey World to see the apes that found TV fame in the UK as stars of the Monkey Life. And one can't ignore the Jurassic Coast – it’ll take you 20 minutes or so to drive to some of its most stunning sights, including Lulworth Cove, Man O’War beach and the giant stone arch Durdle Door. A walk on the South West Coast Path is an excellent way to take it all in, or you could try paddleboarding, sea kayaking or coasteering to get a different view.
