General

  • Award-winning holiday park a mile from the beach in Swanage
  • Half an hour's drive from Monkey World and Durdle Door
  • Lively entertainment programme at the site's show bar

Three cheers for this one on Dorset's Jurassic Coast: Herston Caravan and Camping is an award-winning and family-friendly site a five-minute drive from the town of Swanage and its sandy beach.

Everyone should find a full programme of stuff to do see and do in this neck of the woods: perhaps rides on the steam-powered Swanage Railway, windsurfing down at Swanage Bay or clifftop walks on the South West Coast Path. The popular attractions of Corfe Castle, Old Harry Rocks and Durdle Door are all under half an hour's drive away too.

Facilities on site include free wifi, a playground and a mini market that also functions as a visitor information centre. The café/bar sells meals, coffees and a dizzying range of cocktails, and there's also a separate show bar with dance floor and a lively entertainment programme of live music, karaoke and other events.

The spacious and clean toilet blocks have plentiful hot showers, family bathrooms and disabled facilities, and the site also has a launderette and a washing-up area.

Dogs are welcome at the park as long as they are kept on a lead and cleaned up after.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The gentleman was lovely on our arrival and said we could park in a spot that was nearer the showers and toilet , the spot was nice and secluded given privacy . Unfortunately our chihuahua was awake most of the night being nosey as to what the noise of the cows were , however for our second night we were offered to go further back in the fields to remedy that but we were called back home so had to get back for an emergency.
We will return another time , place is friendly and spacious, didn’t have time to use showers but all seemed fine .

    Disliked:

Couldn’t get hot water in toilets to wash hands .

Super sized pitch. Good amount of Space between pitches. Services to pitch included shared water connection ( the other pitch remained connected so had to disconnect them to get water. Beautiful views. Fairly quiet but the site was only partially full. Good toilet and shower facilities with large shower area and inclusive toilet. Up to date facilities but the water temperature in the shower varied from hot to cold during a shower. During our stay we found the showers and toilets clean but the floor was difficult to keep clean because the mud comes in on the shoes and the floor mop doesn’t clean it very well. The drain in the corner of the floor didn’t do its job as well as it could.
The shop on site has all the things you need, milk bread etc.
Thereb was a band playing in the bar both on Friday and Saturday night as part of the Blues Festival and this was really great.
We used the footpath from the site near our pitch to walk down to the beach and town. This is a lovely walk and takes about 20 minutes at a good walking speed. We did use our phone torches when we took the same route back at night.
We were at Herston for the Swanage Blues Festival - had amazing weather - great bands playing throughout the town.
    We will be back.

    Disliked:

Some site users were just too loud either shouting and playing loud music. All they need to do is turn it down and respect the other site users.

Quiet and nice walk to town

    Disliked:

No food apart from burger bar even though it mentions restaurant in description.
Shower rooms dirty. Each shower is within its own room with toilet and basin. Luckily used our own facilities.
If you are going any day apart from Friday and Saturday there is no entertainment.

Good location for Swanage09/10/2023

    On-site shop for consumables.
Walk into Swanage is a healthy and pleasant 25 minutes, partly over fields.

    Disliked:

Not enough toilet and washing facilities for the number of pitches. Combined WC/shower cubicles result in lack of availability and waiting, even early at the start of the morning. For this size of site, the same number again of each of male and of female WCs would be better.
Given the rather basic facilities, the higher than typical pitch fees are not justified.

The pitches are mostly flat with good services. A short walk into the town, which has plenty of places to eat and drink and some small independent shops.
There is an onsite bar, but it only opens on weekends this time of year

    Disliked:

You have to drive through the permanent residence to get to the camping field, it was a little off putting, but worth it once you got to the field

Local attractions

A five-minute drive gets you into Swanage for sandy walks, sandcastle building, splashing about and more serious watersports. To kayak round the cliffs and coves of the Jurassic Coast, make for Knoll beach (10 minutes' drive) or Lulworth Cove (40 minutes) to hire your craft and see the place from sea level.

The 630 mile-long South West Coast Path passes through town: pick it up and head eastwards to the Studland and Godlington Heath Nature Reserve to see the wild and nature-filled Wessex that inspired Thomas Hardy (or hire a steed from the trekking centre for extra historical detail). Going west, the path goes past the splendid sights of Stair Hole and Durdle Door (40 minutes), while descents of varying steepness lead down to quiet and cove-like beaches like Winspit (accessible only on foot from Worth Matravers, 10 minutes away) and Kimmeridge (half an hour).

For a spot of time travel, pick up the Swanage Railway for a nine-mile steam trip to Wareham, perhaps stopping off en route for a clamber round the ruins of Corfe Castle (10 minutes).

Younger visitors should have a ball among the play barns, pedal go-karts and pettable animals at the Putlake Adventure Farm, five minutes away. Further afield, there are pony rides, deer safaris, tractor trips and bouncy castles at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (30 minutes), and at a similar distance the heavy hardware in The Tank Museum and the charming residents of Monkey World should keep everyone's monkeys out of mischief.
