  • Holiday park one mile from the beach in Swanage
  • Half an hour's drive from Monkey World and Durdle Door
  • Visitor information, shop and takeaway on site; dogs welcome
Three cheers for this one on Dorset's Jurassic Coast: Herston Caravan and Camping is a family-friendly site only five minutes' drive away from the town of Swanage and its sandy beach. Everyone should find a full programme of stuff to do and see in this neck of the woods: perhaps rides on the steam-powered Swanage Railway, windsurfing down at Swanage Bay or clifftop walks on the South West Coast Path. The popular attractions of Corfe Castle, Old Harry Rocks and Durdle Door are all under half an hour's drive away too. Facilities on site include a mini market that also functions as a visitor information centre, and a takeaway for grabbing food when you're hungry. The spacious and clean toilet blocks have plentiful hot showers, family bathrooms, disabled facilities and washing-up areas. Dogs are also welcome at the park as long as they are kept on a lead and cleaned up after.

What customers say

This campsite boasts a fantastic location, a short walk to Swanage. Many guests praise the friendly staff, clean facilities, and spacious pitches. However, a recurring theme is the site's tired appearance and dated facilities, with frequent mentions of cleanliness issues in toilets and showers, and a lack of maintenance in some areas. While some enjoy the on-site amenities, others note their limited availability. Despite the drawbacks, the location and friendly atmosphere lead many to recommend and return.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Large site & good location. Friendly staff

Disliked Too many speed bumps. Could do with a barn bar rather than a tent. Toilets/shower need a little TLC but handy having them as huts.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Location, on site services

Disliked Electric pitches are quite small. Fine when not fully booked but can imagine it gets squeezy in the summer!

Electric grass pitch

Liked Very helpful staff. Good size well maintained pitches. Variety of locations of toilets and showers. Only a 20 mins walk to the town recommended as parking isn't cheapest. Lovely food and not over priced. Big thank you to Liz and Martin who were very helpful and made us feel welcome especially when our van needed to be recovered from the site they didn't pressure us to move on and did all they can to accommodate and assist us and that made a bad situation much less stressful. Thank you and we will return when back on the road

Disliked Nothing. This site will keep getting better in my opinion

Electric grass pitch

Liked location was excellent. The night time views of swanage were breathtaking. Quiet site even though it was extremely busy as within the children's summer holidays. Ease of checking in. burger van on site for those not wanting to cook and this was open in a morning too. Showers were more than adequate with good pressure and heat of water. Local walks and paths to Corfe Castle.

Disliked closeness of other tents/campers within the grass pitches. Toilets did not appear to be cleaned very often and ran out of toilet paper on most nights which could have been due to how busy it was and the amount of children that were left to play in the facilities.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Great location. Walking distance ti Swanage sea front. Dece t camping fiend at the back.

Disliked The site, other than the rear two fields is a total mess. It looks like a nice site that has been abandoned. The permanent pitches are really scruffy, the old shop/ laundrette is a building site and photos of this in operation should be removed from the web as it is misleading. The toilets are pretty dirty and responsibility for cleaning is delegated to campers who have paid £50 per night to use the facilities. The cleaning materials are a filthy, half full bucket with stinking mop. Toilet paper ran out early in the day and wasn’t replaced until the following day. All loose had no paper. The staff are scruffy and so are the vehicles etc. it all feels grotty. The reception shed is messy and dirty too. I would not use this site again which is a shame, it could be great with a little effort as it is in a great location. I think that is why they are making zero effort, they don’t need to as it is in a great location but we won’t be back any time soon. Very poor value for money.

Local attractions

A five-minute drive gets you into Swanage for sandy walks, sandcastle building, splashing about and more serious watersports. To kayak round the cliffs and coves of the Jurassic Coast, make for Knoll beach (10 minutes' drive) or Lulworth Cove (40 minutes) to hire your craft and see the place from sea level. The 630 mile-long South West Coast Path passes through town: pick it up and head eastwards to the Studland and Godlingston Heath Nature Reserve to see the wild and nature-filled Wessex that inspired Thomas Hardy (or hire a steed from the trekking centre for extra historical detail). Going west, the path goes past the splendid sights of Stair Hole and Durdle Door (40 minutes), while descents of varying steepness lead down to quiet and cove-like beaches like Winspit (accessible only on foot from Worth Matravers, 10 minutes away) and Kimmeridge (half an hour). For a spot of time travel, pick up the Swanage Railway for a nine-mile steam trip to Wareham, perhaps stopping off en route for a clamber round the ruins of Corfe Castle (10 minutes). Younger visitors should have a ball among the play barns, pedal go-karts and pettable animals at Salt Pig the Farm - Putlake, five minutes away. Further afield, there are pony rides, deer safaris, tractor trips and bouncy castles at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (30 minutes), and at a similar distance the heavy hardware in The Tank Museum and the charming residents of Monkey World should keep everyone's monkeys out of mischief.
