The Gaggle of Geese: Garden and barbecue shack

General

  • Pub site over five acres in the village of Buckland Newton
  • Half an hour's drive from beaches and the Jurassic Coast
  • Homemade meals and local beers, plus barbecue and pizza oven in summer

Walkers, riders, fishing folk, dog owners, family groups… all will want to take a gander at The Gaggle of Geese, a friendly country pub in the little village of Buckland Newton.

This is a place that’s mighty well located for all sorts of Dorset days out – it’s in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for all your country pursuits, 20 minutes’ drive from the historic market town of Dorchester and half an hour from the county’s stunning coastline. On top of that, those on family hols may like to note that a drive of less that 45 minutes offers up all sorts of ways to entertain/wear out the small sorts – animal parks, fossil hunting, watersports…

It’s not all about location though – the pub’s a rather fine destination in its own right. Five fab acres of peaceful fields, an orchard and a pleasingly sizeable beer garden make up the outside space, while inside’s all comfy corners and a warm welcome for all (nippers and dogs included). Up for a bit more activity? Skip over to the skittle alley or check the events list to see if there are any quiz nights, wine tastings or live music afternoons scheduled.

And you’ll be needing eats and drinks of course... homemade pub classics can be washed down with local beers and ciders; summer nights often see action out at the barbecue shack and wood-fired pizza oven too. Barbecues and campfires are welcome if you’d rather go the DIY route.

Very quiet tucked away pub with awesome gardens and GOATS! Can feed them for free!
Very polite and friendly staff behind the bar, arrived on pizza oven night and they were to die for. My partner said that's been the best pizza she's ever eaten!
Resident dog is so sweet and you will get caught in a game of fetch the minute you throw 1 ball.
Relaxed about camp fires which is nice, a little pricey on the fire wood first 2 nights but 3rd night got a huge bag and was worth our money.
A normal range of pub food on the menu, which we didn't mind as we didn't have to walk far OR cook ourselves!

Toilets weren't perfect but a whole lot better than some! Unlike some camp sites it was a fully working flush loo with cute sink and toiletries provided. Didn't try out the showers but looked clean and would have been warm. Very cute idea to use a shepherds hut as the loo block, great idea!

Will definitely be staying again, we feel relax and rejuvenated which is exactly what a holiday should be

Site was a lovely. The added bonus came with the Pub being part of the site, with the option for take-out drinks. There is a double decker bus with soft play onsite open all hours for children to play in. Brilliant on a warm sunny day. Kids are entertained, and us adults can enjoy a drink or 2 or 3 ....

    Disliked:

Kitchen cleaning area is a little small, but adequate, the addition of a drainage area would go a long way.

A great location with an amazing pub providing great food and service. The owners were very helpful and helped sort an issue with our booking. A lovely welcome and friendly help on arrival about where to park / facilities available.

The space for camping was limited due to being half term and we had a slight problem finding somewhere relatively level to park our small van. We had to ask a couple of families to move some of their toys / large windbreak areas to allow us to squeeze between them. I don't think this would be a problem out of school holidays.

Plenty of interesting walks nearby and next time we will bring our bikesd as it's a great area for exploring on a cycle.

A new shower trailer was added to the facilities with 2 showers / toilets, however some cleaning equipment would be useful so people could clean up after themselves. However I did notice the owners busy late into the evening cleaning the facilities and emptying the recyvling bins, again it would be great if some poele could actually help by using these correctly ! Why you would place doig poo bags in the recycling is beyond me!

We will return again to enjoy the fab food, maybe include a Wedsnesday so we can try the pizzas.

    Disliked:

On occasion there were a few dogs roaming around and messing without owners with them.

Concerns over "casual" campers lighting fires within 1 meter of their tents ! It was very cramped due to school holidays but there should be some advice on how close to light a firepit to your tent / van.

Local attractions

Country wanderings aplenty await around here – there are heaps of places for walks both short and lengthy in the surrounding Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A popular ramble from the pub is the four-mile route to the Cerne Abbas Giant (indeed a sizeable chap at 55 metres long – potential pub quiz answer...?)

Horseback hacks can be had from several stables within half an hour, and there’s a fab coarse fishery with 10 lakes (10!) five minutes’ drive away. Want a bit more oomph in your outings? Head to Henley Hillbillies (five minutes’ drive) for days zooming about on quad bikes or in hovercrafts or souped-up Minis.

Need nipper-pleasing days out? Take your (or more likely their) pick from The Dinosaur Museum (20 minutes), Monkey World (half an hour), the Tank Museum (half an hour), the Sea Life adventure park (40 minutes), Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (40 minutes)… or head to the coast for beach days in Weymouth (40 minutes), watersports at Lulworth Cove (45 minutes) or fossil hunts in Kimmeridge (50 minutes).
