  • Pub site over five acres in the village of Buckland Newton
  • Half an hour's drive from beaches and the Jurassic Coast
  • Homemade meals and local beers, plus barbecue and pizza oven in summer
Walkers, riders, fishing folk, dog owners, family groups… all will want to take a gander at The Gaggle of Geese, a friendly country pub in the little village of Buckland Newton. This is a place that’s mighty well located for all sorts of Dorset days out – it’s in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for all your country pursuits, 20 minutes’ drive from the historic market town of Dorchester and half an hour from the county’s stunning coastline. On top of that, those on family hols may like to note that a drive of less that 45 minutes offers up all sorts of ways to entertain/wear out the small sorts – animal parks, fossil hunting, watersports… It’s not all about location though – the pub’s a rather fine destination in its own right. Five fab acres of peaceful fields, an orchard and a pleasingly sizeable beer garden with a soft play double decker bus, ping pong shack, miniature golf, pygmy goats and a space for football make up the outside space. The inside’s all comfy corners and a warm welcome for all (nippers and dogs included) too. Up for a bit more activity? Skip over to the skittle alley or check the events list to see if there are any quiz nights, wine tastings or live music afternoons scheduled. And you’ll be needing eats and drinks of course... homemade pub classics can be washed down with local beers and ciders; summer nights often see action out at the barbecue shack and wood-fired pizza oven too. Barbecues and campfires are welcome if you’d rather go the DIY route.

Birdie shepherd's hut (two person)

Liked: Amazing stay in Birdie Shepherd Hut. Comfy clean furnishings. Hot, high pressure shower. Plenty of heat pumped out from bathroom radiator and log burner warmed up the hut in no time at all. Well insulated hut which stayed warm all night - much needed in rainy October! Welcome pack of Prosecco, bread, butter, local honey & delicious homemade biscuits was very well received. Very thoughtful touches throughout. Food at Gaggle of Geese was delicious and generous portion sizes. Recommend visiting Cerne Abbas Giant, Abbey, Church & Wishing Well all worth visiting. Great food at New Inn pub in Cerne Abbas. Dorchester also worth a trip and the Thomas Hardy historical points. Monkey World was good to see Urangutans & Gorillas but the park was badly signposted and a few species including the Lemurs and Slow Loris were not available when we visited.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Great quiet little site. Good food at the pub, very friendly.

Disliked: A very minor thing, but you could turn the PIR sensors on the toilet/shower lights to allow a bit more time before they turn off... It would save a lot of waving about in the dark when having a shower :)

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: This was a lovely campsite - beautiful grounds and facilities. Options for glamping of various forms. Run by the pub owners who were really friendly. Lots of interesting things to do - pitch & putt, kids play area in an old bus, goats, ice cream parlour, pizza, pub food and of course, good beer & cider. Free WiFi in the pub. A really relaxing and peaceful spot - will definitely return.

Disliked: Needs toilet brushes but that’s a very minor issue

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Pitch where you like. We stayed out of high season so the site was exceptionally quiet, the one shower available and toilets were clean. Good base for exploring surrounding area, fab walks direct from the site.

Disliked: An elsan point would have been a bonus. Shame the pub wasn't open on the 2 out of 3 days we stayed.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Great pub, amazing food, chilled vibe, play bus, farm animals, remote location. Clean campsite, undercover washing up area with hot water, plug sockets to charge phones and plug in coolboxes.

Disliked: Showers were stone cold, toilets were a bit grubby at times but they were cleaned regularly.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Location at the field in the back of the beer garden. Quiet location (apart from a young child who clearly did not like life under a canvas!).but unique toilets, shower and sinks in converted horse box and little hut. Hot showers and power points and good washing up facilities too. Whilst the pub is not open every day, it was nice to eat and drink there one night. Easy access to lots of lovely Dorset and Somerset locations.

Local attractions

Country wanderings aplenty await around here – there are heaps of places for walks both short and lengthy in the surrounding Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A popular ramble from the pub is the four-mile route to the Cerne Abbas Giant (indeed a sizeable chap at 55 metres long – potential pub quiz answer...?) Horseback hacks can be had from several stables within half an hour, and there’s a fab coarse fishery with 10 lakes (10!) five minutes’ drive away. Want a bit more oomph in your outings? Head to Henley Hillbillies (five minutes’ drive) for days zooming about on quad bikes or in hovercrafts or souped-up Minis. Need nipper-pleasing days out? Take your (or more likely their) pick from The Dinosaur Museum (20 minutes), Monkey World (half an hour), the Tank Museum (half an hour), the Sea Life adventure park (40 minutes), Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (40 minutes)… or head to the coast for beach days in Weymouth (40 minutes), watersports at Lulworth Cove (45 minutes) or fossil hunts in Kimmeridge (50 minutes).
