  • Stylish shepherd’s hut in a secluded valley near Bridport in Dorset
  • A 20-minute drive to West Bay beach, and 35 minutes to Lyme Regis
  • Horses, goats and sheep on site; food pubs five minutes’ stroll
A bespoke shepherd’s hut handmade in oak, The Warren at Rabbit Catchers Retreat sits on the side of a gentle valley near Bridport in Dorset. A romantic choice for an adults-only break (well OK… the dog can come too), it’s tucked away on a smallholding of 18 acres, with lots of ponies and horses grazing in nearby fields. Your only other neighbours will be free-range sheep and the cute pygmy goats in the paddock by the main gates. Your luxury glamping accommodation comes complete with a nattily equipped kitchenette, a comfy double bed and a dining area with two cosy armchairs to curl up in. A bathroom with a walk-in shower, wash basin and flushing WC completes the indoor spec of this peaceful retreat. And what of the outside area? Double doors open up on to valley views, and on clear days, you can sit in sunlight to linger over breakfast, lunch or dinner to a backdrop of birdsong. Come the evening, snuggle up on the wooden swing seat or around the firepit to stay toasty warm as you gaze up at the night sky – often accompanied by the hooting of owls. Pick up supplies from the handy supermarkets in Bridport (15 minutes’ drive), or if you fancy a date night, there are foodie pubs in Nettlecombe and Powerstock (both 10 minutes’ walk, leave the car behind and make a night of it).

Local attractions

You can explore the mysterious Iron Age Eggardon Hill Fort (40 minutes’ walk) on foot, and be rewarded with spectacular views across Dorset hills. Powerstock Common Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) offers easy rambles along a former railway line, and slightly more strenuous routes up Gerrard’s Hill (25 minutes) turn up panoramas to picture-perfect villages and wooded valleys. Head for the lively Dorset town of Bridport (15 minutes’ drive) to have a rummage around its twice-weekly street market for forgotten treasures, or check out some of the galleries and indie shops. There’s a lively gourmet scene too, and you can book vineyard tours and tastings at Furleigh Estate (20 minutes) or sample craft beers at Palmers Brewery (15 minutes). Bridport is also gateway to the sandy stretches of West Bay (20 minutes, great for a summer swim) and the dramatic Jurassic Coast, where you can join the South West Coast Path for long-distance hikes. If that sounds too energetic, take soulful strolls along Victoria Pier at Lyme Regis (35 minutes) or search for ammonites along the shingle beach at Charmouth (half an hour).

The Warren shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a really special couple of days celebrating a birthday and seeing in the new year. The shepherds hut had everything we needed and the birthday balloons and bunting was a lovely touch! Also the basket of local treats. We enjoyed our evenings in the hot tub then going back into the cosy hut. Perfect! Nat and Mat were the perfect hosts along with the menagerie of friendly animals. We will definitely be returning.

From the manager: Dear Ann, We are so pleased you, Howard & Taffy had a lovely stay here! You were the perfect guests. The hut was left spotless, no sign of a dog staying! Thank you and we can’t wait to see you all again.
