  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with an orchard, tyre swing and garden toys
Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got seven acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…) That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores. The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to an orchard and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings). Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field. Mobile phone and device charging is available for a small fee. Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: We could purchase firewood for £5 and the use of a repurposed drum from a washing appliance as a fire pit was free of charge with the purchase of wood. Shower perfect temperature, but best of all was the warm welcome from April and Hannah and their helpfulness. A lovely peaceful site, will definitely stay again.

Bell tent

Liked: We went as a group of friends with our young children and absolutely loved the complimentary marshmallows and the tyre swing! The little play area was really lovely and the children had a lot of fun. The provision of the fire pits was fab as well - a camp fire always makes it extra special. It was also helpful having a food van on site, especially for a short stay.

Disliked: The bell tents were near a road with lights along it, which meant they were lit up at night. I would also have loved a compost loo on each field - being pregnant and with small children, being very near a loo at night is helpful!

From the manager: Thank you very much for your lovely review. It was great to see your young children enjoying themselves in the open air. Thank you for mentioning the lights. When we know there is a problem we can make changes, so this feedback is really helpful. We hope to plant a hedge along that fence to screen the lights.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: When we were looking for campsites for a family friendly holiday this year we stumbled across Pilsdon view and figured all the positive reviews already received had to be right…and they definitely were!
From the moment we arrived we were met with a friendly welcoming host, we were able to pick where to pitch that would suit us and then given a lovely welcoming gift which were very much enjoyed!
The campsite pitches were large, meaning we had plenty of space from other campers ensuring peace and privacy in the evenings. The campsite itself was immaculate, the toilets were consistently clean and well stocked and were always available when required.
The owners on site were friendly and attentive without ever feeling intrusive. The play facilities on site were much appreciated by our children - and us as parents knowing our children had the freedom and space to explore and play safely.
The area itself is beautiful and relaxing - we enjoyed some wonderful clear skies and saw our first shooting stars which made our holiday extra special.
Thank you for providing a wonderful campsite that gave us a memorable holiday - we will definitely be back! 😊

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself. Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum). In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour. Away from the coast, Axe Valley Wildlife Park and Mapperton House and Gardens are both within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.
