Pilsdon View Camping: Five-metre yurt

General

  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with wildflower meadow, tyre swing and garden toys

Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got four acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…)

That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores.

The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to a wildflower meadow and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings).

Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field.

Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campsite/holiday park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, 31/08/2021.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Unclear if there was WiFi (I never used it ) so I did not give a rating. There was some phone reception so slightly irrelevant.

Many thanks for for visit and review. It’s true we don’t have WiFi, but I manage to run the campsite office just on data so we are happy to provide a digital detox😂

A really nice and friendly campsite, well layered out and lots for kids to do, they even had a small kitchen serving coffees in the morning and bake potatoes or pizzas in the evening.
    I’d go there Again definitely.

    Disliked:

The only drawback was the narrow road that you need to go down to get to it, I had a motorhome with a trailer and it was a bit worrying, but hey, I made it without too much trouble!

friendly welcome off owners on arrival after a disastrous sat nav experience that took us through country lanes for about 30 miles, we could choose where we pitched our tent and opted for down by the stream on bottom field which was awesome. there are clean toilets and showers available which are maintained regularly and also fresh cooked food on site every day if you cant be bothered to cook yourself, the coast is not to far away depending on where you want to go, we did Lyme Regis, west bay and Weymouth and there's a market in bridport on Wednesdays where they have a Weatherspoon's where the beer is half the price of anywhere else.
arrived on a Friday and just managed to get the tent up before a storm rolled in but the lightning show made it all worth while. it really was an amazing week and will definitely book again. oh yeah, you can buy a bag of logs for £5 on site and the owners provide you with a burner for them, i put a metal grid on top and barbecued sausages and all sorts on top so you wont need to bring a barby with you just some mesh. if you got kids there's a tyre swing they can mess about with or go where we were if you want peace and quiet. its a really nice place you wont be disappointed, cant wait to go back.

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself.

Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum).

In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour.

Away from the coast, Axe Valley Wildlife Park and Mapperton House and Gardens are both within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.

Must see

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (4.8 miles)
  • Abbotsbury Swannery (12.3 miles)
  • Montacute House (12.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Loughwood Meeting House (10.8 miles)
  • Shute Barton (10.9 miles)
