  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with an orchard, tyre swing and garden toys
Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got seven acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…) That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores. The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to an orchard and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings). Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field. Mobile phone and device charging is available for a small fee. Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Loved this place SO much. It's very country cottage core and pretty. Fabulous for families! The tyre rope swing on a gorgeous old oak tree was so cool! There is also a runner bean wigwam to hide in and toys near reception to play with (for the kids). Be careful on the unicycle, lol. April, Terry and the other blonde chap who dish out the fire pits are so lovely, welcoming and friendly. There is a dog exercise area which is enclosed and out of they way, the only one thing I would comment is some dogs could possibly jump the fence as it is only around 3ft roughly. It completely depends on your dogs agility. The shower 'shed' in the middle of the main field has a stunning rose growing up the side of it. The showers themselves are fab, free to use as and when you wish (no 50p top up fee) and it's a big rainfall showerhead. Toilets are great, lights are on during the night which is a bonus so you can see where you are heading. Its £6 for a big bag of firewood, the firepit, wood and paving slab are delivered to your tent. April has a card reader on hand if you have no cash. The food van (Jurrasic Pork 😆) is fantastic! The food is delicious. They have a good selection on the menu and are really friendly. The setting is beautiful. We will definitely be returning here next time we are down in Dorset.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Great open campsite. Owners very affable and friendly. Ground rules suited us very well; campsite was serene and peaceful with the occasional sound of children having fun. A family atmosphere with bikes for children to borrow and a tyre swing for them to use. An acceptable on-site refreshment van selling breakfasts burgers and drinks great for those times when we didn't cook ourselves and open in the evening as well.
Toilets clean, showers excellent and fire pits available to use.
Although no wifi there was a good 4G internet connection.
All in all we had a fantastic break; of course the weather helped!

Disliked Would have liked good quality wifi but hey you can't have it all!

Bell tent

Liked Wonderful quiet, friendly site! The addition of the food van on site was a lovely touch, and was well priced.
We only had a short stay this time as it was a fairly spontaneous booking, but already looking forward to coming back!
The bell tent was neat, tidy and well maintained.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Loved this site, read lots of comments about the owners Terry and April and they are true great hosts, a lovely welcome and a simple but well maintained site. A perfect place to chill with friends a night.

Having food truck on site was a real bonus, the pork and apple burger was lovely.

We enjoyed the fire pit and really convenient being able to buy wood on onsite. We also visited Furleigh Estate Vineyard which was less than 10 mins drive from site - really lovely setting and tried some delicious wines for £10.00

Clean facilities (decent showers which is always a plus to me), attentive owners, simple set up and beautiful scenery - what's not too like :-)

Disliked Nothing

From the manager: Thank you so much for your visit and for taking the time to write this lovely review. Jurassic Pork is a great partner for us, and I agree, the park and apple burger is delicious.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Very clean and spacious. Warm welcome on arrival. Facilities were clean and showers warm. The food truck was a lovely perk and staff were really sweet with our one year old. Campsite was generally quiet from about 9pm.

From the manager: Many thanks for your visit and for taking the time to write this lovely review for us. It’s so great to see little ones getting fresh air and freedom, and their enthusiasm for the tractor is great.

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself. Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum). In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour. Away from the coast, Mapperton House and Gardens is within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.
