  • Working farm site with a coarse fishing lake in a Dorset valley
  • Under 15 minutes’ drive from three beaches; 20 minutes from Charmouth
  • Firepits to hire; walk to pubs and shops; fishing included in the stay
No need to wish upon a shooting star for a Dorset getaway with a fishing lake on site and Jurassic Coast Beaches a short drive away – it’s right here at Mangerton Lake. Overlooking the Mangerton valley coarse fishing lake, the working farm site has valley and lake views you’ll have a hard time forgetting (not to mention the lovely sounds of the spring bubbling and fish jumping). The farm is in one of Dorset’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so hikers can make good use of the country footpaths accessible directly from the site. Anglers are likely to be just as cheerful, as fishing is included in the stay and the lake is well-stocked with carp, roach and tench. A keen explorer at heart? Then, you’ll be in your element. The Jurassic Coast is within striking distance – three of its beaches are under 15 minutes’ drive away, including Hive Beach in Burton Bradstock, West Bay and Eype beach. Charmouth, one of many famed local fossil hunting spots, is 20 minutes’ drive away. And what about getting a taste of the lush Dorset produce? Two pubs are within 15 minutes’ walk of Mangerton Lake. There are some fab restaurants, cafés and pubs around this area – you’ll soon be raving about them after a visit to the historic market town of Bridport, five minutes’ drive away. Its antique shops and vintage markets are popular too, and rightly so. When you get back to the site, stop by the wash hut, which has shared toilets, showers and a washing-up room. As the sun dips down, you may want to hire a firepit from the site for a small fee, along with logs and charcoal.

Local attractions

No doubt some of you will be itching to rummage for fossils along the Jurassic Coast. If you’re new to the game, there’s a heritage centre in Charmouth (20 minutes’ drive) which will happily host you a fossil hunting walk or expedition. Charmouth beach is a good starting point before heading onto Lyme Regis (25 minutes). Charmouth and Lyme Regis are dreamy spots for walks too, whether it’s a stroll over the coastal path or around the clifftop Golden Cap (15 minutes) estate. Anglers can switch up the on-site lake for a spot of sea fishing in Lyme Bay too. You’re likely to catch sight of plenty of Dorset wildlife on your wanderings, but if you’re looking for something a little more interactive for the kids, Axe Valley Wildlife Park (half an hour) runs animal handling sessions with its small, furry creatures.
