  • Grass pitches on a cider apple farm with spectacular West Dorset views
  • A 10-minute drive to Bridport; 15 minutes from West Bay beach
  • 190 acres of farmland to explore on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk away
Close to West Bay beach, the market town of Bridport and historic Beaminster, the pitches at Hincknowle Cider Apple Farm Camping are scattered over 190 acres of undulating farmland, ponds, orchards and woodland – and that means a whole lot of exceptional views over West Dorset and the Jurassic Coast. The farm is home to many deer, badgers, foxes and various birds of prey – and as you’re free to roam, look out for buzzards, kestrels and owls. There is also livestock around: pigs, sheep and alpacas live here, so although well-behaved dogs are welcome, they must be kept on a lead. Limiting the number of large mowed pitches means you have plenty of space and privacy on the site. They're off grid with little light so you can really appreciate the starry skies on clear nights (please that also means you'll need to bring torches for after-dark meanders). A boon for days when the weather isn’t up to much, the restored barn has communal cooking gear along with a shared fridge to store food. Light the woodburner on cooler evenings, hang out with family and friends, play board games or table tennis… there are phone chargers in there too. Other amenities on site include outdoor showers with plenty of hot water and spotless separate toilets. There is a pub in Melplash, 10 minutes’ walk away through the private orchards, and several footpaths begin from the village.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: We were looking for a place to escape the world, to find peace and quiet, and just breathe. This place was perfect. The shared barn and kitchen was a lovely extra touch. Clean toilets. Well spaced out pitches so you don't feel on top of each other. Good food in the nearby pub with a lovely walk across the fields to get there. Loved every minute and didn't want to leave.

Disliked: Arrival was a little uncomfortable as no signs at the main house to tell you where to find the owner to check in. Then was told to follow them into the field to the pitches but without our campervan. Having read online that cars were not allowed on pitches, I panicked that I'd booked us a tent only Campsite and driven 3 hours to then not be able to stay! Turned out it was so we could be shown the pitches and choose one in advance of driving up (very nice to have the option) but this wasn't explained until I questioned it. A little explanation on greeting would have helped.

From the manager: Hi Jemma. So sorry you found it hard to find us. We do send all our bookings an email with detailed instructions on how to find us and how to make contact with us upon arrival! Those who read the confirmation email find us generally without complications. Campervans are naturally allowed on pitches- with tents we recommend the designated car park couple of minutes walk away in prefer to keep the wild feel of the site.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Beautiful quiet location, plenty of space between the flat pitches. Spotlessly clean facilities and the barn kitchen was a godsend on a stormy evening. Matt the host was very friendly and welcoming. Beautiful walks about the farm.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing to dislike.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Brilliantly spaced plots- it's a pet hate of mine to camp in long grass, so I was super happy that paths were mown allowing good access, and well spaced out campers. Wild, but not too wild! A very friendly welcome and really clean facilities. Super communal areas, which were great for making meal times easier, and playing games, and meeting others. All in all, we had a really great stay, thank you Matt & Hincknowle Cider Apple farm.

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Amazing campsite, pitches are a really good size and spread out so very peaceful and secluded. They are first-come-first-served and we got #9 which was the furthest from facilities, but had awesome views over the valley. Owners are lovely and always looking to help, they recommended a walk around the land which was great, the kids got tired towards the end but it was well worth it. Facilities are great and regularly cleaned by the hardworking owners! We didn't need to use the barn much (as weather was great!), but it's a good option and the power-points and fridge came in very useful. Good location with nice towns, beaches, pubs etc nearby, but we enjoyed just being on site. No wifi and little mobile signal - so a great place to switch off! Already looking forward to returning next year

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

If you’re camping with kids, chances are they’ll be keen to get to the beach. Indulge them with a day out at West Bay (15 minutes’ drive), where you can all go fishing, rookpooling and crabbing, or make like Kate Winslet and head to Charmouth (half an hour) to rootle around on the beach for fossils. Dog-friendly Hive Beach (20 minutes) is a clever option for long walks with your furry friends under the shelter of limestone cliffs. The South West Coast Path (15 minutes) passes through the area if you fancy more challenging all-day hikes with impressive sea and sand views from soaring clifftops. The trail heads past lively Bridport (10 minutes); stop there a while to check out its antiques shops or take a high-speed RIB cruise to see the Jurassic Coast from the water. Firmly back on land, take the kids to feed donkeys and wallabies at Vurlands Animal Farm (20 minutes), or spend the day getting up close to the Mute swan colony at Abbotsbury Swannery (35 minutes).
