  • Working family farm and wildlife haven next door to Wareham Forest
  • A five-minute drive from Bere Regis and 25 to the Jurassic Coast
  • Lots of animals on site and walks in woodland right from the grounds
Fond of relaxed hols blending seaside and rural times? Then flock to Philliols Farm for a secluded stay among the chickens and cockerel – not to mention the cattle, sheep, lambs and horses – on a working farm around a 25-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast. Not that famed beaches like Lulworth Cove are the only attraction when bedding down here: the park is right next door to Wareham Forest for walks in woodland and the wanders are said to be top-notch whichever direction you decide to dawdle in. Cycling is also possible on local paths, including the 11-kilometre Sika Trail, and there are bucketloads of nature reserves for birdwatching too (try Holton Heath, Morden Bog or Hartland Moor, all within 20 minutes). And what does one do for dinner hereabouts? Well, the park is also around a five-minute drive from Bere Regis for a pub and a well-stocked shop; if it's just a pint you're after you can source one closer by at the golf/country club 25 minutes' walk away. . If you decide the seaside is where you’d rather be, it’s handy to know that Poole’s harbour and Durdle Door’s beach are within 25 minutes’ drive. The long, sandy stretches of coastline around Bournemouth, meanwhile, take about 35 minutes to reach.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Level ground, lots of space, unmarked, unlimited pitch size. Remote and peaceful. Friendly owner. Shower works very well.

Disliked: Toilets are flushed with sewage waste which is pungent and dangerous and there is no plan to change this. Shower cabin is in bad condition particularly the shower tray hence plenty of scope for harbouring bacteria etc. I'm not fussy regarding camping facilities but have to give this 1 star due to health and safety reasons even though the field and location is great.

From the manager: We are soory to read your comments but the toilets are not flushed with sewage waste, they are connected to mains water. If there was a temporary problem was it brought to attention to rectify? This is a temporary site so toilets/showers also have to be temporary, the other option being portaloos, which are found to be less satisfactory as no running water for handwashing.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Found the site with toilets and showers but there was nobody else there just an empty field so moved on and found another site

Disliked: As a lone female I didn't feel safe on my own in the field

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: So sorry that you felt alone. As a temporary site, we can't be in the field 24 hours a day. However, it is adjacent to the farmhouse so there is someone there throughout the night, we were probably out working. As we are temporary, we open and close, and you may have been the first arrival on a new opening day. The weather is dreadful at present, so there are fewer visitors at present everywhere and all the local camp sites are quieter.than usual. Hope that you enjoyed the area, wherever you stayed. Philliols.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely location in a quiet, flat field, lovely friendly owner. Plenty of space. Nice porta cabin toilets, well kept with hot water & soap - we saw the lady in and out 2 or 3 times in the evening cleaning/mopping them round. Waste disposal & water taps.

Disliked: Showers were OK, in a porta cabin but cold water & no light. To be fair this is our first camping holiday, so have nothing to compare with expectation-wise.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, thank you for your comments and glad that you liked the area. Sorry that the showers seem to have been cold when you used them, as it is a pop up site, we are only able to have temporary facilities. I can only think that the gas must have run out when you used the showers and that no one had told us, as the bottle does have to be manually changed when it is empty. No light - we provide battery lights and torches but these do get removed by visitors, so this must have been the case when you visited.

Route directions

Do not follow satnav from Bere Regis as it's likely to take you on an impassable lane. Follow signs to Wool/Bovington for around three miles and then take the road to Wareham on the left. Take the first left (towards Dorset Golf and Country Club) and it's about a mile and a half from there.

Local attractions

Wander around the 1,000-year-old Corfe Castle in the Purbeck Hills (20 minutes’ drive) during your break, making sure to factor in a little time for wild swimming at the Blue Pool when you’re not exploring the fab Jurassic Coast beaches of Lulworth Cove, Studland, Swanage, Man O’War and Durdle Door (all within half an hour). Seeking sightseeing spots for the kids? Monkey World ape rescue centre is fantastic for families (10 minutes), while littler members of your group are guaranteed to love the indoor and outdoor play areas at Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (15 minutes). There are also woodland trails to toddle along and a maze – made out of maize – to navigate. If town times appeal, Wareham is where it’s at. Walk the walls surrounding this old Saxon settlement before visiting St Lawrence of Arabia’s effigy in St Martin’s Church and roaming along the River Frome. Don’t forget Dorchester either for curiosities including the Dinosaur Museum, Tutankhamun Exhibition and Maiden Castle (25 minutes).
