  • Spacious family-friendly pitches on a 25-acre wild meadow
  • A 20-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast; 10 minutes from Wareham
  • Wildlife haven close to fishing spots on the river Piddle
Now here’s a place that’s really able to call itself a wildlife haven: Hyde Camping is a spacious Dorset site in a 25-acre hay and wildflower meadow that’s been unsprayed for more than 20 years. In fact the whole estate it belongs to is dedicated to preserving and rewilding native habitats, so wildlife of all sorts is able to thrive here. Badgers, hedgehogs, deer, foxes, owls and otters can sometimes be spotted around the wooded area next to the pitches, and salmon and trout are plentiful in the river Piddle, close to the campsite. Pitches here are large, well-drained and flat, with acres of land but only small numbers of guests on site at any one time. That means, as well as a proper sense of seclusion, there's heaps of space for the kids to run around while the grownups tend the barbecue or start a campfire (logs and kindling are available to buy on site, and firepits are available to hire). Compost loos are on site too and guests have access to a small amount of fridge/freezer space (for whatever bits you pick up at the shops in Wareham or Bere Regis, both 10 minutes’ drive away). As well as the many plus points of the site itself, this central Dorset location is also a handy one for getting out and about to explore the county’s many attractions. The beaches of the Jurassic Coast are about 20 minutes’ drive away, and the popular Monkey World and Tank Museum are five minutes away.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beth the host was lovely and was so accommodating. Even lending us a bar b que one evening so we could cook. The site is basic but you have clean toilets and water on site. The bird song is lovely and it's a nice quiet peaceful site.

Disliked: The price of the logs was a bit dear but they were large logs and burnt very well. The wi fi wasn't great but we managed.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Really quiet. Huge field with camping around the edge...so lots of space. Clean toilets. Good communication and directions from owners.

Disliked: It was a bit expensive considering the lack of facilities, but many of the campsites round the area charge similar.

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to leave the review. So pleased you enjoyed the peace and quiet. Beth

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: 1. The Space: Absolutely massive field, loads of space, limited numbers so doesn't feel crowded 2. Toilets: Compost toilets spread across the site 3. Location: Simple to find with the emailed directions, absolute silence at night apart from the wildlife, minimal light pollution, easy walking access direct to Wareham forest with miles of trails to explore 4. Firepits: Reasonably priced hire of firepits and purchase of logs delivered direct to your pitch 5. Owners: Friendly owners who come round daily to check everything is OK (and their dog became quick friends with ours)

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Quiet, low impact, nature, wildlife. There was plenty of space, huge field with pitches in select mowed areas. Most of the field is left to grow as a meadow with many wildflowers and butterflies. It was quiet, couldn't hear traffic at night, just the nightjar chirring at dusk and the bird morning chorus. Only facilities are two water taps and multiple compositing toilets (bring own paper). As close to wild camping as you can get but with the important facilities and no chance of being asked to move on (as long as you have paid !) Friendly and helpful owners. It's within walking distance of nature reserves including the Morden Bog (ten mile round trip).

Disliked: Difficult to find the water taps. A sketch-map at the entrance would have been useful.

Local attractions

Where to start with the attractions around here? Perhaps it’s best to get your bearings by heading out on foot to stretch your legs on the walking and bike trails of Wareham Forest or the paths of Clouds Hill National Trust estate (both five minutes’ drive). Alternatively perhaps you’d like to see the scenery from above on a flight from Dorset Gliding Club (five minutes), or sit back and relax while riding on the Swanage Railway (15 minutes)? Sticking with the outdoor activities, a golf course and clay pigeon shooting are both five minutes’ drive away, and there are plenty of watersports options down at Lulworth Cove (20 minutes), including canoe or paddleboard trips around Durdle Door. For other days out, the highly kid-friendly attractions of Monkey World (five minutes) and The Tank Museum (10 minutes) are usually good bets for a family day out, as is the chance to scramble about playing at being a knight at Corfe Castle (15 minutes). For something a little more sedate, try Sculpture By The Lakes (10 minutes).
