  • Quiet wild campsite in the village of Widecombe in the Moor
  • Five minutes' drive to Haytor Rocks; 15 minutes to Bovey Tracey
  • Central Dartmoor location on the banks of the river Webburn
There are heaps of great walks and other outdoor activities around Dartmoor National Park, and setting up camp at a central spot like Widecombe Valley – Dartmoor Camping means it should be nice and easy to get out to as many of them as you like… This is a very quiet little wild campsite tucked away just on the edge of the village of Widecombe in the Moor, about 25 minutes’ drive from Newton Abbot. There are lots of great footpaths to explore nearby, and it makes a handy stopover for folk backpacking or walking their way across the national park. It’s a simple and laidback setup here, with composting toilets provided, dogs welcome and barbecues and campfires both permitted. There are no showers on site, but there’s something even better: at the end of a long day of walking, you can instead take a refreshing dip in the fresh water of the river Webburn, which flows past the site. Look out from this Devon site and you’ll mainly see farmland and Dartmoor’s tors (which you’ll have easy access to from here), but it’s not entirely rural: you can walk to the village in about five minutes for a café, shop and pub.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (seven person)

Liked: Basic campsite but that's what we wanted in such a beautiful setting. The owners were very accommodating and helpful via text before we stayed. The toilets were as described, composting. Campfires allowed and wood very well priced even if it is damp. Views are amazing and it feels very peaceful by the river, well when it's quiet..

Disliked: Didn't like the incessant barking from the dogs on the farm. It was day and night, day being not so much of a problem but come night time it really ruined the chance of getting any sleep. After the first night I thought surely it was a fluke and would be sorted and the second would be better but no. If you feel like loud barking all night might affect your sleep, maybe this site isn't for you. The toilets are also a challenge due to the smell. I've been to a few sites with composting but I really struggled here, this could of been down to other campers staying at the the time though I'm not sure.

From the manager: Hi Marie, thank you for your review. I am glad you liked the location of our site. I try and ensure it is kept clean and pitches are looking good. A couple of points you made that confuses me a little. The wood we supply is very well seasoned and stored in rubble sacks in a log store. I think that maybe the dampness you mention was from the frequent rain we had during your stay when wood is left beside tents to get wet on the outside. I apologise for the noise of dogs barking, we are surrounded by farms and dog owners at the site which certainly could affect noise levels although you are the first to mention this in a review. The composting toilets do have more of an odour than traditional flushing toilets but for us the environmental benefits of using them outway the occasional smells you may experience. You have stated that you would not visit us again which is great shame as many people have visited us year on year since we started. Maybe our site is not suited to all walks of life.

Will be back!

From the manager: Hi Anonymous.. thank you for your review and your positive feedback. Glad you like the composting toilet set up... something a bit different isn't it! Sorry I did not get to meet you... I think I was there when you were out and about somewhere. It is very much a case of help yourself type campsite if you are already booked in. My aim is to ensure everyone has a peaceful stay with minimal disturbance. Thank you, Dan

Non-electric grass tent pitch (three person)

Liked: Beautiful location, peaceful site with a stunning view up onto the moor. We pitched by the stream which added its own sound track to the evenings round the fire pit. This site is perfect for those wanting to almost wild camp. The local pub is a short stroll down the valley, lovely food and some local cyders worth a taste. Unfortunately we never got to meet the owner(maybe we will on our next visit) due to our long days out on the moor taking in the stunning vistas. We will definitely be back highly recommend this site felt very relaxed. The lack of phone signal was a godsend.

From the manager: Thank you Mark for you positive feedback. I am happy you enjoyed your stay. Sorry I did not get to meet you. I try and catch up with as many people as I can but often miss them in the day when i come to do the toilets and cut grass. Please visit us again. Regards, Dan

Liked: Lovely little campsite. Nice and quiet with a beautiful little stream running through it. Composting toilets were nice and clean.

Disliked: Would have been good to have a shower if we were staying longer. But it was fine for 3 nights.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (three person)

Liked: Beautiful, natural, informal feel to the site. Widdecombe is a great location, and Rugglestone Inn is very close and a "proper" pub to visit. The pitches aren't squished together, and the view of the tor behind the site is pretty special, too.

Disliked: After a long walk on the Moor, it would be nice to have a hot shower, but we knew there weren't any before we booked, and the price also reflected this.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you John for you positive feedback. I am happy you enjoyed your stay. I am glad you noticed the spacing on the pitches, I try and ensure people have some space between them for privacy. It's nice to have your own little crop circle area isn't it. Regards, Dan

Non-electric grass tent pitch (five person)

Liked: As there was a break in the wet weather we decided to pop up to the Moors for one night for some camping fun. This site was perfect for us, small but perfectly formed. The people were friendly and respectful and the facilities catered to our needs. The campsite was clean and tidy with good access to Widdecombe and Bonehill rocks. Old School camping at its best in a great location. Thoroughly recommended.

From the manager: Hi Ben, thank you for your positive comments about your stay at Widecombe Valley campsite. We are very lucky with our location for accessing the local tors and walking routes. Please come and stay with us again. Regards, Dan

I appreciate your positive comments about the composting toilets... not to everyones liking I realise but some people appreciate them for what they are.
