  • Peaceful dog-friendly site in south Devon, two miles from the beach
  • A 10-minute drive to Slapton Sands and 30 minutes to Dartmouth
  • Sea views; pubs, farm shops and brewery within 10 minutes' drive
Where better to watch the sky’s daily evening light show than from a tent in the peaceful south Devon countryside? Perhaps your idea of the perfect sunset is with a local Devonshire ale in hand… or maybe it’s the brief joy of seeing your kids sit still to gawp at the swirling sky. Among sloping farmland on the edge of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Pollard’s Combe is a no-frills site in a web of countryside ambles, where your dog can tag along too. This is a refuge in nature, away from the crowds, but still within easy reach of Dartmouth’s fortress, steam railway, and a host of watersports (sea kayaking and paddleboarding, anyone?) The well-maintained grassy pitches make for comfy living, with access to portable toilets, and are 10 minutes’ drive from the ocean froth of Slapton Sands and the boardwalks of Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. As you’d expect from a rural retreat, there are several farm shops with dairy ripe from the farm, village shops, and pubs within a five-minute drive. One of the shops has its very own brewery, so you can get the insider’s scoop and first dibs on Devon's top ales before anyone else. If you want it straight from the horse's mouth, head to one of the traditional inns within a 10-minute drive for seafood specialities and cask ale. Make sure you arrive back at the site in time for sunset though, because the distant sea views and a pick of local takeaway pizzas make for splendid viewing.

Local attractions

Peer out from the turrets of Dartmouth Castle (25 minutes' drive) and pretend you’re a 14th-century sentry guarding the River Dart, before venturing into the town of Dartmouth itself (25 minutes). Here, you can catch the vintage steam railway (kids can pretend to hoot at passers-by), cast your rod at the beach, or paddle further out in a sea kayak and keep your eyes peeled for passing seals or dolphins. Closer to home, you might want to pick your way across the shingle beach at Slapton Sands (10 minutes), before putting on your inspector’s hat to search for otters and starlings at Slapton Ley Nature Reserve (10 minutes), where woodland, marshes, and the lakewater are ripe breeding grounds for a whole host of unusual wildlife. The sheltered coves of Mill Bay (30 minutes) will take you away from the tourist crowds of Darmouth – hire a sailing dinghy here and navigate your way around the different coves. You can also sail right into Salcombe (30 minutes) to stop by the gin distillery or grab a traditional Salcombe mud ice cream for the kids.
