  • Cosy, insulated camping pod on an exclusive-use farm near Princetown
  • Central Dartmoor location close to walks, horse riding and fishing
  • Picnic table and firepit provided, with wood to buy on site
Out for Dartmoor rambles? Bed down in a cosy camping pod at Beardown Farm, a Devon working hill farm in a central location within the Dartmoor National Park. Settling down in a camping pod is a fine way to make sure you’ll have a weatherproof place to sleep, and save you having to cart around and build a tent. This pod (in a little tree-lined clearing) is a good solid structure, made of fully insulated timber with openable double-glazed windows, so it should stay temperate whatever happens in the outside world. Beardown’s pod is kitted out with a double bed, a small sofa bed and a mini kitchen area with fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. A firepit with grill, a picnic table and a covered seating area are on hand outside, along with a shared undercover campers kitchen including a gas stove (you'll just need to bring your own cookware). You can buy firewood on site, but for other purchases (and cafés or pub trips) the village of Princetown is five minutes’ drive away and the bigger Yelverton is 15 minutes. Seeking a bit of breathing space? This should be the place to find it – the farm stretches to 1,100 acres of moorland bordered by the Cowsic and West Dart rivers and it’s hired out on an exclusive-use basis, so you’ll have the place to yourselves (well, yourselves and the beef cattle and sheep that live here…) It’s worth noting that working farms aren’t entirely silent places though, so you may hear some noise from machinery, vehicles, livestock and dogs at the nearby farmyard.

Local attractions

The keen walkers among you will have a lot of choices around here, including hikes that are easy to access on foot… perhaps go for a wander around the cool moss-covered trees of Wistman’s Wood (half an hour’s walk)? Take a lap around Laughter Tor (an hour and a half)? Or head off onto the bridleway in Bellever Forest (an hour and 45 minutes)? There are more walking trails (and fishing too) at Burrator Reservoir (10 minutes’ drive). Dartmoor National Park visitor centre (five minutes) is close by to plan your days out there. As for those of you who’d rather cover ground on horseback, there’s a local horse riding centre (10 minutes) too. For more of the outdoorsy stuff, Crag 2 Mountain outdoor activity centre (five minutes) will bring out the rock climber or mountaineer in you. On the flip side, when you’re ready to take in some history instead, the National Trust’s Buckland Abbey (20 minutes) is one such place over 700 years old, while in Morwellham Quay (25 minutes), there’s a mine train, historic working village and a brewery to wash it all down.

Camping pod

Liked: We had a lovely stay in this gorgeous location. So quiet and peaceful with a feeling of being out in nature at the same time as having all the conveniences we needed. We had campfires every night, cooked on the hob in the kitchen, ate at the picnic benches, explored local little walks and took lots of day trips to find entertainment for the kids (House of Marbles and River Dean Country Park were favourites). We also took advantage of the recommended eateries in the welcome pack to find great places for meals around the area. The pod itself was warm, dry and clean and having a mini fridge, kettle and plug sockets was perfect!

Disliked: Bed was a little bit lumpy.

Camping pod

Liked: Great location with lots of good walks nearby. The facilities were all clean and working. The actual pod was plenty big enough to sleep four and still have room for all your gear. The sheltered outside seating is lovely for if the weather takes a turn for the worst. The farm was quiet and hardly noticeable. I would highly recommend this site to anyone interested.
