Porte Meadow Campsite: Spacious grass pitches

General

  • Secluded grass pitches on a farm on the edge of Exmoor National Park
  • A 25-minute drive to Woolacombe beach; 10 minutes from Exmoor Zoo
  • Dedicated dog park, moors walks from site and pubs 10 minutes’ drive

Occupying a quiet farm meadow on the edge of Exmoor National Park, Porte Meadow Campsite has spectacular views over fields and open Devon countryside. Stargazers, surfers, families and dog-lovers – you couldn’t be better placedthan here, what with dark night-time skies, beaches less than 40 minutes’ drive away, and a designated dog park for canine chums needing an off-lead run.

There’s a communal firepit for summer barbecues, and you can stock up on grill goodies in Combe Martin (10 minutes’ drive), which has a couple of convenience stores as well as a choice of pubs and restaurants if you’d rather leave the cooking to someone else.

For special treats, how about the hotel across the road (five minutes’ walk… no need to worry about the car) for breakfast fry ups, cream teas and dinners using the best of local produce? The pub at Blackmore Gate (five minutes’ drive) also does a fine line in wholesome food with cracking Exmoor views.

Great situation, big field, so very distanced from other campers. Views across valley are beautiful - even saw deer! When the road quietened down early in the evening it was very peaceful, but weren’t disturbed by road noise before that. Great welcome from Dave who checked us in, even gave us a free bag of wood for our fire pit.
Would recommend if you want to get away from it all, and don’t mind basic facilities. Good value for money.

Some confusion over showers, when I booked it said in the description there were showers. Was disappointed to find there weren’t any, especially as we were staying for 5 nights. Warm water in the toilets though so was able to take a wash there.

Everything! :) The people were lovely and welcoming- helping with our campfire- we ended up as the only ones there while they had a family party and invited us to join them.

Lovely campsite with stunning views of the surrounding hills, great field for pitching a tent, only a quiet road nearby, and easy access to facilities.

Friendly farmer owner who made sure we had everything we needed, even dropped off a bit of wood for our campfire as we had forgotten to pick any up before hand.

A convenient distance for a short drive to both Combe Martin & Lynton.

There was a pub and restaurant over the road but we didn't visit it so can't say how good it is.

Lots of bunny rabbits in the hedgerows to watch jump around all evening!

Local attractions

This corner of Devon is a surfers' haven, with reliable waves off well-known beaches including Woolacombe (25 minutes’ drive), Saunton Sands and Croyde (both 35 minutes). Board hire and surfing lessons are available for all standards at each of these beaches, as well as plenty of sand and dunes for younger children (and dogs, seasonal rules apply) to run around on safely (as well as ice-cream shops for special treats).

If the kids need a break from splashing around on the beaches, try them out with the robotic dinosaurs and keeper talks at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, or take them to get up close and personal with wolves at Exmoor Zoo (both 10 minutes’ drive).

For outdoor activities, you can hike sections of the South West Coast Path (15 minutes) for glorious headland views and bracing air, or explore the moorlands in Exmoor National Park – some walks have direct access right from the camping field. Further afield, cross the Barle river on the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (35 minutes) and reward yourself with a cream tea in the riverside pub.
