  • Secluded grass pitches on a farm on the edge of Exmoor National Park
  • A 25-minute drive to Woolacombe beach; 10 minutes from Exmoor Zoo
  • Dog walk on site; moors walks from site; pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Occupying a quiet farm meadow on the edge of Exmoor National Park, Porte Meadow Campsite has spectacular views over fields and open Devon countryside. Stargazers, surfers, families and dog-lovers – you couldn’t be better placed than here, what with dark night-time skies, beaches less than 40 minutes’ drive away, and a designated dog park for dogs needing a run. There’s a communal firepit for summer barbecues, and you can stock up on grill goodies in Combe Martin (10 minutes’ drive), which has a couple of convenience stores as well as a choice of pubs and restaurants if you’d rather leave the cooking to someone else. For special treats, how about the hotel across the road (five minutes’ walk… no need to worry about the car) for breakfast fry ups, cream teas and dinners using the best of local produce? The pub at Blackmore Gate (five minutes’ drive) also does a fine line in wholesome food with cracking Exmoor views. Back at base camp, a round-up of basic facilities includes toilets and showers.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Was slightly sceptical after seeing some reviews but they were far from the truth. Location was very good being near lots of walks and beaches, the view was amazing with wild deer and other wildlife on show. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the facilities were of a good standard along with the area being able to pitch up anywhere was perfect.

Local attractions

This corner of Devon is a surfers' haven, with reliable waves off well-known beaches including Woolacombe (25 minutes’ drive), Saunton Sands and Croyde (both 35 minutes). Board hire and surfing lessons are available for all standards at each of these beaches, as well as plenty of sand and dunes for younger children (and dogs, seasonal rules apply) to run around on safely (as well as ice-cream shops for special treats). If the kids need a break from splashing around on the beaches, try them out with the robotic dinosaurs and keeper talks at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, or take them to get up close and personal with wolves at Exmoor Zoo (both 10 minutes’ drive). For outdoor activities, you can hike sections of the South West Coast Path (15 minutes) for glorious headland views and bracing air, or explore the moorlands in Exmoor National Park – some walks have direct access right from the camping field. Further afield, cross the Barle river on the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (35 minutes) and reward yourself with a cream tea in the riverside pub.
