Camp Wild at Burrow Hill Farm: View from a pitch

General

  • 'Nearly-wild' five-acre site with views over the Blackdown Hills
  • Exmoor National Park and Jurassic Coast within a 45-minute drive
  • Private toilet, shower, firepit and kitchen unit at each pitch

If you quite fancy the idea of wild camping but aren’t sure you’ll take to the idea of abandoning such things as toilets, there's a great compromise to be had in the form of Camp Wild at Burrow Hill Farm.

This secluded site on a Devon hillside has all the atmosphere of a proper wild camping location: it’s completely off grid (so you’ll need to bring torches), with just a couple of large pitches and well away from any roads. You can pick your own camping spot here, but as the pitches are not accessible by car your kit will be transported for you.

After that, you’re left to your own devices to forage for wood, build your campfire, or explore the footpaths that can be accessed from the farm. You’ll be sharing your space with lots of wildlife, so sit or stroll quietly and you may spot badgers and deer in the field or buzzards, ravens and swallows in the sky overhead. And even if you’re not lucky on that front, there’s many a pretty thing to see among the wildflowers, the hedgerows and the woodlands.

Later on, the dark skies lend themselves well to nights of stargazing, and you may see the bats at play in the woods or hear the odd owl hooting.

And those amenities? There’s a portable toilet, a solar shower tent and a camping kitchen unit for each pitch, and you can get water from a spring (piped from the main house supply). All the bits you need for your barbecue or campfire can be sourced at the supermarket in Hemyock, a mile away along the footpath or lane (it’s also got a pub if you’d rather have your food cooked for you…)

Wild-ish camping with a few home comforts and stunning views16/09/2021

This location is an absolute gem if you are looking for a really special, semi-wild camping experience. We couldn’t believe our luck with the location, which felt secluded and remote although it was close to the village of Hemyock.

The owners couldn’t have been more helpful, taking our tent and kit upto the pitch in their farm truck, advising us on dog friendly places to visit and local wildlife.

Although we had our own cooking equipment, there was provision of a Bar B Q, pots and a kettle and access to water. The pitch we chose was flat, with stunning views across the valley and would have been large enough for a couple of bigger tents if we’d been with our family

Having a picnic bench, porta-loo and fire pit also provided meant all our needs for a little camping comfort were met; sitting by the log fire burning logs we’d foraged from the woods, toasting crumpets and marshmallows, watching the stars and listening to owls hunting was one of the most magical experiences we’ve had for some time. We spotted deer and a host of wild flowers and lying in our sleeping bags watching the sunrise through the tent door was just perfect.

We consider ourselves extremely fortunate that we discovered this little haven and will definitely be returning

Chris and Caroline were great hosts, extremely helpful and made us feel welcome from the start. This is wild camping in an amazing spot with fantastic views, we were given a toilet tent with a camping toilet that was emptied for us every day, and a solar shower that did the job! Very quiet and peaceful, with only two pitches that are far away from each other it's perfect if you're looking for a full on relax! Camp fire every night, watching the sun set and the moon rise with a beer or two, what more could you want? Great location too with around a half hour drive to Lyme Regis, Branscombe, Sidmouth and Beer. We couldn't recommend Burrow Hill Farm enough and we will definitely be returning.

Chris and Caroline are very welcoming, friendly and helpful thank you. Loved the chance to keep freezing our cooler box ice packs, and the daily collection of rubbish and emptying of the porta loo from our pitch with logs for the fire pit being dropped off amazing. Very safe set up for children in a wonderful location. Views stunning and whole area very peaceful. Definitely recommended. 👌

From the manager...

Thank you both for staying with us on your first ever camping trip and for your comments from your 1 night stay over the bank holiday weekend.
The site and view is very special as we are in the Blackdown Hills area of outstanding natural beauty. This 5 acre wild flower meadow site you shared with one other pitch that makes this a very tranquil and peaceful place to camp which you enjoyed. The campsite is on a hillside with significant slopes however the pitches are on a natural plateaux within. I’m glad you noticed all the wildflowers in the meadow, this is now a very rare experience with 97% being lost since the turn of the twentieth century. We are therefore loathed to bring in heavy machinery to level areas within the site as this ancient grassland would be lost forever.so we prefer to work with the natural landscape.
Each of the 2 pitches are provided with their own private facilities, making this very covid safe for your stay. These include toilet and privacy pop up tent, solar shower, water, barbecue, fire pit, field kitchen, disinfectant and hand sanitizer and picnic bench. All serviced daily which you appreciated. You can also freely foraage the site for as much firewood as you need. , but I believe all this makes us excellent value for money .
Hopefully on your second camping experience you will find a more suitable mattress for a more comfortable night.

Beautiful location, we had a fabulous time at Burrow farm. Wild, peaceful and tranquil. A beautiful pitch around a camp fire with the most stunning views. Only 1 other family and they were completely away from us. A picnic table, fire pit, portaloo and solar shower was provided along with a camping kitchen and kitchen items. Christopher and Caroline came everyday to clean and check we had everything we needed. The grounds are stunning and every detail has been thought about. I could have happily stayed longer!

Local attractions

Burrow Hill Farm is within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are plenty of ways to explore some of the scenery that earned the area its title. Set out straight from your tent to get going on local footpaths, perhaps to the Wellington monument or up to Culmstock Beacon for some smashing views.

For walks further afield, head to Exmoor National Park (45 minutes’ drive) or head shore-wards to the South West Coast Path. Burrow Hill is fairly central in Devon so it’s about an hour’s drive to the north coast or 45 minutes south to the fossil-filled Jurassic Coast.

Time for a bit of a sit down? Head to the beach in Lyme Regis or Sidmouth or take a ride on the tramway in Seaton (all 40 minutes). Devon Railway Centre and Knightshayes Court (both 35 minutes) are also good ideas for days out nearby, as is a wander around Exeter (40 minutes).
