Camp Wild at Burrow Hill Farm: Camp fire preparations

General

  • 'Nearly-wild' five-acre site with views over the Blackdown Hills
  • Exmoor National Park and Jurassic Coast within a 45-minute drive
  • Private toilet, shower, firepit and kitchen unit at each pitch

If you quite fancy the idea of wild camping but aren’t sure you’ll take to the idea of abandoning such things as toilets, there's a great compromise to be had in the form of Camp Wild at Burrow Hill Farm.

This secluded site on a Devon hillside has all the atmosphere of a proper wild camping location: it’s completely off grid (so you’ll need to bring torches), with just a couple of large pitches and well away from any roads. You can pick your own camping spot here, but as the pitches are not accessible by car your kit will be transported for you.

After that, you’re left to your own devices to forage for wood, build your campfire, or explore the footpaths that can be accessed from the farm. You’ll be sharing your space with lots of wildlife, so sit or stroll quietly and you may spot badgers and deer in the field or buzzards, ravens and swallows in the sky overhead. And even if you’re not lucky on that front, there’s many a pretty thing to see among the wildflowers, the hedgerows and the woodlands.

Later on, the dark skies lend themselves well to nights of stargazing, and you may see the bats at play in the woods or hear the odd owl hooting.

And those amenities? There’s a portable toilet, a solar shower tent and a camping kitchen unit for each pitch, and you can get water from a spring (piped from the main house supply). There's also an electric vehicle charging point available for use on a metered basis.

All the bits you need for your barbecue or campfire can be sourced at the supermarket in Hemyock, a mile away along the footpath or lane (it’s also got a pub if you’d rather have your food cooked for you…)

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

Minimum spacing of 25 metres between pitches.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Unfortunately this site does not suit those who have mobility issues.

When we arrived we were warmly welcomed and assisted with loading our kit onto the vehicle to take to our pitch. Our pitch was super spacious, with plenty of space for the children (6&8) to play and explore - and with only two pitches that are extremely well spaced we didn't have to worry about the kids making too much noise. Provided was a camp toilet with pop up tent, kitchen unit with pans and washing up bowl, picnic bench and spring water on tap.
Super quiet location and dark skies. We heard owls close by and saw bats, deer, buzzards, swallows and frogs.
Lots of footpaths nearby and Hemyock only a short walk away with pub and shops. Local farm selling eggs too. The kids loved collecting wood for the campfire and for making dens.
Very friendly and helpful owners. We had an amazing stay and will be back next year.

The tranquil setting. The views of the Blackdiwn Hills. They supplied each pitch their own toilet in a pop up cubical , which was great (no sharing) and they emptied it for us every day and collected our rubbish. Only 2 pitches so it was quiet and peaceful. The owners were so lovely and helpful. They supplied a mobile fire pit which we cooked on. It was wild camping with a touch of glamping. 5 star luxury xx

This was just what we needed after a busy year working at secondary schools. It's a very peaceful site and the two pitches are really spaced away from each other. We could barely see the other one. The views are really lovely. We just read books, absorbed the view, used the campfire and BBQ provided to cook some delicious meals and overall, properly relaxed. We're going back again at the end of the summer holidays because we enjoyed it so much.
Chris and Caroline are great hosts, ferrying all of our stuff up to the pitch in their cool all terrain vehicle!
There were good walks for the dog and wildlife to watch while you chill out on your camp chair.

Wild-ish camping with a few home comforts and stunning views16/09/2021

This location is an absolute gem if you are looking for a really special, semi-wild camping experience. We couldn’t believe our luck with the location, which felt secluded and remote although it was close to the village of Hemyock.

The owners couldn’t have been more helpful, taking our tent and kit upto the pitch in their farm truck, advising us on dog friendly places to visit and local wildlife.

Although we had our own cooking equipment, there was provision of a Bar B Q, pots and a kettle and access to water. The pitch we chose was flat, with stunning views across the valley and would have been large enough for a couple of bigger tents if we’d been with our family

Having a picnic bench, porta-loo and fire pit also provided meant all our needs for a little camping comfort were met; sitting by the log fire burning logs we’d foraged from the woods, toasting crumpets and marshmallows, watching the stars and listening to owls hunting was one of the most magical experiences we’ve had for some time. We spotted deer and a host of wild flowers and lying in our sleeping bags watching the sunrise through the tent door was just perfect.

We consider ourselves extremely fortunate that we discovered this little haven and will definitely be returning

Local attractions

Burrow Hill Farm is within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are plenty of ways to explore some of the scenery that earned the area its title. Set out straight from your tent to get going on local footpaths, perhaps to the Wellington monument or up to Culmstock Beacon for some smashing views.

For walks further afield, head to Exmoor National Park (45 minutes’ drive) or head shore-wards to the South West Coast Path. Burrow Hill is fairly central in Devon so it’s about an hour’s drive to the north coast or 45 minutes south to the fossil-filled Jurassic Coast.

Time for a bit of a sit down? Head to the beach in Lyme Regis or Sidmouth or take a ride on the tramway in Seaton (all 40 minutes). Devon Railway Centre and Knightshayes Court (both 35 minutes) are also good ideas for days out nearby, as is a wander around Exeter (40 minutes).
