  • Secluded camping field at a busy pub just off the A39 Atlantic Highway
  • A 10-minute drive to Clovelly village; 20 minutes to surfing at Bude
  • Beer garden and bar; full use of the gym and Jacuzzi; close to beaches
If you base yourself on the camping field behind the West Country Inn near Hartland, you’re never going to starve or go thirsty. Guests can use all the amenities of the historic pub, and that involves enjoying quality dining in the restaurant as well as sampling a few pints of local cider in the bar. This popular spot is the last pub in Devon if you’re travelling along the Atlantic Highway (the A39), and it also has a spacious beer garden with picnic benches for sunny days. Along with peaceful rural views (on a clear day, views from the moorland up the road stretch as far as Lundy Island) you have free use of the secure car park, and you can up the fitness regime in the gym (if you really must) or simply chill in the pub’s Jacuzzi. Loos and showers are located in the pub too. The camping field is right next-door to Bursdon Moor, a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its rare and protected species of birds and butterflies. It’s also close to Welcombe Mouth Beach (15 minutes’ drive) for family fun splashing around in the sea, and serious surfing waves at Bude (20 minutes).

Rough round the edges, friendly staff, not a campsite more pop-up

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet location, friendly staff, pub.

Disliked: Not much of a campsite, just an area next to a car park.

From the manager: Dear Anonymous, It really sounds like you camped in the Beer Garden area instead of the actual campsite where there is a chemical waste disposal, dry waste and fresh water areas. What a shame you did not venture into the two acre camp site other than the car park area! Many thanks.
