This campsite receives overwhelmingly positive feedback for its friendly and accommodating hosts, well-maintained and clean facilities, and ideal location close to Clovelly. Guests particularly praised the spacious pitches, the honesty shop, and the pleasant atmosphere. While the proximity to the main road was noted as a potential source of noise for some, most found it did not detract significantly from their stay. This was our third stay at…
Electric grass pitch
Liked This was our third stay at this wonderful site. Its a perfect location to use as a base for exploring the North Devon coast, and venturing into Cornwall, whilst also being the perfect place to switch off and relax in idyllic peace.
Located just off the Higher Clovelly roundabout on the A39 Atlantic Highway, the site is easy to find and access.
On arrival there is a board that tells you where to pitch, if you are booked in, or a number you call for if you aren’t.
The pitches themselves are all grass and relatively flat. The electric pitches are all in the larger field. The non electric ones are in the smaller field at the far end of the site, and have the added bonus of a large paddock of Free Range Chickens for company. You can purchase their eggs from the stand at the main gate.
There is also a “Glamping Bell Tent” available for hire.
The toilets and showers are kept spotlessly clean and are a joy to use. The showers are coin operated and cost £1 for 5 minutes use.
On the front of the toilet block there is a nice little washing up area with hot and cold running water. We stayed during a heatwave and the cold water comes out VERY cold, which is blissfully quenching.
There is a tap for filling water containers on the right hand side of the big field and dustbins between the pitches (that are emptied regularly).
The Chemical Disposal point is just inside the main gate.
There is a useful little shop on site that operates on the honesty system, and it must be an absolute boon for backpackers as it stocks ready meals that can be made in the shop using a kettle and microwave that are provided. You can also make tea and coffee.
The owners, Karen & Nick are so lovely and accommodating. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they hold regular “Pizza Nights” on a Saturday during the high season.
The site overall is very pretty and nicely maintained.
The village of Clovelly, with its famously car free and steep streets is an easy walk from the site. We recommend walking in along Wrinkleberry Lane (you don't have to pay, that way). Once in the harbor, walk a few hundred yards along the coast to your right and there is a beautiful waterfall cascading down the wooded cliff face. Make sure you wear stout shoes.
In the village of Woolfardisworthy, a 3 minute drive away, there is a good village shop, a fish and chip shop and a dairy farm where you can buy the most deliciously fresh milk (and milkshakes too) from a vending machine at the farm gate.
We had a wonderful stay can’t wait to return.
Its worth noting that Roey’s retreat do not accept twin axle caravans. Possibly due to the tightness of the exit when leaving the site and entering the island. I would guess that larger motorhomes may struggle too.
Also, yes, the site is adjacent to the A39, but for a main road it’s really not that busy. It’s mostly farm traffic. If you are a light sleeper, in a tent, you just need to be aware. It doesn’t bother us at all.

Fabulous
Non-electric grass pitch
Liked We had a Short one night stay at Roey’s campsite. Karen was amazing, very welcoming.
Taxi service, tick removal service courtesy of her friend who was armed with tweezers ready to remove from a very delicate area of my partners body 🤣
It’s not the sort of thing you expect to need assistance with while camping, or maybe it is actually, but their willingness to help really showed how much they care about their guests. My partner has told everyone since home the tick story. Beyond the excellent facilities and beautiful surroundings, it’s this level of customer care that makes the campsite stand out.
Thank you again for going above and beyond—I truly appreciated it and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this campsite to others.
Disliked Absolutely nothing

Highly recommend this family friendly campsite
Electric grass pitch
Liked We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this family-friendly campsite. As first-time campers, we were a little nervous about what to expect, but we couldn't have chosen a better place to start our camping adventures.
The hosts were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to help whenever needed, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The site facilities were spotless at all times and clearly very well maintained. It was a shame we couldn't stay longer to enjoy the home made pizza night which we were told takes place on on weekend. They also have a little shop which sells the essentials onsite with an honesty box.
A particular highlight for our daughter was helping to feed the chickens, which was such a lovely touch and added to the friendly, family atmosphere of the campsite.
The location was also fantastic, with several dog-friendly beaches nearby where we spent some lovely days exploring and relaxing.
Overall, this campsite exceeded our expectations in every way. We would highly recommend it to families, dog owners, and anyone looking for a friendly, well-kept campsite. We can't wait to return and continue our camping adventures here.
Disliked There wasn't anything to dislike about this campsite.

Fantastic little homely site.
Electric grass pitch
Liked Fantastic little campsite, everything perfect and spotlessly clean, owner on hand with clear information on the area. Will definitely recommend and will be back again to visit when in the area.
We even purchased some free range eggs to bring back.
Disliked On leaving the site, the entrance gate had lots of high overhanging branches which damaged my top light on the drivers corner.

Site was excellent in ideal location…
Electric grass pitch
Liked Site was excellent in ideal location with clean facilities
Disliked Right next to noisy main road (A39) and as a light sleeper woke many times in the night as the main North Devon road.

Great place.
Bell tent
Liked Owners are great, friendly and attentive. Site was perfectly located to explore coastal Devon and north of Cornwall.
Bell tent we stayed at was great and had everything we needed.

Perfect site for one night whilst visiting Clovelly.
Non-electric grass pitch
Liked We booked a non electric pitch and I’d say our pitch was probably the best. We were next to the chickens and had plenty of space to park up without feeling crowded.
The Retreat was easy to find and the board at the entrance was great when checking in… perfect for flexibility when arriving. The toilets were clean and smelt fresh. We didn’t use the showers but it was great to have that option. The washing up area was great and the water was suitable for drinking which was a god send with it being such a warm weekend.
We found a great track on our walk to Clovelly which was about 30-40 mins with a dog.
Disliked For those that wouldn’t appreciate an early wake up call from a Cockerel, being parked next to the chickens wouldn’t be ideal. Also, you could hear a lot of road traffic in the non electric field but you soon got use to it.
