Roey's Retreat: Visitor aerial image of the pitch field

General

  • Small north Devon site just off the A39, five minutes from Clovelly
  • A 15-minute drive to Westward Ho!; 25 minutes to Bude beach
  • Play area, shop and firepits on site; weekly social barbecues

As north Devon locations go, this is a particularly fine one – Roey’s Retreat is at the midpoint between Bideford and Bude, and it’s just off the A39 for easy journeys to either (or a whole host of other beaches and attractions…)

This setting isn’t all about getting out elsewhere though – it’s also a great spot for walks down to Clovelly, less than two miles away, or other rambles along the South West Coast Path and around the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast. A drive of five minutes or so will get you to the neighbouring villages of Hartland or Woolfardisworthy for shops and pubs, or you can stroll to the local social club a couple of minutes away for drinks.

Owner Nick hasn’t just relied on location alone to make his campsite an attractive place, either – he’s also kitted it out with all sorts of handy features including picnic benches, firepits, a play area with swings, and a shop selling various groceries and essentials (where you can also hire any camping kit you may have forgotten – electric leads for the hookups, air bed pumps and the like). Toilets and showers are provided, as are a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point for tourers.

On top of all this is a friendly atmosphere that extends to welcoming families and dogs and involves Nick bringing everyone together for a sociable barbecue evening once a week (though you can also hire barbecues to do your own cooking too). You're also welcome to use the covered seating area where you can shelter from the rain (or, more hopefully, the sun) while having your meals and drinks – it makes a nice friendly alternative to hanging out at your tent.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

A charge of £1.00 applies for the use of the shower.

Well what can I say. The friendliness and help of the owners were brilliant. We arrived on Saturday after quite a few soggy days rain. Bearing in mind if we hadn't of pre booked it would have been shut. We tried to park on our space and got stuck in the mud. The owners came and towed us out and we then stayed on the hard track. Alls good thank you. We would stop again

Arrived at Roeys Retreat on a wet and windy afternoon.
Had a very peaceful if somewhat wet stay.
Owner was so helpful and lovely. She even took me to Clovelly (I was on a walking holiday) and arranged for her son to bring me back.
    So above and beyond.
Facilities were great. Nice hot shower and a very clean toilet.

Excellent camp site, Karen and Nick are so friendly. Beautiful location, a short walk to the cobbles of Clovelly. Lots of benches, perfect for people (like us) who are walking the coast path and staying in a tent. Nick even gave us a lift to the start point of our walk one day. We will definitely be back!

Location - great for exploring, central to the area, nice pubs

It's not a dislike, more an observation - I thought the sinks in the shower/toilet block could be a little bigger?

Even though its by the main road there's still a sense of calm and peacefulness, the pitches are a good size and easily handled a 8man tunnel tent, a 2man dome tent (used by our eldest for her own space) a gazebo and a trailer! The facilities are kept spotless and you always see the owners Nick and Karen bobbing in and out, pottering around and cleaning, there's only 2 unisex showers and 2 of each single sex toilets, although there was never a queue for either, so not a problem, they have their own little caravan shop on site selling all the essentials, fresh eggs from their own chickens which can be seen in the bottom field, and bacon, (not seen in the bottom field) the owners are very knowledgeable of the area, and can inform you of places worth a visit, Clovelly historic harbour is a short walk away, but NOT a easy walk, the steep hill out of the village is a 20% incline and not a easy walk, even dogs were refusing to walk up it and being carried lol! Although there is a land rover service that will take you back up for a small charge per person, theres the milky way adventure park about a mile away which is aimed at little ones, and the local dairy farm has a milkshake vending machine where you buy a reusable glass bottle, pick a flavour syrup and then fill with their own fresh milk, shops are a alot futher, but close to Westwood ho! Which is a gorgeous blue flag long sandy beach with a sea pool, crazy golf, go karts and plenty of places to eat and drink, but if you don't fancy seaside fish and chips, nick and Karen hold a weekly social bbq on site, which although we never went to because our eldest only eats chicken breast, is a really nice idea to let someone else do the cooking, nicest 2 weeks we've had for a while, 5 star, small friendly campsite, welcomes dogs, swings and chickens for the little ones, immaculate facilities close to the cornish boarder and really peaceful

Local attractions

The nearby stretch of coastline has loads going for it, and plenty of variety too. Westward Ho! beach (15 minutes’ drive) is a great spot for a family day out, with a wide swathe of sand and some rockpools for the kids to poke about in. The water there has gentle waves for a bit of bodyboarding; for a bigger swell you’ll need to head to Bude (25 minutes), which also has surf lessons and kit hire.

There’s a lot of history scattered along the seafront too, including the old fishing village of Clovelly (five minutes) and the excellent Tintagel Castle (45 minutes), a place infused with the legend of King Arthur. A little way inland, Hartland Abbey (10 minutes) is worth a stop too.

Trying to keep the kids entertained on holiday? There are several places nearby to help out with that – top picks include the BIG Sheep farm park (15 minutes), North Devon Wake Park and The Milky Way Adventure Park. These last two are only two minutes’ drive away so they’re very handy to have in mind.
