  • Small north Devon site just off the A39, five minutes from Clovelly
  • A 15-minute drive to Westward Ho!; 25 minutes to Bude beach
  • Play area, shop and firepits on site; weekly social barbecues
As north Devon locations go, this is a particularly fine one – Roey’s Retreat is at the midpoint between Bideford and Bude, and it’s just off the A39 for easy journeys to either (or a whole host of other beaches and attractions…) This setting isn’t all about getting out elsewhere though – it’s also a great spot for walks down to Clovelly, less than two miles away, or other rambles along the South West Coast Path and around the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast. A drive of five minutes or so will get you to the neighbouring villages of Hartland or Woolfardisworthy for shops and pubs, or you can stroll to the local social club a couple of minutes away for drinks. Owner Nick hasn’t just relied on location alone to make his site an attractive place, either – he’s also kitted it out with all sorts of handy features including picnic benches, firepits, a play area with swings, and a shop selling various groceries and essentials (where you can also hire any camping kit you may have forgotten – electric leads for the hookups, air bed pumps and the like). Toilets and showers are provided, as are a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point for tourers. On top of all this is a friendly atmosphere that extends to welcoming families and dogs and involves Nick bringing everyone together for a sociable barbecue evening once a week (though you can also hire barbecues to do your own cooking too). You're also welcome to use the covered seating area where you can shelter from the rain (or, more hopefully, the sun) while having your meals and drinks – it makes a nice friendly alternative to hanging out at your tent.

What customers say

This is a small, clean campsite with friendly and helpful owners. It's ideally located for visiting Clovelly and the coast path. Facilities are generally well-maintained and clean, including showers requiring a small fee. A handy 24-hour honesty shop is available. Some guests noted road noise. Issues with soft ground after heavy rain were managed by offering alternatives.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Fantastic little campsite, everything perfect and spotlessly clean, owner on hand with clear information on the area. Will definitely recommend and will be back again to visit when in the area.
We even purchased some free range eggs to bring back.

Disliked On leaving the site, the entrance gate had lots of high overhanging branches which damaged my top light on the drivers corner.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We booked a non electric pitch and I’d say our pitch was probably the best. We were next to the chickens and had plenty of space to park up without feeling crowded.
The Retreat was easy to find and the board at the entrance was great when checking in… perfect for flexibility when arriving. The toilets were clean and smelt fresh. We didn’t use the showers but it was great to have that option. The washing up area was great and the water was suitable for drinking which was a god send with it being such a warm weekend.
We found a great track on our walk to Clovelly which was about 30-40 mins with a dog.

Disliked For those that wouldn’t appreciate an early wake up call from a Cockerel, being parked next to the chickens wouldn’t be ideal. Also, you could hear a lot of road traffic in the non electric field but you soon got use to it.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The owners were absolutely lovely, very welcoming, made an effort to come and say hello whenever they were passing. Toilets were clean. There were a few swings that kept the children entertained for hours, along with they loved going to visit the chickens. Most importantly the pitches were a great size with plenty of space for a good set up and children to play never felt too close to the neighbours. Over the weekend they had a pizza evening which we didn’t take part in this time but definitely a lovely touch to save cooking and a great atmosphere. Overall one of the best campsites we have stayed in. Thank you for having us and being very welcoming!

Electric grass pitch

Liked Roey’s is a lovely little camp site, ideal for visiting beautiful Clovelly, but the weather had its wicked way.
It soaked the ground before we got there, so we got stuck (easily resolved)
The wind and the rain hammered us relentlessly all night, only to wake to sunshine!!

Disliked The English weather can make or break a holiday and it definitely tried it’s hardest on this occasion

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked .

Disliked Entrance is very tight , not good for paintwork, ours is a 6m motorhome. Only grass and so with heavy rain it is not suitable at all.
Was offered a different plot over the phone as noone there, no reception, , literally a field but again not suitable under weather conditions and we would have got stuck. Was told over the phone they would pull us off if stuck . We decided to leave and parked in clovely main car park for free.

From the manager: Hi Lisa. Im sorry to read your review quite upsetting that you have written what you have. We'd had awful weather that week so had cancelled everyone due to the soft ground. We offered everyone a refund but most people opted to move there booking to another date. As we don't have any hard standing pitches it will look like a field when empty. You opted to still visit us even when we said it was probably not a good idea and yes we did offer to pull you out if you'd had gotten stuck. We did tell you about another campsite down the road with hardstanding so we did try our best.

As above!

Local attractions

The nearby stretch of coastline has loads going for it, and plenty of variety too. Westward Ho! beach (15 minutes’ drive) is a great spot for a family day out, with a wide swathe of sand and some rockpools for the kids to poke about in. The water there has gentle waves for a bit of bodyboarding; for a bigger swell you’ll need to head to Bude (25 minutes), which also has surf lessons and kit hire. There’s a lot of history scattered along the seafront too, including the old fishing village of Clovelly (five minutes) and the excellent Tintagel Castle (45 minutes), a place infused with the legend of King Arthur. A little way inland, Hartland Abbey (10 minutes) is worth a stop too. Trying to keep the kids entertained on holiday? There are several places nearby to help out with that – top picks include the Big Sheep farm park (15 minutes), North Devon Wake Park and The Milky Way Adventure Park. These last two are only two minutes’ drive away so they’re very handy to have in mind.
