Lakemoor: The Cabin in its secluded corner (photo added by manager on 02/09/2022)

General

  • Family-run Devon smallholding with eco-friendly amenities
  • Exmoor Zoo, Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! within 45 minutes' drive
  • Beach area on the River Taw for swims, canoes and paddleboards

A little slice of heaven in Devon, say the owners… and it’s pretty easy to see why. Lakemoor’s location is indeed rather dreamy, on the banks of the River Taw (with a beach area giving access for swims, paddles and launching kayaks or paddleboards) and with a lake thrown in for good measure too.

This is a family-run smallholding spread over five acres, which you’ll share with the resident goats, geese and chickens. There’s plenty of ground to go around though, so you’ll have ample space for things like games, campfires (in the firepits provided, please), barbecues and generally scampering about in the open air.

Now, if you lived in a place like this you’d want to do your best to preserve it as it should be, right? And so it is with the Lakemoor team too: this is an eco-friendly place with compost toilets, recycling and solar lighting, plus pick-ups for those travelling by public transport (Eggesford railway station is a couple of minutes’ drive away).

Despite its rural outlook, this is a site that’s surprisingly easy to access, as it’s just off the A377 Exeter to Barnstaple road (and a little over half an hour’s drive from both). Local settlements are somewhat smaller, but guests have access to a village shop, pub and curry house in the villages of Chawleigh and Chumleigh (both about five minutes’ drive away).

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Dogs are not allowed if you are staying in the accommodation units.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Reception is unmanned after 8 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

Lovely rural setting and wonderful couple running their smallholding Justin in particular was a superstar with my 7yo son who was in his element helping to feed all the animals on the smallholding and get them up/put them to bed every day it was certainly the highlight of his entire holiday and he would be outside the shop waiting everyday to assist, the only day when we were too late back for helping he was distraught at not being there to aid Justin - He has even recreated the scene with his toys every day since being back home.
Facilities were great, plenty of space to run around and even access to the river which we sadly didnt take advantage of due to weather conditions though we did manage a BBQ in between the showers.
If youve got young children who like the outdoors and animals you would struggle to find a better alternative than here.
Thank you Lakemoor View for our highly enjoyable stay and to Justin in particular for his patience, wealth of knowledge and amount of time he imparted us. We will certainly love to stay here again next time we come your way.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for your 10/10 review and for the kind words you have left, to know that your son is recreating his memories from his holiday means such a lot. So glad you had such a good time, we look forward to seeing you all again.

A friendly rural setting, next to the river and with a small lake. Lots of animals, pigs, goats chickens, ducks. It was absolutely blissful with good eco values. Laidback and happy. There is a small branch Lind railway station a short walk away which can give options for day travel with a great cafe and farm shop too. Highly recommended.

Delightful location near the river Taw. Close to main road but this did not impede our enjoyment. Pigs, goats, chickens and geese make it fun for younger children. Facilities are clean. Very reasonably priced. There is a small shop with basic things. The owners are friendly but unobtrusive.

Local attractions

Time out in the open air here can be spent playing golf (there’s an 18-hole course five minutes away in Chumleigh), taking walks through the hundred-year old Eggesford Forest (five minutes’ drive) or tackling the Tarka Trail by bike – the UK’s longest off-road cycle trail passes handily close to the site.

There’s no fishing in the river on site, so if you want to give your angling kit some action, you’ll need to head to Stafford Moor Fishery (15 minutes). If you’d rather head inside for some watery activity, there’s a pool in South Molton (20 minutes) – while you’re here, pay a visit to the Quince Honey Farm for beekeeping demonstrations and a great soft play area.

To meet bigger creatures, take yourselves to Watertown Llamas (10 minutes) or choose something a bit more exotic with an outing to Exmoor Zoo (40 minutes). Or of course you could swap countryside time for coast time – the beaches at Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! are about a 45-minute drive from Lakemoor.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (11.9 miles)
  • Castle Drogo (14.1 miles)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (19.2 miles)
