Lakemoor: The Cabin in its secluded corner

General

  • Family-run Devon smallholding with eco-friendly amenities
  • Exmoor Zoo, Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! within 45 minutes' drive
  • Beach area on the River Taw for swims, canoes and paddleboards

A little slice of heaven in Devon, say the owners… and it’s pretty easy to see why. Lakemoor’s location is indeed rather dreamy, on the banks of the River Taw (with a beach area giving access for swims, paddles and launching kayaks or paddleboards) and with a lake thrown in for good measure too.

This is a family-run smallholding spread over five acres, which you’ll share with the resident goats, geese, pigs and chickens. There’s plenty of ground to go around though, so you’ll have ample space for things like games, campfires (in the firepits provided, please), barbecues and generally scampering about in the open air.

Now, if you lived in a place like this you’d want to do your best to preserve it as it should be, right? And so it is with the Lakemoor team too: this is an eco-friendly place with compost toilets, recycling and solar lighting, plus pick-ups for those travelling by public transport (Eggesford railway station is a couple of minutes’ drive away).

Despite its rural outlook, this is a site that’s surprisingly easy to access, as it’s just off the A377 Exeter to Barnstaple road (and a little over half an hour’s drive from both). Local settlements are somewhat smaller, but guests have access to a village shop, pub and curry house in the villages of Chawleigh and Chumleigh (both about five minutes’ drive away).

Please note

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Reception is unmanned after 8 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

A really lovely overnight stay with my 5 year old son. Well maintained & beautiful site with excellent facilities including a small honesty shop. Pitched next to the lovely River Taw where you can paddle & kayak. Abundant wildlife including Kingfishers & Bats. A lovely smallholding where my son helped feed the pigs & goats. Chickens & geese roam too. Thank you Claire & Justin for being so accommodating. We had a great time! Will definitely be back.

Perfect site for a chilled break with my 14 year old son. Friendly owners that make you feel welcome. Great fire pits and they managed to find us some Marshmallows for my son. The showers are amazing. It's rare that you get HOT 🔥 showers at sites but these were lovely. Clean and tidy facilities.

Lovely farm animals except the Chicken that hunts for food and stole our loaf of bread BUT this is down to other campers feeding it. This is not a negative just don't feed the chicken lol.

Westward Ho a 45 min drive which isn't to bad and a lovely beach. Small town 5 min drive or 20 min cycle up hill for a pub. There are 2 pubs equal distance but the Red Lion has less steeper hill so if you're cycling try this pub.

No WiFi. You have a signal but drops out from time to time. Still managed to watch the football so all good

All in all 5 stars for me. I will return for sure.

    Thanks Lakemoor.

The river at the bottom of the site. Even though it was very low, due to no rain for a long time, was still nice to pop down and have a paddle. Saw 2 kingfishers and lots of fish, enjoyed being allowed a fire pit to sit at and read. The duration of my stay I didn’t turn the TV on once in my caravan, I just enjoyed the quietness and reading.

    Disliked:

The road noise from where the pitches for caravans were, the tent pitches were the best, not a sound except the flow of the river! The wandering chicken was a bit of a pest. Kept trying to pinch my dogs food and get in my caravan.
The beaches were about a 40 minute drive away.
The nearest supermarket was about a 20 minute drive to a small sainsburys, or a 30 minute drive to Aldi & McDonald’s.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback and sharing your photos, we are glad you were able to relax and enjoy some quiet time. Sorry Chicken bothered you, she has been spoilt this summer by previous guests!

If following your sat nav from Exeter it will take you to Ford Moor; please continue to the following left instead.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

Time out in the open air here can be spent playing golf (there’s an 18-hole course five minutes away in Chumleigh), taking walks through the hundred-year old Eggesford Forest (five minutes’ drive) or tackling the Tarka Trail by bike – the UK’s longest off-road cycle trail passes handily close to the site.

There’s no fishing in the river on site, so if you want to give your angling kit some action, you’ll need to head to Stafford Moor Fishery (15 minutes). If you’d rather head inside for some watery activity, there’s a pool in South Molton (20 minutes) – while you’re here, pay a visit to the Quince Honey Farm for beekeeping demonstrations and a great soft play area.

To meet bigger creatures, take yourselves to Watertown Llamas (10 minutes) or choose something a bit more exotic with an outing to Exmoor Zoo (40 minutes). Or of course you could swap countryside time for coast time – the beaches at Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! are about a 45-minute drive from Lakemoor.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (11.9 miles)
  • Castle Drogo (14.1 miles)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (19.2 miles)
