Boho glamping accommodation on an 18-acre farm, anyone? North Thorne Glamping has an enviable setting next to Wistlandpound Reservoir, on the edge of Exmoor National Park and close to North Devon beaches. This stylish, family-run site is set in secluded and peaceful pasture and has spectacular views over Devon’s hills, reaching from Exmoor to Dartmoor. There is a natural pond in the centre of the field where ducks and geese splash around, and it’s south-facing so you feel the benefits of long, light (and hopefully sunny) days as well as incredible star-filled night skies. Each unit is decked out with a comfy double bed and 2/4 singles, and they’re all decorated in shabby-chic style. There’s a private dining area outside, with vintage crockery and cutlery, a gas cooker and seating, as well as a barbecue so you can cook up al fresco meals and chill around the campfire. First bonus: you have a private and individually styled shower room in the facilities barn, where you’ll also find a communal kitchen. Second bonus: you can challenge the family to matches on the tennis court, and a second repurposed barn has a hang-out area for you to get together over table tennis and super-size traditional games like Jenga if the weather turns sour. Third (and not one you read often) bonus: most mornings, you’ll hear the sounds of jungle chatter, and no, you’re not mad. Exmoor Zoo is a few fields away and the monkeys, gibbons and baboons like to give you a wake-up call.

Emperor bell tent (no pets)

Liked: Very well thought out - amazing attention to detail Spacious- only 6 tents and a small horse box in the field Close to the barn with access to toaster and electric kettle, charging points and sinks. Private fridge and bathroom Really friendly hosts - great breakfast recommendation! (Charlie Fridays at Lynmouth)

Disliked: Cooking was tricky in the wind. Not sure there’s much you could have done about it as the burner was shielded in three directions.

From the manager: Glad you enjoyed your stay, Charlie Friday's is certainly worth a visit. We will look at how to shield the cookers better from the wind.

Lovely site with clean facilities, friendly staff.

Emperor bell tent (no pets)

Liked: Own fridge, toilet/shower with own key. Kids loved the play barn All cutlery, plates, cups etc all there on your pitch for you to use. BBQ and has two burner hob. Kettle and toaster in barn to use as this was quicker than using kettle on stove Nice location but shops a 20 mins drive, so don’t forget provisions on your first night if you are arriving late as no shop on site. There are cows in the next field which didn’t bother us but they are loud first thing, take ear plugs.

Disliked: No electric in the bell tents. I’ve tried to find where it says it on the listing but it doesn’t. You can charge your phone etc in the barns, but they are a walk away. On a hill so when the wind comes it’s really windy. We went in august and the wind was terrible (can’t help nature) so it became really cold at night. Quite a walk to the toilets from the tents if you are at the bottom of the field, up a slope (definitely got our steps in) No site shop. I feel it would benefit from this especially as the shops are not very close. Even just the basics maybe? No Wifi

From the manager: Thanks for your comments. We don't list electrics in our tents but do state that there is electric in the barn for phone charge etc. There is an ariel photo on our listing showing the site and how spaced out things are, we feel people love the amount of space we offer. The onsite shop is a work in progress and will be available in 2023. We supply extra blankets if required, you just need to ask. Unfortunately we are unable to offer wifi and our listing does indicate this.

Bluebell Horsebox static caravan (pet friendly)

Liked: Wow! The converted horse box was stunning, so comfortable. The kids and I adored it. Beds we incredibly comfortable and all bedding was supplied even mattress toppers. The site was peaceful and clean and very well equipped. You own have you own proper bathroom with a key so you don’t have to walk back and forth with all your stuff! Full size fridge, kettle , toaster in the barn with power points and sofas and the barn next door is the game barn table tennis, connect 4 , badminton outside! The kids absolutely loved it. The hosts Sarah and her family are lovely and give you a lovely friendly tour and on hand if you need any help!

Disliked: Nothing!!

Bell tent

Liked: North Thorne was absolutely beautiful. My 6 & 9 year old boys were asking when we could go back as we were leaving, they loved all the space to run around, feeding the Goats and exploring the pond. Having a personal bathroom was lovely as you could leave stuff in there instead of having to carry stuff back and forth from the tent. The stars at night were spectacular. Sarah and Andrew were incredibly friendly and helpful and recommended some great places to eat and visit.
