North Thorne Glamping: Bell tent Jasmine overlooking the pond

General

  • High-end glamping on the edge of Exmoor National Park in North Devon
  • Exmoor Zoo a 10-minute drive; less than 40 minutes to surfing beaches
  • Bell tents with private dining areas, shared kitchen and hangout barn

Boho glamping accommodation on an 18-acre farm, anyone? North Thorne Glamping has an enviable setting next to Wistlandpound Reservoir, on the edge of Exmoor National Park and close to North Devon beaches.

This stylish, family-run site is set in secluded and peaceful pasture and has spectacular views over Devon’s hills, reaching from Exmoor to Dartmoor. There is a natural pond in the centre of the field where ducks and geese splash around, and it’s south-facing so you feel the benefits of long, light (and hopefully sunny) days as well as incredible star-filled night skies.

Each tent is decked out with a comfy double bed and 2/4 singles, and they’re all decorated in shabby-chic style. There’s a private dining area outside, with vintage crockery and cutlery, a gas cooker and seating, as well as a barbecue so you can cook up al fresco meals and chill around the campfire.

First bonus: you have a private and individually styled shower room in the facilities barn, where you’ll also find a communal kitchen.

Second bonus: you can challenge the family to matches on the tennis court, and a second repurposed barn has a hang-out area for you to get together over table tennis and super-size traditional games like Jenga if the weather turns sour.

Third (and not one you read often) bonus: most mornings, you’ll hear the sounds of jungle chatter, and no, you’re not mad. Exmoor Zoo is a few fields away and the monkeys, gibbons and baboons like to give you a wake-up call.

Lovely interior to the tent. Nice setting. Tents were spaced out well. Good that there was a blanket and bonfire too. Lovely to have own allocated shower and toilet and showers were always nice and warm. The barn with the fridges had a nice feel. Hosts were lovely and very welcoming and came to chat to us and check on how things were going regularly. Close to Woolacoombe, coombe Martin.

    Disliked:

Could really do with a tumble drier as when the towels get damp and it isn't really sunny, it's hard to get them dry hanging them outside. Would be happy to pay for a coin operated one.

Beautiful surroundings. Great bell tent which suited us (2 adults and two 14 year olds). One night was a storm, and the owners took great care in checking the tent was sturdy, which it was, All cooking supplies were helpfully provided, as was kindling & wood for the fire pit. Great for night time barbecues. We also enjoyed the games on offer (ping pong table, tennis).
Sarah had baked us a lovely cake on arrival.
New themed toilets and shower block with our own key for sole use. Showers were always hot. Electricity sockets were also accessible in the same block, as was a kettle and fridges. A memorable stay which we all enjoyed.

    Disliked:

The toilets / shower block were a short walk away (less than a minute), so we were glad to have taken our light with us for night time toilet visits.
The nearest supermarket is a 15-20 minute car ride away. Picking up supplies before arriving is a good idea. There is a farm shop which is in walking distance but worth checking opening times as it was closed on Mondays when we visited.
No car parking next to bell tent - a wheelbarrow is helpfully provided!
No / very little wifi signal.

We stayed in the horse box "Blubell" and absolutely loved it, it is cosy and the space has been well thought out. The hosts Sarah and Andrew are very friendly and helpful, and have worked hard to create a beautiful site, but one of the best features is that they haven't packed lots of tents in, so the site has the perfect amount of people on it, a rare find! We had our own themed bathroom which was really nice, just outside the bathroom there are mirrors with sockets next to them for hair drying, which is fab. We also had exclusive use of a fridge within the barn to store our essentials, there is one available for each accommodation which is a great idea. Children are well catered for here with a barn full of games and toys for them to use, as well as some goats and chickens to have a look at on site, a pond and a tennis court. Wood for fires is available to purchase on site and is very reasonably priced, as well as things which you can borrow (lighters, electric lights, tin openers and other things.) The location of the site is great too, Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Croyde around 25/30 minutes away which we loved. This is easily the best glampsite we have stayed at, with the most beautiful views and peaceful surroundings, we are looking forward to going again!
