  • Comfy converted yacht in a Devon cider orchard with Exmoor views
  • Half an hour's drive to Westward Ho! beach and South West Coast Path
  • Stargazing hatch and firepit; fresh bread and firewood supplied
Ahoy there, me hearties… and other nautical phrases you can roar in an accent that sounds half-Devon and half-pirate… sail forth for a splendid maritime stay on a converted yacht, snuggled into a cider orchard just over a mile from Umberleigh and with views over Exmoor. Now some way from the briny, the former sailing boat Sea Spray is on land at Lemons Farm Glamping, and decked out for happy holidays rather than high seas. On board, crew members sleep in a comfy triangular bed (better than the hammocks of yore for sure) with a hatch above for gazing up at the night skies. Packs of cards, board games, blankets and cushions make the little living area lovable and outside there's a firepit for cooking and evenings of stargazing and lazing. The team behind this brill bolthole will supply you with wood and kindling (bring your own charcoal for barbecuing) and even fit you up with fresh baked bread and flowers from their garden. They're friendly to the planet too, with every effort taken to use renewable and sustainable sources: hot outdoor showers (with views) are housed in a hut of recycled wood and the sun's rays power the indoor lighting and the coolbox in the camp kitchen, where you can cook up a storm (or just a snack) on the gas hob.

Local attractions

Vital (and victual) business first: there's a pub with food five minutes' drive away and plenty more of them, plus shops and supermarkets, in Barnstaple (15 minutes' drive). With supplies sorted, hit the beaches of Westward Ho! and Woolacombe (half an hour and 40 minutes respectively) for surfing, sandcastle building and burying your siblings in the sand. If you're into walks, the former's beach links up with the mighty South West Coast Path, though you're under no obligation to do all 630 miles of it… Equally popular with walkers and cyclists, the Tarka Trail passes through 32 miles of the Taw estuary, hitting many of the wildlife-heavy spots featured in Henry Williamson's 1927 novel. Join it at Torrington (20 minutes) or, like the famed otter, fish the Taw yourself (enquire at the High Bullen Hotel in Chittlehamholt, 15 minutes from the site). For more energetic pursuits, the rides at The Milky Way Adventure Park launch you into space screaming and the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Bideford has the whole spread from kayaking and laser tag to an assault course, surf school and Nerf arena. Both are within half an hour's drive. If you fancy some calm after that, make for Ilfracombe (40 minutes) for rides over the waves to the bird-thronged wilderness of Lundy Island.
