  • Peaceful nearly wild camping on an organic farm in rural Mid Devon
  • Wildwood Devon 45 minutes’ drive; Exmoor National Park half an hour
  • Spacious pitches in wildflower meadows; firepits and wood available
So you want to truly get away from it all? How about an almost-wild camping experience deep in Devon countryside? With no background noise or light pollution, Middle Ruckham Camping is a peaceful spot to consider for couples’ escapes (with woodland walks and pitches among the trees) and family adventures (think streams for splashing in, rope swings and woodland den building). Set on an organic farm amid 48 acres of woodland and fields, the camping meadow has spectacular views over rural Devon. Quiet it may be, but it’s not too remote, as the site is 15 minutes’ drive from the shops and pubs of Tiverton. There are no organised pitches, so you can turn up and choose where in the meadow (which is filled with wildflowers in summer) you’d like to be. There’s a communal campfire, but if you prefer to stay in seclusion away from everyone else, you can hire firepits (wood is also available for small charge) from the site owners and do your own thing completely. There are lots of secret spots among the trees for hanging hammocks and chilling out too. A few bits and bobs to note: simple on-site amenities include compost toilets and a wood-fired alfresco bath, and there is no electricity available. To avoid damaging the habitat, please leave your car in the parking area and use the wheelbarrows supplied to lug your gear to the pitch. Travelling sustainably? You’ll only be 20 minutes’ walk from the nearest bus stop, so using public transport is a handy option.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (wild)

Liked: If you’re looking for a remote getaway this is exactly what you are looking for, the site location is just stunning with a mix of woods and rolling meadows. The amenities are basic but everything you need and more we loved it!! A short walk down the road is a local pub serving nice real ale and standard fair food very reasonably priced. I can’t recommend the campsite highly enough and I don’t do these sort of reviews! Everything was perfect from the staff and owners friendly and helpful to the delights of the sights and sounds nature! Dropping off to sleep with to hoots of the owls was bliss! Will be coming back again.!!!

Local attractions

If you’re travelling with kids, there’s lots to keep everyone happy. You can all get busy racing go karts and learning how to drive earth-moving equipment at Diggerland Devon (25 minutes’ drive), or watch elegant raptors in full flight at Yarak Birds of Prey (35 minutes). See endangered animals including wolves and European wild cats at Wildwood Devon (45 minutes), while cute donkeys are waiting to be fed (and cuddled) at The Donkey Sanctuary (55 minutes). For romantic days out on foot, follow the course of the Grand Western Canal from Tiverton (15 minutes), or head for the moorland and forests of Exmoor National Park (half an hour) and stroll along the River Barle to the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (45 minutes). Combine your walks with a bit of culture by wandering around the formal gardens at National Trust-owned Knightshayes Court (20 minutes), and follow it up with a tour of the Victorian mansion’s Gothic-style interior. To learn more about Devon’s rural heritage, see the antique farming implements and lace-making displays at Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life (15 minutes).
