  • Eco-friendly glampsite powered by solar energy on a working farm
Keen on a bit (or actually, rather a lot) of luxury on your holiday under canvas? Form an orderly queue please, as you head to Exe Valley Glamping in Devon, where spacious safari tents adorn a hilltop on a 150-acre family farm five minutes’ drive from Tiverton. The glampsite is run by father-and-son team Robin and Patrick, who wanted to diversify their farm while promoting sustainable tourism. Each tent is purpose-built to ensure that your glamping stay is fuss-free and easy, so you can truly relax and unwind. They’re eco-conscious too, being powered by solar energy and heated by wood sustainably collected through careful woodland management. Park up on arrival and follow the forest trail (it’s five minutes’ walk) to your canvas hideaway, where everything has been thought of for your stay, from crockery and cutlery in the fully equipped kitchen and quality linens on the beds to the smallest detail like candles for outdoor dining and board games to keep the kids cheerful. Kit for babies and for dogs is also available on request. You can pick up all manner of goodies from dairies, farm shops and convenience stores within 15 minutes’ drive, and if you fancy a day away from the self-catering lark, there are several pubs and restaurants within a 20-minute radius.

Local attractions

If you’re on a family staycation, take the kids to get good and muddy on The Bear Trail obstacle course (20 minutes’ drive), or test your head for heights on treetop ropes at Go Ape Haldon Forest (40 minutes). With a pirate boat to board and a beach especially for toddlers, River Dart Country Park (55 minutes) is a handy spot for families with younger kids. You can have a good march on the coastal Exe Estuary Trail between Exmouth (45 minutes) and Dawlish (50 minutes), or stroll along the scenic River Barle to the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (45 minutes), where there’s a handy pitstop for coffee or beer at the popular pub overlooking the river. When a relaxing day at the beach is suggested after all that activity, seemingly endless Saunton Sands is backed by dunes for dog walks and has consistent waves for surfers, while Woolacombe (both around an hour) has plenty of family amenities including an amusement arcade and seaside cafés. Shingle beaches on Devon’s east coast include Budleigh Salterton (50 minutes), good for boogie boarding and safe swimming in the Lower Otter Estuary.
