Cutting the grass at the site

  • Farm site 10 minutes' drive away from Tiverton, Devon
  • Knightshayes Court 20 minutes’ drive; Exeter 25 minutes
  • Direct access to the River Exe; a five-minute drive to the nearest pub
A sprawling expanse of grass stretching between the A396 and the River Exe is the setting for Barton Fields Campsite. Families (and their four-legged companions) are welcome at this peaceful spot on a farm near the market town of Tiverton (10 minutes’ drive), in the heart of Devon. Although this pop-up site has few amenities (for which read portable toilets), it has nice, level pitches and expansive views of tree-covered hills all around. Guests here also have direct access to the River Exe, which flows along the boundary of the farm. If you’re itching to lace up your hiking boots, you’re in the right place, with two national parks (Exmoor and Dartmoor) and two National Landscapes (Blackdown Hills and East Devon) within an hour’s drive. The nearest is Exmoor National Park (half an hour), with expansive moorland, woodland and a cliff-fringed coastline. If walking along the sea is your thing, plenty more waterfront trails await at the East Devon National Landscaepe (50 minutes), which includes stretches of the Jurassic Coast. At Seaton (one hour), the kids can explore rock pools and hunt for fossils while you relax on the beach; if you have your binoculars, it’s worth taking a detour to Seaton Wetlands, where you might see ducks and kingfishers. Back at the site, you can fire up the barbecue for dinner, or head to the pub for a traditional home-cooked meal; the nearest watering hole is just over a mile away, in Bickleigh (less than five minutes by car).

What customers say

This peaceful, spacious campsite is praised for its friendly owners and well-maintained, clean basic facilities including hot showers and toilets. Campfires are allowed, and guests appreciate the relaxed atmosphere, level pitches, and natural surroundings near a river. Some visitors noted the entrance can be hard to spot, and a few mentioned basic lighting in the shower block, with one comment suggesting improvements are imminent. Road noise is generally not an issue, though one reviewer found it disruptive. Overall, it's considered excellent value.

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Clean toilets and shower

Disliked Unfortunately there were no other campers and as a solo camper I felt a little valuable in an empty field, I had booked 2 nights but decided to not stay the next night. It is more of a one night stop over very basic site and I did feel it was a little overpriced. Road didn't both me but you can hear it.

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked The view across to the woods

Disliked I thought the campsite overpriced as there was only a toilet and no other facilities. No outside tap and no shower. The field is right next to a main road so was quite noisy from an early hour. I didn't stay the second night.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback.

We would just like to clarify that the campsite does provide two toilets, a hot-water shower, and an outside tap for guests’ use. We’re sorry if this was not clear during your visit.

Regarding the road, it is generally not an issue for most guests as the field is well separated by a large bank, hedge, and trees which usually provide a good buffer from noise.

Unfortunately, you were also visiting towards the end of our camping season and experienced some unsettled weather, which may have impacted your stay.

We’re sorry that your experience did not meet expectations.

Very basic, but perfect for a quiet, one-night getaway.

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked We stayed one night as a stopover on our trip down to Corwall. It's a large, quiet site with plenty of opportunities to find your preferred spot. It's a farmer's field with no allocated spots or pitches. It has a clean-water tap, toilet & shower portacabin, which also houses table and chairs for kids to use. Lovely little river nearby which had the occasional heron flying by.
