  • Farm site 10 minutes' drive away from Tiverton, Devon
  • Knightshayes Court 20 minutes’ drive; Exeter 25 minutes
  • Direct access to the River Exe; a five-minute drive to the nearest pub
A sprawling expanse of grass stretching between the A396 and the River Exe is the setting for Barton Fields Campsite. Families (and their four-legged companions) are welcome at this peaceful spot on a farm near the market town of Tiverton (10 minutes’ drive), in the heart of Devon. Although this pop-up site has few amenities (for which read portable toilets), it has nice, level pitches and expansive views of tree-covered hills all around. Guests here also have direct access to the River Exe, which flows along the boundary of the farm. If you’re itching to lace up your hiking boots, you’re in the right place, with two national parks (Exmoor and Dartmoor) and two areas of outstanding natural beauty (Blackdown Hills and East Devon) within an hour’s drive. The nearest is Exmoor National Park (half an hour), with expansive moorland, woodland and a cliff-fringed coastline. If walking along the sea is your thing, plenty more waterfront trails await at the East Devon AONB (50 minutes), which includes stretches of the Jurassic Coast. At Seaton (one hour), the kids can explore rock pools and hunt for fossils while you relax on the beach; if you have your binoculars, it’s worth taking a detour to Seaton Wetlands, where you might see ducks and kingfishers. Back at the site, you can fire up the barbecue for dinner, or head to the pub for a traditional home-cooked meal; the nearest watering hole is just over a mile away, in Bickleigh (less than five minutes by car).

Liked: The riverside setting was amazing! Easy drive into Tiverton to pick up supplies. Owner really friendly and approachable. Grassy but not too muddy given the wet summer we’ve all endured.

Liked: Stayed here for a weekend to get some peace and quiet from noisy neighbours and we weren’t disappointed…. A nice well kept field and a very readable price . Personally we didn’t notice any road noise and the wildlife was an added bonus , we saw the squirrels playing in the trees and herons on the river . The shower was lovely and hot and even a sink with hot water and mirror to have a shave 👍. On-site toilet and drinking water also available and the owners were very friendly and were there daily to make sure that everyone was ok as well as to clean the facilities ( which were kept spotless ). Would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful few days or just an overnight stop. Hopefully this campsite will extend its opening as it really is amazing and we would love to return again.

Liked: We booked last minute for one night and stayed two! Level pitches, well maintained, nice simple facilities in cabin and portaloo. Lovely location with picturesque tree lines and hills alongside the river which the dogs enjoyed a paddle in. Plenty of room for our son to ride his bike. Friendly and helpful owners. Lovely site 🙂
