  • Hilltop grass pitches with outstanding Exmoor National Park views
  • A 30-minute drive to Exmoor Zoo; the South West Coast Path 40 minutes
  • Close to major cycle routes, an ancient monument, pubs and shops
West Twitchen Ball Farm is set high on the southern hills of Exmoor National Park, with striking moorland views also looking over parts of Devon and Dartmoor. This is one for animal lovers as it’s on a family-run beef and sheep farm, with a herd of Aberdeen Angus and Hereford cows, plus 400 sheep and lambs, a few goats and a horse. The hilltop camping field is alive with song birds, buzzards, kites and owls (watch out for them at dusk), and sheltered by ancient oak woodland that harbour the red deer you may get to see flitting around. The farm is also in a dark-sky reserve, so you can enjoy pure air and sparkling stars on clear nights – no need even to bring a telescope. National Cycle Route 3 – heading from Land’s End to John O’Groats – is very close by, as is the Two Moors Way, Devon’s coast-to-coast walk, where you can see Exmoor ponies roaming free. The ancient Tarr Steps clapper bridge crosses the Barle river in a lovely wooded valley criss-crossed with walking trails, and there’s golf and surfing close by too. The delightful town of Dulverton (25 minutes) is packed with indie shops and posh delis, and if you want to cook, you can hire barbecues from the site owner – and if not – no problem. There are plenty of traditional pubs serving quality food and local ciders to keep you fed and watered.
