  • Peaceful, rural and hidden-away site on 68 acres of woodland
  • Campfires encouraged; cosy pub 10 minutes' walk away
  • Toilets, hot showers, laundry room and communal fire area
Have a secluded and hidden away stay at peaceful and rural Ashbourne Woods near South Brent in Devon, in a range of accommodation to suit all outdoor holiday sorts. The site is set on 68 acres of woodland set around a growing forest with accommodation areas carefully laid out by the helpful and friendly owners, and is a mere 10-minute stroll from a cosy and rather fab eleventh-century pub. And as befits a rural and tucked away site such as this, campfires are encouraged here, so bring along the sausages and marshmallows for toasty evenings under the Devon stars… Ashbourne's main camping area has a shared fridge for essentials and a communal fire area, as well as water facilities, toilets, hot showers and a laundry/washing up area with hot and cold water and coin-operated washing and drying machines. Pups are barking up the right tree at Ashbourne Woods too – they’re welcome across the site and accommodation types, and the two and a half miles of dog-walking tracks nearby will make a stay for pooches here anything but ruff.

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked You could camp as wild as you liked here , or pitch near to facilities- up to you. All pitches seemed to have individual water supply and fire pit for hire. An amazing place for children to run around and enjoy nature. There were many facilities for campers such as undercover eating areas, fridge/freezer, microwave, undercover washing up and charging points.

Disliked nothing- plenty of toilets / showers weren’t plush but perfectly functional

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked The campsite is beautiful, really nicely kept and really peaceful vibe

Disliked Our pitch was a bit too close to the main BBQ and buildings, it was noisy. That said, we booked very late and the other pitches further away were all lovely

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re really pleased you found the site beautiful and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere overall.

We’re sorry your pitch felt a little close to the fire pit area. During the fire ban, the BBQ/fire fit space was provided so guests could still cook safely on a gravel surface, which meant it was used more frequently than usual. As you mentioned, booking very late in the school holidays does mean the quieter pitches further away are often already taken.

We’re glad you liked the other pitches and hope that on a future visit you’ll be able to choose one of the spots further from the communal areas.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked Easy access to facilities
Hot showers
Nice family environment

Disliked Shower did not run consistently
Advertised as “Wild camping” but has a TV consistently on - showing Far right political misinformation on GB News.
Pitches are uniform so if you are looking for something more wild this is not the place to go.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that parts of your stay didn’t meet your expectations.

We have made note of your comment regarding the shower.

To clarify, the TV in the communal area is on a timer and only runs for short periods. It is normally set to sport, and if a programme ends, we don’t control what automatically follows. We do not intentionally put on political content of any kind.

Regarding the pitches, our electric pitches are uniform because they need to be laid out safely for power access. However, our wild camping areas in the woods are completely different — natural, varied, and far from the TV or any facilities.

We appreciate you sharing your thoughts and will continue to review how we balance comfort with the wild‑camping experience many guests enjoy.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked I love everything about Ashbourne Woods. This was my tenth year and I’ll definitely be staying next year! Green and beautiful surroundings, stunning trees, no light pollution so if you’re lucky you’ll see a shooting star on your way to the loo! Toilets and showers immaculately clean. Always hot water 24/7. friendly staff and the campers chat to each other and it’s lovely and fuzzy and warm vibes all around. Always a space in the car park, not a speck of litter, rabbits jumping about in the ferns and I even saw a hedgehog when I was zipping up my tent. It’s just a really happy calm and beautiful space. Thank you all!

Non-electric gravel and earth campervan pitch (woodland)

Liked Beautiful location. Woodland was lovely, nice pitches and facilities - freezer, fridge, microwave and kettle nice touch and covered area with seating. Walk to local pub delightful. Helpful staff.

Disliked Compost loo in the Campervan pitches had no sawdust or working lock.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely comments about the woodland, facilities and staff — we’re really pleased you enjoyed your stay.

Regarding the compost loo, we monitor the sawdust levels and top up as needed, but during busy periods it can run low more quickly. We’ve adjusted how we manage it to make sure it stays available and the loo remains in good working order.

Thank you for letting us know — feedback like this helps us keep everything running smoothly.

Liked Lovely campsite. Good toilets and super clean showers. The campsite has a really nice feel to it.
Perfectly located off the a38 without being able to hear it, meaning it’s super handy for places to visit

Disliked Only little dislike is that the showers could have a little longer when you push the button , 4 seconds isn’t enough.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely comments — we’re really pleased you enjoyed the campsite, the facilities and the peaceful feel of the place.

Regarding the shower button, it does have a short cycle as part of the water‑saving system we use on site. We understand it can feel brief, but guests can press the button as often as needed during their shower.

Thanks again for your feedback and for staying with us.

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked We had a lovely stay at Ashbourne Woods. The manager was friendly and helpful, but a special mention has to go to Sharon on reception. She was so warm, welcoming and genuinely went the extra mile for everyone – even helping people out on her day off. She really is a credit to the campsite.

We also loved the communal field in the evenings. The kids quickly made friends, building dens, throwing “pine cone grenades” and toasting marshmallows, which naturally got the adults chatting too. A really friendly, relaxed campsite with a great atmosphere. We’d definitely return.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback. We’re delighted you had such a lovely stay and really appreciate your kind words about the team — especially Sharon. She’ll be thrilled to hear your comments.

It’s great to know you enjoyed the communal field in the evenings and that the children (and adults!) had such a fun, relaxed time together. Creating that friendly atmosphere is something we care about, so it’s lovely to hear it made your stay special.

We’d be very happy to welcome you back again.

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked We were recommended this campsite so we decided to give it a go. The tent camping looked really nice, with spaces on a grassy patch or amongst the trees. However, the motorhome and caravan pitches were not so nice.

Disliked I know this is woodland camping, but staring out at high density pine trees in a dark and dingy gravel pitch, surrounded by nettles and brambles is not my idea of fun.
The push button showers were too high so the limited jet of water splayed out too far. The walk around the plantation was ok, but nothing special. Expensive for what you got.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback and for staying with us. We’re pleased you enjoyed the tent areas and the atmosphere on site.

You booked one of our optional electric gravel pitches, which are designed for motorhomes and campervans and are located alongside the forest. Parking within the woodland itself isn’t permitted for safety reasons, and the wild pitches in the woods are only suitable for tents. An alternative option within our wild campervan area was offered at the time, but you chose to remain on your original electric pitch.

We appreciate your comments and hope this helps future guests choose the area of the site that best suits their style of camping.

Tucked away needn’t mean being stuck for things to do… Set in the South Hams on the south coast of Devon, the campsite is just off the accessible A38, 10 miles from the sea and less than a mile from Dartmoor National Park. Half an hour’s drive away is Compton Castle, a manor with orchard-filled gardens for apple-y ambling around, while the National Trust’s Church House on Dartmoor is just over a 20-minute drive north. For active types, horse riding and sailing can also be jumped upon around Dartmoor and on the coast. Cast a line to Hatchlands Trout Farm, just ten minutes by car, for fly fishing on the well-stocked rainbow trout lake, or try the coarse fishing also available in the surrounding areas: ask the Ashbourne Woods team to point you and your rod in the right direction. As well as the nearby beaches to treat and tire out, day trips to keep little holidaymakers happy also include Pennywell Farm (less than five minutes away) where animal fans can snuggle the pigs, collect eggs, help feed the lambs and even try their hand at milking the goats; Woodland Family Theme Park for daredevil youngsters (just 30 minutes away), with rides, falconry display and zoo farm, and Staverton Steam Railway, the first choo-choo-choice for little locomotive fans.
