  • Well-maintained wild camping field on a golf course in rural Devon
  • A 10-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast, Branscombe and Sidmouth
  • Golf and snacks on site; beaches, coastal hikes, pubs and shops nearby
Thorn Campsite is a secluded spot in Devon countryside, near Jurassic Coast beaches and seaside resorts – and here’s the thing – it comes with its very own golf course. Yes, golfers pack your clubs and come to enjoy a few rounds on a nine-hole rural course. The flat and neatly manicured camping field has electric hook-ups, loos, a washing-up area and showers, and it’s just a short stroll from the golf course. The clubhouse cleverly doubles as a snack bar with additional loos and showers for site guests, and there’s a wifi connection if you need to keep friends informed of your golfing successes. But it’s not just about the golfing. Families, couples and dogs are also welcome at Thorn, as there’s plenty hereabouts to keep everyone entertained. Take the kids rummaging for fossils along the Jurassic Coast (10 minutes’ drive), and if they have behaved really, really well, the best treat ever is feeding time at The Donkey Sanctuary (five minutes). You can choose from an abundance of lovely beaches along the coastline (Salcombe Regis and Seaton to name just two – both less than 15 minutes’ drive), and the South West Coast Path (10 minutes) reveals swathes of rugged headlands for long-distance hikers. Sidmouth supermarkets will keep you fed and watered, and if you want a night off from cooking, there are traditional pubs in Branscombe (10 minutes) and a whole host of restaurants in Budleigh Salterton (25 minutes).

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Loads of space for the children to play. Option to play crazy golf. Very friendly and helpful service from the site manager. Dogs allowed. Check in and check out time was anytime which made this very easy for us and not in a rush to pack up. The ground was flat where you pitched which was great! Electric hook up and water was right next to pitch. Very quiet site - not sure if it would be busy in high season. Close to Sidmouth town, donkey sanctuary etc so ideal for families to have lots to do.

Disliked: If it was busy (we were the only ones there!), there would not be enough facilities, facilities were quite basic (enough for us this time though). Only one of the ladies showers was hot (which was fine cause we were the only ones there). Toilet block was very far away from our pitch which was not great with little ones. There was a toilet and shower closer to our tent but it was disgusting so couldn’t use it, and toilet didn’t flush properly. No hot water for washing dishes in the washing up area. There was no tissue to dry hands in the toilet block. It was end of season so I imagine that tissue etc and cleaning etc would be monitored more often in high season. Depends what your priorities are when camping, I’ve defo had worse facilities but I prefer facilities to be nicer, cleaner, more available and closer to pitches.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: The hosts are what make this campsite so special - Malcolm & Jewel went out of their way to help us and make our stay comfortable after walking from Exmouth. Nice large campsite on and around the golf course. Facilities were clean and hot showers plus washing up facilities. Didn’t get hit by any golf balls!

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Great site located a few minutes from the donkey sanctuary so you can often hear the donkeys which was actually really cute. There's loads of space available and each pitch is generous. The owner was great, really helpful too when we needed it. Loved that we could arrive and leave at any time so no time worries. It was really quiet with great neighbours on the other pitches although not many kids. Please note the negatives weren't enough to put us off, just worth noting for prospective people looking to stay.

Disliked: The pitches are around the edge of the actual golf course. One of the holes was feet from our pitch and we kept finding golf balls next to our car. The site entrance /exit is just a side bit of the hedge where anyone can come in as its completely unmanned. The small toilet was pretty much unusable especially for kids, I got stuck in there the first time I went in with it being pitch black despite it being the middle of a sunny day it was also just a little tin toilet. The main toilet block was absolutely fine however was across the whole golf course so don't leave it to the last minute if you need the loo and expect wet feet during the night/morning. Lastly bring your own toilet roll as its not mentioned in the emails etc but is not provided.
