Court Gates Wild Camping: Camping field at Court Gates

General

  • South Devon working farm with sea views and stabling for horses
  • A 15-minute drive from Plymouth and 20 minutes from Dartmoor
  • Direct access to South West Coast Path; a mile from Bovisand beach

Countryside, coast and city – it’s quite the mix of attractions at Court Gates Wild Camping, a peaceful site at a working farm within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Two of the above are very easily accessible from the site, which looks out over the Dartmoor National Park on one side and the sea on the other. In fact, the coast is close enough to walk to – there’s direct access to the South West Coast Path, and you can follow a footpath that will get you to Bovisand beach in around 20 minutes.

Setting off on foot can also get you to the local pub, shops and garage, all of which are about 20 minutes’ walk away (or five minutes in the car). A couple more pubs are within a few minutes’ drive too, although it’s quite possible you’ll be tempted to stick around on the farm to look out to sea, play games and fire up a barbecue (which are allowed as long as you keep them off the ground to avoid burning the grass).

And what of the aforementioned city? That’s the coastal settlement of Plymouth, 15 minutes’ drive away and packed with things to see and do (plus places to eat and drink…)

Those bringing animals along on holiday can be catered for at Court Gates: well-behaved dogs are welcome, and there’s stabling available at the farm’s livery for horses too.

The setup here isn’t in fact entirely wild camping – guests will have access to toilets and running water, but there are no showers.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

I absolutely love this camping spot! Great views, really quiet, a 25 min walk to beach! Breakfast delivered to your van is a really nice touch (£6, order by 6:00PM the night before.) It was absolutely delicious!

To get to the beach go through the gate at the bottom of the field and turn left. When you get the to end of the road take a right down on to the path. It's a lovely walk.

There is no check in, you just follow the signs and find a spot on the field. There's a porta loo, water and a rubbish bin. The farmer is lovely, he stopped by each day to make sure everything was OK.

It's the best thing we've done so far on our stay here in the UK. The place was so peaceful, and it's overviewing the beach, which makes it more perfect. At a very affordable nightly cost which for us, pitching and staying in our tent, stargazing at night, storytelling time under the moon and having our bbq time which gave us quality time to our daughter, it was like paying a five Billion-star hotel.

The area and views were beautiful, everyone was nice and it was a very enjoyable stay and we definitely will be returning in the near future. The outside toilet was very clean. We enjoyed our walk down to the beach and cow fields as its in a ideal spot for walks together and with your family where you don't have to pay for parking. We also love the idea of being able to order breakfast to our tent and will be definitely doing this when we next pitch up.

Local attractions

Countryside pursuits first? It’ll take you about 10 minutes to drive to the nearest horse riding centre, and about 20 minutes to get to Plymbridge Woods for a walk in National Trust-owned forest. If you’ve got your sights set on a more involved hike, head to the Dartmoor National Park, whose borders are about 20 minutes away (and it’s a similar drive to Dartmoor Zoo too).

City time is easy to come by too, as it’ll only take about 15 minutes to drive to the centre of Plymouth to visit the National Marine Aquarium, sample the wares of the gin distillery or wander around historic Barbican area. You may also like to take a detour to Saltram (on the edge of the city) for a stroll around the National Trust estate.

And as for the coast, well, there are plenty of ways to enjoy that too: as well as walks on the coast path you can also hit the beach at Wembury, play a round of golf at Staddon Heights (both five minutes’ drive) or explore Thorn House & Garden (10 minutes).

  • National Marine Aquarium (2.3 miles)
  • Dartmoor Zoological Park (6.3 miles)
