  • South Devon working farm with sea views and stabling for horses
  • A 15-minute drive from Plymouth and 20 minutes from Dartmoor
  • Direct access to South West Coast Path; a mile from Bovisand beach
Countryside, coast and city – it’s quite the mix of attractions at Court Gates Wild Camping, a peaceful site at a working farm within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Two of the above are very easily accessible from the site, which looks out over the Dartmoor National Park on one side and the sea on the other. In fact, the coast is close enough to walk to – there’s direct access to the South West Coast Path, and you can follow a footpath that will get you to Bovisand beach in around 20 minutes. Setting off on foot can also get you to the local pub, shops and garage, all of which are about 20 minutes’ walk away (or five minutes in the car). A couple more pubs are within a few minutes’ drive too, although it’s quite possible you’ll be tempted to stick around on the farm to look out to sea, play games and fire up a barbecue (which are allowed as long as you keep them off the ground to avoid burning the grass). And what of the aforementioned city? That’s the coastal settlement of Plymouth, 15 minutes’ drive away and packed with things to see and do (plus places to eat and drink…) Those bringing animals along on holiday can be catered for at Court Gates: well-behaved dogs are welcome, and there’s stabling available at the farm’s livery for horses too. The setup here isn’t in fact entirely wild camping – guests will have access to toilets and running water, but there are no showers.

Local attractions

Countryside pursuits first? It’ll take you about 10 minutes to drive to the nearest horse riding centre, and about 20 minutes to get to Plymbridge Woods for a walk in National Trust-owned forest. If you’ve got your sights set on a more involved hike, head to the Dartmoor National Park, whose borders are about 20 minutes away (and it’s a similar drive to Dartmoor Zoo too). City time is easy to come by too, as it’ll only take about 15 minutes to drive to the centre of Plymouth to visit the National Marine Aquarium, sample the wares of the gin distillery or wander around historic Barbican area. You may also like to take a detour to Saltram (on the edge of the city) for a stroll around the National Trust estate. And as for the coast, well, there are plenty of ways to enjoy that too: as well as walks on the coast path you can also hit the beach at Wembury, play a round of golf at Staddon Heights (both five minutes’ drive) or explore Thorn House & Garden (10 minutes).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site was exactly as described. We were happy with the basic facilities for one night. We were invited to pitch up anywhere we liked.

Disliked: The countryside is not as quiet as it seems, and the road nearby seems to attract bikers late into the night.
As it was the end of the season, the portaloo had become quite full, so we did not use them.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Local handy location with lovely views.
Clean portaloos/plenty of toilet paper.
The refund given.

Disliked: I was told we'd "picked the wrong day to come" and no one was available to help according to the owner - after I'd complained about the antisocial noise coming from the 50+ party who kindly brought along drums, guitars, microphones all plugged into their very own P.A system, in the same "small/quiet/no music allowed" field we pitched in. By 3am I was praying for heavy rain to drown out some of the noise. At 6.40am the music stopped.
Don't bother reading their rules and policies because they're not adhered to.

From the manager: The group concerned came out last year and we had no trouble with them, in fact, a camper on the following evening joined in with them and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We have given a full refund for the night booked and have offered a free night's camping in lieu. Usually our site is very quiet and peaceful, as commented on in the other reviews here

Passable for one night, still the noise level was too much for us.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The view and how commutable it was to the coast.

Disliked: Was not warned about festival levels of music coming from neibouring farm all night long. Ashame this is a reality for working farms because for the price and location it ticked most boxes.

From the manager: Hi, We have given you a complete refund for the one night you spent with us, and offered a free night's camping at a future date. This group of people stayed with us last year and we had no problems, in fact, a camper on the second night enjoyed the music and had a drink and some food with them

The location was perfect for what we wanted.
