Scenic countryside setting

  • Family-run park on a former stud farm and in a wildlife haven
  • Two and a half miles from the coast
  • Heated outdoor pool, bar, café, shop, takeaway and craft centre
Dithering re which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation – walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park. On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy. Nature fans will champ at the bit to delve into the 40 acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others. Meanwhile, beach buoys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch. On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas, walking trails, and nature all around; the park has won awards for its approach to wildlife management and conservation. Also around are letterboxing opps, a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar. Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Easy check-in procedure with good information given.
Good sized pitch with plenty of space. Excellent clean shower block with plenty of hot water.
Really good bar, restaurant food and The Hatch takeaway.
Indoor pool looked good and it has an outdoor pool, all looking well maintained.
Nice polite and helpful staff.
A really good campsite.

I don’t want to praise the site too much, as others would then want to use it. 😊

Disliked The only thing I could criticise would be the 10:00 AM checkout. 11:00 would be nicer.
WiFi was a bit flaky and signal could have been better. But at least we had WiFi!!!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Second time I have stopped at Whitehill and the same level of excellence as on our previous visit. The site cleanliness overall is excellent including the shower and toilet blocks, it is such a tranquil place to stop. They could not be more accommodating, we were originally only taking a camper van and awning for our group of 4 but decided to take our tent on the off chance they had a spare pitch, no problem even managed to locate us together. We shall return.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Friendly, modern, clean and great beer! The staff are friendly and helpful, I also took a look at the gym (if that’s your thing), it’s well equipped for what you would need for a quick session.

Disliked The food was below standard and over priced for what you get. The presentation is definitely not fitting for the holiday parks high standards. It’s a shame this part lets the Whitehall down, maybe the lack of commitment in the kitchen and no guidance before the dishes leave for the restaurant. The plates could of been cleared away more swiftly, ours sat for more than an hour before being g cleared.

Local attractions

The sights and activities around this part of Devon will suit all tastes: Dartmoor for active adventures, Totnes and Dartmouth for history and heritage – and the 22 miles of the English Rivieria for beaches, watersports, fishing and boat trips. The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is Goodrington, a mile south of Paignton. After you’ve stretched out on the red sands, there are a few other options to check out: learn about the history of the English Riviera at the free Seashore Centre, pedal your way around the boating lake, or take the kids to the waterslides and pools of Splashdown at Quaywest. The English Riviera is of course also Agatha Christie territory – Greenway House was her holiday home (also where David Suchet as Poirot filmed his last scenes. Sniff.) If you can’t make it to the annual Agatha Christie festival (tsk), amble along the 10 landmarks of the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay; eight of the sites have clues spelling out the name of a Christie character. Hint: it’s probably not ‘Miss Marple’.
