  • Semi-wild camping by a scenic Devon cider orchard
  • Sidmouth 15 minutes' drive; half an hour from central Exeter
  • Hampers available; small farm shop for teas, coffees and snacks
Settle into your own space, get away from your daily routine and appreciate the serenity of east Devon at Bowhayes Farm Camping, a semi-wild campsite in the scenic grounds of a Devon cider orchard. The site is located on the edge of the leafy hamlet of Venn Ottery in extensive farmland, surrounded by footpaths and a tree nursery. How you spend your time here is up to you – you might like to wander through Venn Ottery, amble on Aylesbeare Common, a nearby RSPB reserve, or head down to the Jurassic Coast at Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton (roughly a quarter of an hour's drive away). Whatever you get up to, aim to get back to the farm in time for sunset, as the sky often puts on a beguiling show just before dusk. This is also when the local wildlife comes out to say hello – you might spot roe deer, badgers, rabbits, foxes, pheasants and more. When there's little cloud coverage, this is generally followed by a spectacular starry sky, as this secluded pocket of Devon has very low levels of light pollution. Facilities at Bowhayes Farm Camping are fairly simple and include a farm toilet, shower and fresh drinking water. There is also a small farm shop where you can head for teas, coffees, cold drinks, snacks and essentials. Special hampers can be made up to order too, provided you give the site enough advance notice. Please note that the adult and family pitching areas are separated from each other by roughly 150 metres to maximise peace and relaxation between groups.

Liked: We loved our stay at Bowhayes Farm! The location is so peaceful and it is great to be able to stay within the trees of the apple orchard. Howard and Fiona are such welcoming and friendly hosts, who gave us loads of great recommendations for the local areas' pubs and walks. We will definitely be returning and have already recommended to all our friends and family. Poppy & Dan

Liked: A fantadtic and quiet site, we had such a relaxing time with lots of space and picturesque views. The utilities were great, especially the shower. All staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, even making a fuss over our dogs. We will definitely be staying again. An ideal spot if you want to unwind and get away from the world for a while.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (small)

Liked: Loved the large amount of space between pitches and that it's such a small camp site. The owners are really nice and friendly, driving us to and fro our camping spot with our camping our gear in his 4x4 which was a lovely unexpected bonus. It's a lovely quiet place surrounded by greenery, a lovely place to get out into nature. we very much enjoyed our time here and the town was only a relatively short walk away which was equally as delightful. Though we camped this time, the bell tents looked like such cosy places to spend sleep as well and we're definitely thinking about booking one of them next time we pop down to devon!

From the manager: Hi Sophie, Many thanks for your lovely review - we're really please that you liked our little corner of East Devon. If you book one of the bell tents we should (fingers crossed) have the horsebox shower and toilet up and running and... our new 'field kitchen'!! Watch this space....! It was a pleasure hosing you both, we hope to see you again! Howard & Fiona

Michelin bell tent

Liked: Tent was beautiful . Surroundings were beautiful. Hosts were lovely

Disliked: Didn't like needing to walk up from the car park to the tent.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Natalie, Thank you for your nice review - very kind. Very pleased you liked our orchard bell tent, albeit a little walk (c. 200m) from the parking area. I'm sure you'll understand why we have to keep cars away from the orchard - so as to ensure it's kept as peaceful as possible. Hence why I tend to transfer all the guests to and from the orchard with their luggage. That said it's good to get honest feedback and (you may be pleased to hear) we're addressing that very point!!! We have new facilities to be installed at the top of the orchard - to enhance the experience, and cut down the walking... watch this space! I hope to see you again next year! Regards, Howard and Fiona
