Bowhayes Farm Camping: Relax in our bell tents surrounded by beautiful cider orchards

General

  • Semi-wild camping by a scenic Devon cider orchard
  • Sidmouth 15 minutes' drive; half an hour from central Exeter
  • Hampers available; small farm shop for teas, coffees and snacks

Settle into your own space, get away from your daily routine and appreciate the serenity of east Devon at Bowhayes Farm Camping, a semi-wild campsite in the scenic grounds of a Devon cider orchard.

The site is located on the edge of the leafy hamlet of Venn Ottery in extensive farmland, surrounded by footpaths and a tree nursery. How you spend your time here is up to you – you might like to wander through Venn Ottery, amble on Aylesbeare Common, a nearby RSPB reserve, or head down to the Jurassic Coast at Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton (roughly a quarter of an hour's drive away).

Whatever you get up to, aim to get back to the farm in time for sunset, as the sky often puts on a beguiling show just before dusk. This is also when the local wildlife comes out to say hello – you might spot roe deer, badgers, rabbits, foxes, pheasants and more. When there's little cloud coverage, this is generally followed by a spectacular starry sky, as this secluded pocket of Devon has very low levels of light pollution.

Facilities at Bowhayes Farm Camping are fairly simple and include a farm toilet, shower and fresh drinking water. There is also a small farm shop where you can head for teas, coffees, cold drinks, snacks and essentials. Special hampers can be made up to order too, provided you give the site enough advance notice.

Please note that the adult and family pitching areas are separated from each other by roughly 150 metres to maximise peace and relaxation between groups.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Reception is unmanned after 4:30 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Guests under the age of 13 are not allowed on site.

Please note that the shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

From the manager...

Hi Natalie,

Thank you for your nice review - very kind. Very pleased you liked our orchard bell tent, albeit a little walk (c. 200m) from the parking area. I'm sure you'll understand why we have to keep cars away from the orchard - so as to ensure it's kept as peaceful as possible. Hence why I tend to transfer all the guests to and from the orchard with their luggage. That said it's good to get honest feedback and (you may be pleased to hear) we're addressing that very point!!!

We have new facilities to be installed at the top of the orchard - to enhance the experience, and cut down the walking... watch this space!

I hope to see you again next year!

Regards,

Howard and Fiona

We stayed at 10 campsites this summer and this went straight into our top 3 ! The orchard itself is lovely, huge pitches - we felt like we were literally the only ones there ! Toilets and shower are great, and the little shop is absolutely perfect. Most of all Howard and Fiona are so welcoming, helpful and kind it was a joy to stay at this campsite ! Great location too - could not recommend more.

We were fortunate enough to stay at the Bowhayes Farm campsite for one night whilst bikepacking the East Devon Trail. The campsite is very close to the East Devo Trail and well suited for bikepacking excursions. We were happy enough to lock our bikes to a tree in the orchard next to our tent, although the option to lock them in a secure barn was also availble. Camping spots are distributed amoungst a working apple orchard so that you never hear or see any of the other campers, giving it a very peaceful setting. The campsite has a single hot shower and toilet that are both very clean and accesible. There is also a campsite shop which you can buy a decent coffee from in the morning before you leave. The hosts, Fiona and Howard, were very friendly and welcoming and were able to accommodate our rather unplanned arrival schedule. We sat and chat with them for a long time whilst there and learnt a lot about the apple and cider trade. I would highly recommend this campsite and we hope to use it again in the future.

Thanks so much Andrew. It was great chatting with you both and hearing about the cycle trail you guys had been on. I hope the coffee you took home has been enjoyed! See you again next time you're down this way. All the best, Fiona.

Beautiful countryside farm. One of the main selling points this is not really a camping site with marked out areas where you get put in like a grazing animal. This is a farming families home and land where you end up feeling like a friend rather than a guest. Orchard provides a lovely shade which helps to not overheat in the morning. Evenings are beatiful with birds around and you can hear owls around.
All in all a brilliant place to stay if you prefer a slightly more secluded and not a bunched up camping this is the place to go!

Howard is a fantastic host, giving everything you need for your stay and more. Beautiful orchard, loved the quiteness and secluded nature of the pitches, and the tractor ride up to the pitch was an unexpected bonus. The outback shower fits the picture perfectly.

    Disliked:

Can't really complain about anything, but if I had to I'd say a single toilet for the site did make for a few queues.

From the manager...

Hi Mike,

Thank you both for your review, it's always nice to hear from our guests. I'm please you both enjoyed yourselves - the noise on you last night was a female fox by the way!

Thanks for the feedback for the toilet... the new facility build has commenced as promised! An outback combi loo and shower... watch this space!!

If you're passing this way again please drop in... and I'll take you for another tractor ride!

Regards,

Howard
