General

  • Friendly site on scenic working farmland
  • In a County Wildlife Site a short distance from Dartmoor
  • Excellent customer service and immaculate amenities

Photographers and wildlife watchers, get down with haste to Westdown Farm Camping near Dartmoor. Set over 92 acres of working farmland, this is a deeply rural County Wildlife Site, where the hedgerows and fields are left to lie natural with minimal interference from the farm owners so that wildlife can flourish.

Snappers and nature spotters have over 30 species of butterflies to spy from these farmlands, among fields rich in wild flowers and grasses, and in a scenic setting about 500 feet above sea level: Dartmoor is viewable from one side of the farm and Exmoor on a clear day from the other.

The farm is also home to a pedigree herd of British Longhorn cattle who graze the land and help maintain the diversity of the wildlife. (Dogs are welcome on site, but must stay on leads for the safety of the livestock.)

All is run by Stacey and her team, who pride themselves on tiptop customer service with cleanly-kept amenities and access to woodland and farmland strolls. Maps of the farmland are given out on arrival and guests are welcome to wander and explore as well as meet the animals.

Two immaculately-maintained composting toilets are on the edge of the camping field, both equipped with toilet roll, running water for hand washing and a hand towel.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Please note the farm yard gate is locked between 10pm and 8am and vehicles are not allowed during this hours. Customers have 24/7 pedestrian access through a gate at the bottom of the camping field, and cars still have access to the main road.

This is a working farm and the reception is unmanned, for assistance please call the number provided with the booking confirmation.

What is there not to like, apart from the weather :-)
The Hosts were absolutely faultless, nothing was too much trouble and were welcoming and always had time to talk to you.

I was made aware of the facilities and what was and more importantly what was NOT available, no hidden surprises.

I would highly recommend this eco friendly venue, and local stores not too far away.
Don't forget to ask for home grown produce.....

    Disliked:

Weather but hey not in the control of the owners, but made every effort to make the stay as comfortable as possible.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and your lovely kind words. It was a pleasure to meet you. We look forward to your return.

Very good value and memorable holiday! The owners are such lovely people and make you feel so welcome can't wait to go back next year! Make sure you don't forget your wellies ;)

We had an amazing time at Westdown Farm, we stayed in the teepee and I have to say i am not a good camper so was very nervous, espescially about the composting loos. However everything was amazing, the teepee was beautiful, the scenery was amazing, Stacey made us feel very welcome (to the extent that the night it rained lots she gave us a call to check we were all ok) everything we needed was there and all immaculate and the composting loos were extremely clean and well kept and did not smell at all! We can't wait to go back

    Disliked:

The only down side (for me the not very good camper) was that there was no mirror anywhere to do my hair ! (sorry thats a really girly dislike!)

Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff and level pitches 08/08/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Laura T. Confirmed

  • Non-electric mixed touring pitch

  • Liked:

Lovely new compost toilet and shower block, kept scrupulously clean. Beautiful countryside on every side, with plenty of room for tons of campers without them bumping shoulders. Fairly easy to find, and close enough to nearest town (Okehampton) to make quick reccies out for supplies.

    Disliked:

It's not a dislike, but I imagine I would have liked to know that the campervan field was not 'wild camping' in the way that the rest of the site is. The field is a flat open area, with a large patch of hard-standing, so not 'wild' in the way that the areas for tent camping are. Although we are quiet and undisturbed, I was imagining that the various camping pitches would have some privacy in the form of hedges or trees around them.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We offer different pitch types to try and accommodate everyone as much as we can. As we only opened last year we haven't prepared an 'all weather' wild camping area for motor homes/camper-vans. So if we have had a lot of rain, like we have had over the last few weeks, we cannot allow vans to travel over fields for their perfect secluded spot as they will get stuck. But we will be concentrating on this new facility over the winter for next year. Kind regards, Stacey and the Westdown team.

    Very friendly and welcoming owner.
Good base for exploring north Dartmoor and visiting Okehampton.
Plenty of hot water for washing up/washing.

    Disliked:

Camping/touring field is very compact, and with more than 4 pitches would feel crowded.
Significant road noise from adjacent A386, which is pretty much continuous all through the day until late evening.

Everything has been thought of a proper mattress on a stunning pallet bed and 2 blow up beds for the kids along with duvets kept us comfy and warm all night. Stacy and her family were very welcoming and made us feel as though nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely be re-booking and recommending to friends and family.

Local attractions

As it's Dartmoor – and Devon – many activities and attractions for all weathers are easy to get to from here, like the Tarka Trail, accessible from the Meeth Quarry Nature Reserve , and the reserve itself, a former clay quarry with two huge lakes, grassland and woodland areas, and bike trails and walking paths.

Dartmoor is a must: visit the High Moorland visitor centre in Princetown to hear the Dartmoor story and get inspired by the Dartmoor Timelapse film, find out more about Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles, or, for kids, dressing up, letting imaginations run riot in the junior Ranger Land Rover or watching the Hairy Hands film in the cinema.

Other nearby attractions include the Milky Way theme park, Castle Drogo, Lydford Gorge, Roadford Lake, Parklands indoor pool and Chagford outdoor pool, Exeter Cathedral, Tavistock, Simmons Park, the museum of Dartmoor Life and Okehampton: you'll most certainly not be bored around here…

The Westdown Farm Camping team also highly recommends a trot along to the Miniature Pony Centre near Newton Abbot, where kids can visit the paddock to be surrounded by miniature ponies and tiny foals.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (11.1 miles)
  • Castle Drogo (12.0 miles)
