Working farm site close to Dartmoor

General

  • Friendly site on scenic working farmland
  • In a County Wildlife Site a short distance from Dartmoor
  • Excellent customer service and easy access to walks: maps given out

Photographers and wildlife watchers, get down with haste to Westdown Farm Camping near Dartmoor. Set over 92 acres of working farmland, this is a deeply rural County Wildlife Site, where the hedgerows and fields are left to lie natural with minimal interference from the farm owners so that wildlife can flourish.

Snappers and nature spotters have over 30 species of butterflies to spy from these farmlands, among fields rich in wild flowers and grasses, and in a scenic setting about 500 feet above sea level: Dartmoor is viewable from one side of the farm and Exmoor on a clear day from the other.

The farm is also home to a pedigree herd of British Longhorn cattle who graze the land and help maintain the diversity of the wildlife. (Dogs are welcome on site, but must stay on leads for the safety of the livestock.) And if you're a cyclist? Wheel your weary self in here too, as the farm is a handy halfway point on National Route 27, running coast to coast on a signed path from Ilfracombe to Plymouth.

All is run by Stacey and her team, who pride themselves on tiptop customer service with cleanly-kept amenities and access to woodland and farmland strolls. Maps of the farmland are given out on arrival and guests are welcome to wander and explore as well as meet the animals.

Two immaculately-maintained composting toilets are on the edge of the camping field, both equipped with toilet roll, running water for hand washing and a hand towel.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Please note the farm yard gate is locked between 10pm and 8am and vehicles are not allowed during this hours. Customers have 24/7 pedestrian access through a gate at the bottom of the camping field, and cars still have access to the main road.

This is a working farm and the reception is unmanned; for assistance please call the number provided with the booking confirmation.

Everything!!! The wild camping setting is gorgeous. Your own little part of the woods to really get away from day to day life! Stacey and the team are just lovely, really helpful and friendly. The wood bags they made up were great, even with paper and kindling, not just shop bought bags! Their fire pits to hire are fab too and a really good price. Such a gorgeous site with lovely views. Will 100% visit here again! We loved it!!!

    Disliked:

The compost loos on the fields were fab, but the ones in the shower block were a bit smelly. But love that they are composting loos, fab idea!

    Disliked:

Owner let people turn up at 12-1am in the morning we were placed right by where everyone comes in so first night was ruined by someone checking it at 1am and shining there car lights on to our tent, there’s a fishing lake but it’s extra (doesn’t mention this in description) kids aren’t allow to fish either this wasn’t mentioned in description my little boy was so upset. Other people on the camp site have no cleaning skills left toilets and shower in the most vile states, nothing really for the children to do. Dogs braking all hours of the night and day, Meant to have stayed for three nights left after two pitches were not level

I spent a happy couple of days on this site, and found the owners to be very friendly and helpful. The facilities are basic, but clean, and in keeping with the site's eco ethos, which I liked. Even though I was staying over the bank holiday weekend, it wasn't noisy or crowded. Very reasonably priced site :)

    Disliked:

More an observation than a criticism. The site is just off an A-road, and although it wasn't particularly noisy or intrusive, it did mean I couldn't find walks to do directly from the site. There are loads of walking routes around, but you seem to have to drive to get onto any footpaths, which for me was a bit of a disappointment. But that's not the site's fault at all!

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and glad you enjoyed your stay.
Unfortunately we aren't directly next to any walking routes but we do have 92 acres for campers to wander round in. But if you do want that longer walk, there are a few lovely places that do require a small drive in your vehicle.
Best wishes, Stacey & the Westdown team

Basic facilities in the shower block with composting toilets. Stacey the owner/manager is lovely and nothing is too much trouble.

We are so glad you got to see some of the real Westdown Farm. Not many of the campers get to see so much of the wildlife that comes to visit us as you did.

Lovely friendly reception from the owner who came down to welcome us and give information about the site and a circular walk that went around the farm. We camped next to a field of buttercups and watched small birds feeding from the grass seeds. Idyllic. The showers were hot and facilities were clean and tidy.

Local attractions

As it's Dartmoor – and Devon – many activities and attractions for all weathers are easy to get to from here, like the Tarka Trail, accessible from the Meeth Quarry Nature Reserve , and the reserve itself, a former clay quarry with two huge lakes, grassland and woodland areas, and bike trails and walking paths.

Dartmoor is a must: visit the High Moorland visitor centre in Princetown to hear the Dartmoor story and get inspired by the Dartmoor Timelapse film, find out more about Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles, or, for kids, dressing up, letting imaginations run riot in the junior Ranger Land Rover or watching the Hairy Hands film in the cinema.

Other nearby attractions include the Milky Way theme park, Castle Drogo, Lydford Gorge, Roadford Lake, Parklands indoor pool and Chagford outdoor pool, Exeter Cathedral, Tavistock, Simmons Park, the museum of Dartmoor Life and Okehampton: you'll most certainly not be bored around here…

The Westdown Farm Camping team also highly recommends a trot along to the Miniature Pony Centre near Newton Abbot, where kids can visit the paddock to be surrounded by miniature ponies and tiny foals.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (17.9 kilometres)
  • Castle Drogo (19.4 kilometres)

  • Finch Foundry (10.7 kilometres)
