Naturally Glamping: Zippy

General

  • Bell tents at a quiet Devon site 15 minutes' drive from Newton Abbot
  • A 20-minute drive to Dawlish beach, Exeter and Dartmoor
  • Double bed and firepit/barbecue provided

A secluded slice of Devon countryside no doubt sounds pretty good on its own – but it gets better when you learn that Naturally Glamping is easily accessed from the A380, thus saving you from any worries about finding your way down little country lanes.

This lovely location is part of a peaceful rural Devon working farm about 15 minutes’ drive from Newton Abbot, and it’s a place that’s all about relaxed stays – think lake views, woodland walks and a stream running down to a lake that connects to the river below. Unsurprisingly, it’s a bit of a wildlife haven too, and you may well spot glow worms and bats at night thanks to the lack of lighting around this off-grid place (although there is minimal solar electricity for when you need it).

The surroundings may be pleasingly wild here but the accommodation certainly isn’t – in fact, the bell tents are rather smart, with a double bed made up ready for your arrival and all sorts of extra bits including bunting, fairy lights, rugs and a lantern to create a cosy atmosphere. Outdoor furniture is supplied too, along with a firepit/barbecue (just the place to settle down for an evening tending the grill while you admire the views…)

There’s plenty of space here too, as the tents are set well apart in a 2.5-acre meadow. For facilities, it’s a short walk to the toilet/shower block. Elsewhere around the site you can wander off to meet the horses and alpacas or head over the stepping stones to access several miles of forest trail (heading all the way to the local pub if you wish).

Please note

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Minimum spacing of 10 metres between pitches.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 3 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Please be careful around the small lake and stream on site

For 4x4 owners and braver drivers, there’s parking very close to pitches. For the rest, access from the main car park involves a 200-metre walk down a steep track, which can be slippery at times (wheelbarrows are provided for your gear.) Not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

Only stay if you have a 4x4! The hill is too steep19/09/2022

The hill! Only 4x4’s can get up and down the hill, using a wheel barrow to travel 3 times up and down 200 meters of what felt like Mount Everest was super hard work. On the plus side I’ve come home with a huge workout on my thighs and bum! The showers and the dish wash station being in the same room and the lights in the toilets, even during the day it was too dark.

Peace and quiet, the resident ducks, the fairy lights.. (although some have more than others) toilet (x2) and shower unit x 1 which did the job but I would hate to have to use them if the site was fully booked. Could ideally provide more facilities. The other bits provided in the tent, tea/coffee/mugs water bottles and LED torch and cool box, water bottles and instructions etc were all very useful.

    Disliked:

We stayed in Zippy, as the photos on the website showed it looking over a beautiful lake. However, when we arrived we couldn’t actually see the lake as it was covered by trees, shrubs etc. This was a little disappointing although could hear the water which was nice. Also, in said website photos the field looked quite well maintained, short grass and tidy looking, but again on arrival it was very over grown and abit scruffy looking. I understand the term used is Naturally Glamping- but it did make it feel and look very unkept. There was a hanging bag of water in the damp bag on the centre pillar which should have been replaced as it was useless it being there. Also there were 3 old hangers, on the central
Pilllar, which I think may have been left by previous guests. There was grass on the carpet inside the tent too when we arrived so hadn’t been swept out. Abit disappointing for the first impression. I know that the warning of the road down is provided on the email you receive two days prior to arriving. BUT this really should be provided as a general note at the time of booking as it REALLY is very bad and exceedingly hard to drive up and out of the site. We parked in carpark 2 and it still took us three attempts (at speed) to get up and over the numerous ridges and holes and divots to get off site as the gravel/stones are so loose. We had a Fiat Doblo so quite high in base and sturdy and we were very shocked at the struggle we had. All you could hear were people (in their 4x4 cars wheel-spinning as they tackled the driveway too head off.
We never saw any member of staff whist we stayed from Sat- Mon and no response from emails prior to arriving.

From the manager...

Were really sorry that there were elements of your trip you disliked. Regarding the track, there is a section on the Pitch Up website where we can add 'please note' and it does mention the track. We have had 3 summers of guests and the majority like the sense of adventure and the location, nature, peace and views are what you get in reward.
The coat hangers are left in the tent as guests like to use them to hang their things or wet coats from the awning. Sorry your dehumidifier was full, there was a lot of rain and moisture last week, so must have filled quicker than usual and the cleaner missed it.
We were extremely short staffed last week and then had an emergency with our site manager so he was not around.
Glad you like the nature and peace though and hope you enjoyed overall

Loved the bell tent and it had all that we needed for a perfect little break for our family. Will definitely come again when we get the chance.
Walked to the little village of Ideford one evening, and had dinner in the local pub there, everyone was exceptionally friendly and the food was excellent.

Nice site - felt a bit unloved.12/06/2022

The bell tent was lovely and well equipped.
The site itself is on a sloping hill going down to a river and there are lovely walks through the forest on the other side of the river.
The location of the site is fantastic with local ammenities near by and lots to do in bad weather as well as good.

    Disliked:

The site just felt a bit unloved. Even though I knew it was self-check in, it would have been nice if someone had come round at any stage during the stay to see if people were ok. For example, only one of the futons in our tent was made up and the other was really difficult to figure out. We did it eventually but it would have been nice to see someone who was interested in our stay earlier on and could have helped.

Also the toilets and showers were not cleaned at all in the entire time we were there - two nights. Finally, the soap had run out in the toilet when we arrived - I bought a new one when we were out - but the old one was never removed or replaced.

From the manager...

Hello.
Really pleased you loved the location and had a nice time in the area.
Unfortunately that weekend we had some staffing issues, so there was nobody on site for those 2 days. We normally have a site manager who lives on site and is around for help.
Most people love the feel of being left to themselves but knowing we are just a phone call/text away (as mentioned in the arrival info) if they should need anything.
We leave the futons in sofa mode so the tents is more spacious and people can relax. I will be sure to put some instructions in the tent though if it is a bit fiddly.
Thanks for the feedback

Lovely grounds, peaceful with the lake and not too many tents. Shower and toilet facilities were very good. Lanterns were a nice touch too.

The hill is very steep but I got my VW T5 up and down a few times driving sensibly and not stopping half way.

    Disliked:

Not really any dislikes but the grass was very overgrown around the lake and middle of the field. I think this may be due to the time of year ad everything is very green at the moment!
